The roguelike genre is one that's traditionally almost entirely about gameplay, but in Returnal, developer Housemarque proved you can still craft an interesting story around the loop of starting over again and again. In next month's Saros, it appears to be leaning even more heavily into that aspect.
The studio has released a new video that blends gameplay and an interview together, providing more information on the characters fuelling the story. In case you missed it, here's the official setup for Saros plot-wise:
Beneath the shadow of an ominous eclipse, Arjun Devraj (Rahul Kohli, star of The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass) is a Soltari enforcer who will stop at nothing to pursue answers on the shape-shifting world of Carcosa, a planet filled with dark secrets and hostile inhabitants.
With protagonist Arjun at the centre, there's a cast of characters alongside you who slowly lose their minds, as depicted through cutscenes. "The more the characters learn, the more the sense of dread and despair grows, and the friction between the crew increases, and we can see how they'll handle that in different ways," explained narrative lead William Shaughnessy.
Jane Perry, who voiced Selene in Returnal, returns as a side character in Saros. She plays a character called Sheridan, and Rahul Kohli is also part of the cast as the lead character. Saros launches for PS5 on 30th April 2026; are you picking this one up? Let us know in the comments below.

I’m going into this as blind as possible, so I’m not watching the video, but the narrative was a big part of why I enjoyed Returnal, as good as the gameplay was. The story part after the Hyperion boss was stellar the first time I experienced it.
Thus I’m similarily hoping that Saros also delivers on both fronts.
Fantastic. Now if they can only stop injecting more rogue like into my story games.
Returnal is my fav Sony published game this gen. Very excited for Saros 🔥
I was obsessed with Returnal. Played +50h on Steam, game wasn't running very well on PC so i bought a PS5 and then played +100h there and got the Platinum. Pre-ordered this one last Friday and i can't wait to COME BACK STRONGER
Returnal still is, in my opinion, the best PS5 game until now. Let's see if Saros can take its spot
I had my problems with Returnal, but I maintain the opinion that it's easily the most unique game from Sony this gen. It must have done something right with me that I was willing to grind for the platinum trophy. I trust Housemarque to do some cool s**t with Saros.
yes, I have pre-ordered the game; and I've never pre-ordered a game before, this is my first time, but I love Returnal so much that I just can't wait for Saros.
@Balaam_ too true hate rogue likes waste of time
Already said day 1 purchase, don't need anymore convincing.
@Glotny The feeling leading up to that boss with the music was just incredible
@Balaam_ @trev666 basically came to say the same.
OK I loved Hades. ...Hades 2 didn't catch me so much...
I think my rougelite need was fulfilled.
I even have enough of Vampire Survivors or Balatro...
I don't want to know ANYTHING about the story, all I want to know is if they streamlined the deaths a bit from Returnal. Dying and losing over an hour to get back where you were, possibly to die again and repeat this repeatedly for days, was one of the most demoralising intended gameplay loops I have experienced in gaming.
I'm not expecting no grind, but it was just too brutal and let down what was otherwise a generational game.
i'm gonna be honest i wasn't 100% sold on saros , and wasn't sure if i was going to play it , but the more and more i see and hear of it , my mind is quickly changing.
I will get the PC port. Oh wait...
Anyway, to be honest the game doesn't seem that appealing to me. I got returnal in the previous discounts but I have not had the chance to play it yet.
@themightyant They said this back when they announced the game, which I'm sure was stated directly because of how punishing Returnal could be.
"A key gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable. After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to “come back stronger” to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa."
Great for those that love the genre i guess, but it's not gonna make me play it. Tried Returnal for a few hours last year, didn't touch it since.
Well they want us to love the characters and enjoy the story/themes, I couldn't care less.
Gameplay first, always will.
@Glotny Same here. I've not watched or read anything since the reveal trailer and the first snippet of gameplay. When you know you will be purchasing the game on the merits of the developer, going in blind is rewarding!
@CRASH64
Love hearing this. Returnal deserved so much more success. It’s my favorite game period this gen.
@belmont Playyyyyy it. It’s so good. But you do have to give it a fair shake. I’m not some amazing gamer, but I stuck with Returnal through some frustration over dying, but it became my favorite game of the gen. Once your skill gets to the right place, you feel like a god.
I'm day one minus two with tghe digital deluxe. Absolutely loved Returnal and there's still nothing like it.
@Glotny they did say this, but Returnal ALSO had permanent weapon upgrades, micro-progression. But that wasn’t really the problem, it was having to do the whole run again to get powerful enough to take on the part where you died. That took an hour or more.
Yes there were shortcuts and you could skip to the later stages more quickly BUT, and this is the crucial part, you would be weaker and be making the challenge harder, virtually impossible for normal players.
It’s a bit like Breath of the Wild where you COULD go straight to the final boss and skip the game but you would’ve been so weak you’d die unless you have super human reflexes. You’d have to play perfectly to win.
It’s true they hinted that this was different but devils in the details, until I see if it actually has an impact and means not spending an hour or more to come back at the same power level i will be on the fence.
