As promised, longstanding Japanese developer CyberConnect 2 has announced its mysterious 30th anniversary project... and it's actually a brand new .hack game!

Officially titled .hack//ZERO, it's apparently going to be an entirely fresh start for the classic series. Platforms are yet to be confirmed, but we're assuming this isn't just some weird mobile revival.

You can catch the teaser trailer above, which reveals a few key characters.

For those totally out of the loop, .hack is an action RPG franchise that hinges on the stories of players inside a virtual reality game named 'The World'.

Its latest release was .hack//G.U. Last Recode for the PS4, back in 2017 — a remastered collection of two PS2 titles.

So, as you can imagine, the reveal of a totally new instalment is a big deal; this is a property that's pretty much been on ice since the PS3 generation.

Interestingly, ZERO is going to be self-published by CyberConnect 2 with permission from property holder Bandai Namco.

".hack//Z.E.R.O. will be a novel RPG experience that blends the series’ trademark duality of fantasy (game world) and reality (real world) with modern expectations, infused with 100% pure CyberConnect2 spirit. The game will be enjoyable for both veteran fans and new players alike," reads the official website
