Directive 8020 Promises 'Sharper Visuals' with PS5 Pro's Updated PSSR 2 Upscaler 1

Directive 8020, the Alien-inspired sci-fi horror from Until Dawn creator Supermassive Games, looks to be a real return to form for the UK-based narrative game dev.

And it’ll look and play best on the PS5 Pro, thanks to a series of improvements detailed on the PS Blog.

Most importantly, the game will take advantage of the supercharged system’s new PSSR 2 upscaler, which Studio Technical Director Will Burdon says will “enhance image detail and clarity frame by frame, allowing environments, character models, and subtle environmental storytelling to appear crisp and well-defined”.

The AI-based upscaler is able to take a lower resolution internal image and transform it into a clean 4K one, freeing up computational resources for elsewhere.

In this instance the title will take advantage of advanced ray tracing, better shadow rendering, and smoother performance.

It’s interesting to see Sony work with Supermassive Games to highlight these features so prominently; it does feel like it’s stepping up its PS5 Pro marketing since the introduction of PSSR 2 earlier this month.

In addition, Directive 8020 will take full advantage of the entire PS5 experience, using the DualSense’s motion sensors, speakers, and haptic feedback to create a more immersive adventure.

PlayStation is eager to double down on its message here: the best place to play is on PS5.

But will you be picking up Directive 8020 when it releases on 12th May? And which console will you be buying it for? Let us know in the comments section below.
