Re: Embracer CEO Says PC, Console Segment the 'Bad Guy', Video Games a 'Volatile' Business

Art in general is volatile investment. The only investors that should bother with video games are ones that are ok with short term loss and high risk.

It can take decades to build up a brand, get an experienced team, and ROI.

This is why Nintendo is mostly consistent, they plan long term; and accept that failure is part of the industry.

Art is subjective. You cannot predict popularity.

Though an investor who is in it for love, can at least ensure a game is fun.

And maybe have restraint on spending for unnecessary things.

It's because artists are cheaper than developers. A game like CoD probably uses giant textures that need to be uncompressed and memory mapped to get loaded in.

Look at DOOM Eternal, because id has always made that game to run on many specs of hardware they put more thought into how textures are loaded, its 50GB in size.

It can cost more $$$ for a realistic looking game to use small repeatable textures (3D tiles essentially). This also has a different style pipeline.

Studios would rather pay Nvidia and Epic to come up with a one-size-fits-all solution with AI and artist-focused tooling. And not-for-nothing but.... hard drives are cheaper than RAM, GPU or CPU usually, which is also why Microsoft and Sony have spent $$$ optimizing asset delivery from hard drives.

@turniplord The skills required to have BC are usually different than game development. So it wouldn’t be a case of them pulling developers from a new game per se.

Most games on PS4 are written in C++ usually using an engine like unreal or unity; given it used PC architecture, so long as the PS5 also uses PC architecture, Sony would just need to maintain the PS4 system calls and the runtime, which isn’t too hard, Microsoft has done that for years (hence why you can run old windows games on modern windows).

I also think all games if possible should be available on a modern platform; old hardware doesn’t last forever. Books and movies are reprinted all the time, games should be as well.
