We're yet to really hear anything concrete about Cyberpunk 2 — as it's now officially referred to — but one thing we do know is that it's being shaped by some of CD Projket Red's top talent.

And key among them is Gabe Amatangelo, who spearheaded Cyberpunk 2077's Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty expansion, effectively completing the game's turnaround after its disastrous launch back in 2020.

Amatangelo is actually the director on Cyberpunk 2 — a position that seems well earned given how he and his team handled 2077's rebirth.

Interestingly, CDPR's got Amatangelo to sit down and talk about his inspirations — and eventual goals — in an interview on the developer's website. It's a good read, and my main takeaway is that the sequel should be in very safe hands.

Not just because of his work on 2077, but because Amatangelo comes across really well.

He's been working on Cyberpunk 2 right from the start, and although he doesn't give much away, he does speak about the project in broader terms.

"I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people," he says.

"And it evolves as I empower the team and individuals within them to contribute. It becomes something else, right? It becomes this thing that I've shepherded, but it's ultimately a reflection of the team's hearts and souls. And I look forward to sharing that.”

Amatangelo continues: "Video games impacted my life. They opened my mind, and got me motivated and excited. And I want to make sure that doesn't go away for this generation or the next."

And speaking about his time at CDPR, he explains: "I wanted to work somewhere that treated massive, open-world, immersive, narrative-driven games as art. There will always be entertainment in this medium, but we need to make sure it has art as well."

It'll still be quite some time — several years, most likely — until we actually get to see Cyberpunk 2 in action, but again, the promise of something special is already there. Before then, The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release.
