'We're Definitely Pursuing Another Mortal Kombat': Ed Boon Speaks Amid Injustice 3 Rumours 1

With the Mortal Kombat 2 movie debuting in US theatres later this week, we doubt series creator Ed Boon was ever going to shy away from new games in the franchise. But it’s interesting to hear him confirm a new project as Injustice 3 rumours heat up.

Speaking with Collider, via IGN, here’s what he said:

“We're definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more, as well, so there are a lot of parts on the stove, not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot. So, we’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.”

So he’s not necessarily confirming here that dev NetherRealm’s next title will necessarily be Mortal Kombat; he’s just saying his team’s continuing to pursue the franchise, both in games and outside of it.

To be honest, we think the series could do with a bit of a rest at this point. While we liked Mortal Kombat 1 fine, there wasn’t much pent-up anticipation for it following directly on from Mortal Kombat 11.

In fact, the game underperformed by series standards, and while the dev originally said it would support the title for “years to come”, it ultimately pulled the plug on new content after just 20 months.

As we reported recently, it does look like Netherrealm is gearing up for a new Injustice, which will be the first entry in the DC fighting game franchise in almost ten years.

We loved both of the games in the series so far, and we’ve heard great things about the comics, too.

What do you want out of NetherRealm next? Are you ready for more Mortal Kombat, or is it time for that series to take a break? Are you amped for another Injustice instead? Let us know below.
