PlayStation has confirmed its decision to "step away" from the development of Physint, the new Metal Gear Solid-esque project from Kojima Productions that was announced a few years ago.
In a statement posted to social media, Sony explained: "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game."
The project is still in development, though, under a new publisher: Xbox.
Hideo Kojima took to social media to explain that rather than just stepping away from Physint, Sony had cancelled the project entirely in mid-June. In the three months since then, the developer has been searching for a new partner and found it in Xbox Game Studios.
"In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again," explained Kojima. "Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward."
The reason why Sony decided to step away from Physint and cancel development hasn't been shared.
Instead, the company simply added: "Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future."
Kojima Productions is also collaborating with Xbox Game Studios on OD, a more experimental horror game that's been knocking about for a few years now.
While Sony took a softer approach by saying it chose to "step away" from Physint, Kojima shared the actual reality of the situation: "As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project." This led to the team searching for a new publishing partner.
Following the switch, the final product will likely look dramatically different than if it had reached the finish line with Sony. The original reveal suggested Physint would make use of Sony Pictures' film production buildings, and that PlayStation would provide its full backing.
We've never seen the game in action, but Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Don Lee (Train to Busan) and Minami Hamabe (Godzilla Minus One) were confirmed as cast members, and considerable work was being put into face models via 3Lateral technology.
Now, none of this work will come to fruition under PlayStation. Whether the game even launches on PlayStation (most likely PS6) is theoretically up in the air now, following Xbox's recent attempt to reclaim exclusive games.
The official Kojima Productions account had a follow-up post sharing its excitement to work with Xbox beyond just OD: "XBOX understands and shares our bold creative vision, and this expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world."
With fan sentiment surrounding PlayStation in the mud, especially after a live service push and the decisions to cancel many of those projects, its decision-making is starting to impact the single player titles the brand is best known for.

Hermen has got to go...
Not the kind of title that helps you monetize users.
What, did Hulst and Kojima fall out?
This is completely baffling - at least with the live service it made SOME sort of cynical business sense in wanting to make the next Fortnite or whatever.
Welcome back 2006 Sony, I guess
Sony:
Help fund a game about delivering parcels were you have to use weapons from your own piss to defeat tar ghosts? Absolutely
Help fund a stealth action game from one of the best to do it in the genre? Hell no.
Maybe Physint sounds too much like Physical and they got scared. Atleast Fairgames is still on the go. What is going ON
It feels good to have XBOX back on stage again. The market needs competition!
At this point I'm just expecting Hermen to come and pee through my letterbox.
This is why announcing games years before they are in any state to be show is a bad idea.
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
Sony is on a generational run right now, and not a good one. They've "switched up on a day one" with Kojima now.
And Xbox picking up this game does not fill me with any confidence at all. We’ve already seen that they have major issues in quality control. Least we forget that this was the same company that released Redfall?
Xbox: Our prices are going up, we can't decide a direction and we're trying to find out who keeps pushing AI!
Sony: I can still see my feet. Better get the shotgun out.
Nintendo: Play games dammit. Kirby round.
Like my god, you wouldn't believe that only one of the companies has mastered the art of just "Look! Games!"
Once again, Sony stealth-shoots itself in the foot. Except without the stealth bit.
I guess we should be grateful it wasn't in Sony's capabilities to shutter Kojima Studios, which I'm sure they would have done if it made a fast buck for the shareholders.
There has to have been a reason them to walk away. They won't have done it on a whim.
It's a shame as I wasn't a fan of Death Stranding but this sounded like it could be a spiritual successor to MGS
@ShadowRJ Redfall's problem was they were an offshoot of a single player team trying to make a multiplayer game with no experience or oversight. Kojima Productions are developing their bread and butter with this game at the least. They also had minimal oversight from Sony while making Death Stranding 1 and 2, so I'm not sure the Phili Spencer special of not really watching over their development teams will be an issue, and that's assuming Asha would even take that same hands off approach.
Sony is useless, greedy, incompetent and heartless. F u k em
This is bizarre - it's a guaranteed money-maker. It doesn't sound as niche as OD or even Death Stranding was, and I fully expect OD to sell well.
Maybe they tried to control the game too much and didn't like Kojima likely ignoring that completely?
Sony aren't exactly winning hearts and minds right now, are they? 😕
Impossible to comment on this specific title as we dont know how the game is progressing behind the scenes or what led to the decision but on the face of it, this is yet more baffling news - and based on the comments from Kojima and Kojima productions on Twitter, it does make me question the future relationship they will have with Playstation. Its not a surprise to see Xbox partner up on this. Another easy PR win for them.
@Hyena_socks Hermen may have asked to slip in microtransactions for weapons development resources and Kojima got Phantom Pain flashbacks.
@Orpheus79V Redfall began production in order to increase the sale price of ZeniMax, however Microsoft then took the reins and then responsibility as far as I’m concerned. The alarming thing for me is that Phil Spencer said the review scores were far lower than predicted…..he predicted that Redfall would review well!!!
I cannot see myself continuing with Sony after decades of loyalty.. This is getting ridiculous with how their decisions are getting completely and utterly mismanaged to all hell. I stayed on PlayStation back in the day because of games like Uncharted and God of War, but I bought a PlayStation 3 because of Metal Gear 4, what with the power of hideo Kojimas talents. I imagine a new uncharted would be a complete mess with the way they handle all their games now, Nathan Drake would either be killed off right at the beginning or just a bit part player. No, this is coming to an end for me with how Sony are managing their business. Nintendo or (crazily) Xbox for me next gen..
Dropped the ball. Focused on live service rubbish when they should have been focusing on stuff like Koji Pro games.
Maybe it was turning more into a tv show or series. I kid, I love Kojima but here, I have no idea so until I have a point, I will go without saying.
Is there no limit to the stupidity and greed of current Sony?
It is shocking.
Every time you think Sony can't possibly get worse than they already are, they pull s*** like this 💀
I'm happy the project isn't dead thanks to Xbox but christ alive how on earth do you cancel a KOJIMA-EXCLUSIVE but still hold onto stuff like Fairgames and Horizon Hunters Gathering 😭
@Rob_230 We can infer that no need is good news. The games we do have news on, like Fairgames, 4Loop, Horizon etc. sounds like it's all bad news and they'll be canned soon.
I don't get cancelling a single player game in a genre from the guy who defined said genre when he's best mates with you, you let him use your own tech, and it costs relatively little compared to buying a studio that was run by a woman who hadn't actually made a game in 15 years.
I would like to think Sony has good reasons for doing this. But they've made a fair few poor business decisions in recent years, certainly from my perspective. So I can't say I have any confidence they know what they're doing here.
As a long time Playstation fan, they are just making so many baffling decisions, they've really made it hard to defend/support tthem. I haven't loved any of their first party releases in years, probably GoW 18 was the last. A portable gaming PC is now do tempting because at this stage I can't see myself buying a PS6. And I've bought a ps1-5, psp, and psvita
Sony have lost the plot. I don’t recognise this company anymore!
Bu-but I wanted to play this game....
This is like an April fools headline. But it's September.
I'm so done with PlayStation right now. If it wasn't for my comical library of games I'd be outta here. It won't happen because a) Xbox is utterly inept, and b) nobody cares about Xbox, but I hope Xbox obliterates PlayStation next gen.
Sony is doing its best to prove that the third console curse is real.
The PS6 generation is going to be a disaster for them. Hopefully they can recover like they did for the PS3 but that would require new management and a new direction. I am considering jumping to PC or even Xbox for a second time after the 360 or just remain exclusive to the Switch 2.
Hard to believe Hulst had any saying on this since it was one of the first projects he announced after getting appointed as head of their studios and he's close to Kojima. It probably came from above (Nishino or Totoki, most likely — which could mean that Hulst days at Sony are numbered).
And I’d guess Sony backed out because they realized it wouldn't be worth investing heavily in a project where they don't own the IP.
One thing I think a lot of people are missing here was that Kojima wasn't just working with and using SIEs Resources but Sony Pictures were also involved with this Game so Two of Sonys divisions had a hand in this games development and it probably got to expensive with nothing to show for it
Perhaps 80% of the budget was gonna go to hiring Kojima's current favorite celebrities to star in it.
Saves a few hundred million. Line graph goes up. Bigger bonuses for the lads.
Eh. Playstation ends in January 2028 anyway.
This has all the hallmarks of Hermen Hulst, the masterful head who continues to make astoundingly brilliant decisions on games. Maybe Kojima balked at Herman's demand of making Physint into a live service game with microtransactions. In the meantime, we'll see Physint as an Xbox exclusive, while Herman still has the promise of Fairgames and Horizon Hunters Gathering as their live service saviors.
I can only imagine the budget for this was growing day by day at a rapid rate, especially when you take into account the Sony Film Productions side of the project (which can’t be in that greater shape either), and the powers that be got cold feet, see this as a quick way to save money on a spreadsheet so they’ll look good, without looking at the long term.
So depressing. Death Stranding didn’t really gel with me, but I love the fact Kojima is just out there making games like that. This one I had really high hopes for. This really is starting to look like we’re watching the empire fall isn’t it.
LMAO an actual joke of a company, every week they move further away from the "for the gamers" to the "for the shareholders"
I dont even like Kojima games but this is actually insane, add another generational fumble to the bag, I would love to know why and who made that choice.
