Yeah actually does look like that Y2K era of Japanese games where some crazy concept and obtuse control layouts were baked in vibrant cell-shading. Anybody remember Go Go Hypergrind?
Haven't played yet but the only thing that made me pause watching the announcement vid was the melee combat itself lol. I know the devs showed comparisons and said they tried updating the hit response, and maybe it feels better playing it controller vibration but honestly the distance between the graphical fidelity and the animation is funny and kind of...uncanny in a sense?
Add another one in the "this game is way overrated" category! I know it's not necessary to say that, I just want it to be clear that there's people out there without an anti-ubisoft hateboner that don't like the game too. Personally preferred greatly AC Shadows and Rise of the Ronin myself.
@Deljo be that as it may I agree with him on this entry, should be something like Riven VR where it makes "walking around the environment" more engaging and you can really focus on the visuals, only this doesn't look nearly as good as Riven based on the screens here and the ones I saw on Steam
Gamers when everybody gives a game the same score: "What happened to REAL journalism? Tired of this paid-off woke world where people are afraid to give actual opinions."
Gamers when one website reviews a game somewhat lower than others: "What the HELL is this? Okay guys if you want a REAL, UNBAISED review I recommend looking at ANY other gaming site cuz these guys clearly don't know what they're talking about. Ever heard of READING THE ROOM?!?!"
If somebody were to take (online, social media poisoned)fighting game fans at their word, the only actually good fighting games came out pre-2010's and every single one out now just sucks hard, unbalanced, not enough content, hates online players, bad game not worth spending money on. Anybody else notice this?
I know it's barely related to the point of the article but this quote: "Civ VII is probably our favourite entry in the storied series" holy crap that's a moment to let you know how massive the gulf is sometimes in what player vs reviewer likes and wants from video games. Like the kind of stuff that informs what sources you'd look at to decide to buy a game or not. Glad I read this.
Would have loved for the actual story progression from 4 to make a return, not only from liking it personally but also seeing as that was the most major thing about that release to differentiate it from the previous ones...but whatever, a $50 level pack for 1+2 made by a different dev with worse reputation is still tempting somehow, such is the power of arcade skating games!
Dunno if this has been addressed but what many think of as a "AA" game in say the 2000's still cost millions of dollars to make. Very different from an indie studio with a few people at most.
I know it's way too late now, but anybody else think it would've made much more sense to have 1/2/3 be its own game and separate 4 into its own or at least stand-alone dlc? It's one of my favorites but considering the removal of the time limit and the massive changes to how you progress in the game, just seems a bit weird to pair it with one of the earlier entries.
Like a few others have said the market didn't f****** disappear dude, what actually happened was executives and shareholders deciding to only follow Ubisoft style "AAA" games (remember Ubi were the ones to popularize that term to begin with) and the corresponding budget inflation that causes, leading to more and more resources(as game development in general rose in costs) being put into those AAA games instead of any other internal studio. Seconding the Nintendo points as well, they have very very tightly controlled budgets specifically so games with less mainstream potential DON'T need to sell millions and millions to make a return. Smart business decisions leading to a happy, even arguably cult-like fanbase. Who would've thought?
Minor point, but "synthy scores" would be more accurately associated with the 80's, right? Haven't played myself but seems like an interesting decision for a game so focused on music and a specific time period.
