@SMJ PS2 was the cheapest most accessible DVD player on the market at the time. A huge install base also usually means more casual play too.(ie Nintendo Wii)
It's not the same situation either as so much of games was magazines, word of mouth, good box art and online gaming was in its absolute infancy with only really SOCOM. I didn't know anyone who had their PS2 online.
