@Cornpop76 thank you for sharing your experiences and for offering recommendations. I understand those concerns as they are ones I have with my physical optical discs and continue to do so. I won’t however back any option a company has made/forced that limits consumer choice and long-term freedoms to make those choices. Additionally, in my country there have been no marketing materials or labelling with regards to the 85mb stub requiring additional downloading which can be categorised as misleading
@Kierant202 It does, but you do you champ. Maybe some addition reading on the history of anti-consumer practices in the pursuit of growth might help you going forward. Having dialogue, discussion and creating awareness is not responding to clickbait where the original comments on another article were transferred over into this article and the conversation continued.
@Kierant202 That’s futile rhetoric. The more people speak to each other, the more it spreads. The more it spreads, the wider the reach. The wider the reach, the bigger the voice. Your actions and words do more than you expect, and having such a laissez faire response is more harmful than good. Just look at any articles for bystander syndrome and reflect
@nomither6 The bigger view is how acceptance or resigning to actions that are increasingly funnelling away consumer choice is empowering large companies to make future choices where people will forced to cough up either more freedom of choice and/or money. I am a huge Doom franchise fan and even have one of my doom artworks in the house of John Romero, but this is a title I won’t buy because I can’t ethically support these practices. Honestly, I hope those that do buy it on PS enjoy it, but I can only hope that more people widen their view and understanding on how every little decision like this has far-reaching outcomes
@nomither6 No, a business has introduced a limitation on how the content can be accessed. Just by saying there’s a disc doesn’t gloss over the fact that a choice was removed and they added a different option and limited ownership.
A lot of physical vs digital discussions forget about Choice. As consumers, a choice was taken away by a business, and in a way that is not advertised prominently.
Those that say “whatever, internet exists” are being narrow minded and thinking of themselves.
Those saying “MS suxorz” etc., are either frustrated or baiting.
From a broader mindset, nothing good happens when big businesses gain more control and implement limitations about how and what you can purchase
@LogicStrikesAgain I completely agree. I may not like NS2 game-key carts or NS1 code-in-a-box but at least they are completely transparent on the front of the box for consumers to make educated purchasing decisions
@Cornpop76 I can still play my NES carts and have enough nouse on how to maintain/repair. Would you be able to say the same about a digital library on a console self-contained ecosystem in 30-40 years?
@MrPeanutbutterz Not short term lol. Might re-release in another generation or 2 with a New SKU and “whoops, that old version is no longer downloadable, and neither is that digital storefront on that old console, we can charge you an upgrade fee for the new sku” lewl
@BAMozzy Think of the wider viewpoint of ownership vs leasing. Over 95% of releases are still installable and playable without any internet connectivity required and not beholden to executives making decisions about server overheads. I’m happy paying $70 for a pair of jeans but wouldn’t be happy paying $70 only to find out that (a) it was a loan for as long as the shop ordained, and (b) they could be taken at any time.
@Vectrex But you’ll be part of the large percentage that eventually cry foul when you won’t be able to access the games if/when the license is revoked. You may feel fine paying your hard-earned money to effectively loan a game for an indeterminate time but others aren’t.
Banishers Ghosts Of New Eden was fantastic. Really loved the story and atmosphere. Combat was a tad repetitive but completely made up for by the overall game, and one of the few titles I’ve revisited more than once.
Bounced off the first so many times before I made a commitment to finish it and was absolutely engrossed once I gave myself the time to play a courier rather than everything else gaming had taught me. Bring on the sequel
Had written off until this news. Now I’m interested. Would rather a tightly constructed and enjoyable game than something filled with checklists and collectibles.
@UltimateOtaku91 If I could put my copy of PS1 Bloody Roar in my PS5 I’d be extremely satisfied. Would be nice not to drag out the PS2 every time I wanted to play a few rounds.
@themightyant Thanks for sharing the full URL. I have faith in enthusiasts, however my concern is that the big 3 start cracking down on that avenue. Love the profile icon! All consoles are great and have amazing offering from a myriad of developers big and small.
@Cres_Waven1 This is the thinking that businesses want people to believe. Look at https://www.doesitplay.org/ for more information. From a Big Business stand point, when you’re “the last house (on the) left” and limited competition, what better way to increase profits (a fiduciary responsibility) than control delivery, playability, and pricing.
@Northern_munkey Doesitplay.org is a great reference for what can play from Discs/Carts offline sans updating.
I have almost every physical release from this franchise (including LR versions) but will skip if it is a requirement do download to play. Maybe it’s growing up when games were playable on release offline and knowing I could bring out any of my old consoles and games and still run them, but I won’t pay full price for a title I may not be able to access should servers shut down at a business’s whim

But at least you can delete and reinstall when you want to. Discs/Carts so far are outliving digital storefronts.

Re: DOOM: The Dark Ages (PS5) - Medieval Mashup Slows Down for FPS Excellence
Great review but shame that MS/Bethesda couldn’t fit an 80gb game on a 100gb Disc.
Thankfully doesitplay.org saved me from buying a game-key disc.

Why no love for the DS Edge (except for the handle peeling issue)
