Today, 30th May 2025, MultiVersus is being delisted from digital stores and the servers are being switched off, putting an end to a very rocky road for the platform fighter.
Once the game is taken down, it will only be playable offline. If you want to have access to it, you'll need to have logged in at least once during Season 5.
It's a sad end to what was, at one point, an extremely popular free-to-play fighting game.
Launching in open beta in 2022, it grew so popular that its status as an open beta was practically forgotten, with developer Player First Games embracing the enthusiasm and updating it with cosmetic items, new characters, and so on.
However, it couldn't keep up with player demand, and eventually, the studio ended the open beta phase after about a year in order to overhaul the game for a proper, full launch.
When it came back in May 2024, it never fully recovered, failing to make an impact in the same way it did the first time despite improvements pretty much across the board.
We always rather liked MultiVersus; while it had its issues, we were fans of its unusual but novel character roster, and the core action was lots of fun.
However you felt about the game, publisher Warner Bros. reported that it massively underperformed, so it was no real surprise when the announcement of its sunsetting came at the start of this year.
Are you a fan of MultiVersus? Will you be continuing to enjoy it offline, or are you done with the colourful Smash-like fighter? Discuss in the comments section below.

And nothing of value was lost
Good riddance
It's insane how they fumbled with all the intellectual properties at there disposal
It's a shame, but they killed this one all on their own.
This is why I don't play live service games.
If they had also copied Smash's business model it would still be alive and thriving. Unfortunately for them WB's execs only speak in money, the whole company is doomed.
Maybe I'll buy it in cex
Landfill with all these scrap projects getting pretty full these days
Imagine putting all your time and money into a live service game for it to only be deleted permanently from existence 🤑🤑🤑👀
I've tried this a couple of weeks, but the monitization was just too punishing.
I want to play games, not have a second day job.
If they hadn't been so greedy, it would probably still be popular.
That's a shame. I really liked this brawler for the 10 minutes that I played it!
@AshleighKinsella
I don't like them either, but look at Hoyoverse or Fortnite. Guys made millions. So saying nobody wants them is just wrong.
I still won't play them, but that's the kind of golden goose the companies are chasing.
I wouldn’t say the game had “improvements across the board” as you state in the article. Even the game’s most diehard fans admit the Beta version was far superior to the finalized game that relaunched last year.
@Can-You-Believe-Sith I wouldn't mind it. After I beat a certain game, I never replay it, so if they got months of actual fun/enjoyment, it wasn't wasted money.
Will they unlock all the content?
How long till Sammy puts out an article telling us live service games are great? Or does that only happen when it's a Sony live service flop?
Fond memories of giving this a go in beta but I don't think I played it for more than an hour. Guess that says it all
Rest in piss you will not be missed.
PS I am sorry for all the people on production who lose all that time working on this hopefully they are able to land on there feet.
They fumbled this massively when they closed a successful beta for a year. They should have just made that the game, then been a bit more generous with mtx and the massive roster of characters they had, and it could have been a hit.
A certain Queen song comes to mind.....
@PloverNutter I thought the exact same thing after reading that quote and felt it was a opinion shared by many that the beta was better in many respects 🤷♂️
Thank you for the kind words to a fun game people overlook. I loved what the beta had. The relaunch was rocky and they just didn't fix the issues and kept changing gameplay too often. I think it could have been fixed still. I've never been competitive, but really loved this game.
I got 60 hours out of it and didnt pay a dime. No complaints from me. I dont get mad at free games.
I don't mind these free live service games it's the ones we pay for that are the problem I wish they'd all disappear in to oblivion and it's looking good for me hopefully
The beta was better! Could have been a great game if the grind for xp wasn’t insane and the rewards were worth it
The mini games were retro flash quality
It was a mess but the core fighting game actually really fun
Warner Bros need to learn that regurgitating all their IP into indistinguishable slop isn't a path to success. Sick of it, and I think alot of people are.
This is just another sign that Sony needs a smash bros type game. They can put all the classic playstation characters in it like Dante, Big daddy, Raiden, Cole MacGrath... Cole MacGrath again.
Winner for the best fighter of the year two times everyone.
I don't touch f2p games so it's no loss to me.
@Skyliner no they're not and that's one reason why the game was so successful early on. But you have to have a great underlying system, and the team just couldn't nail down proper upgrades - instead they took the game down for a year killing all the momentum and then relaunched it at a ***** state.
I don't mind a smorgasbord of IPs in a game as long as the game is fun. But that's just it - it HAS to be fun
@Keyblade-Dan I mean the ingame music was pretty good
@Dominator2885 come on, you would’ve never liked them regardless because multiplayer is hated here.
@Wardenknight133 haha, good joke 😂 smash and multiversus aren’t in the same category as actual fighting games
@nomither6 actually I did enjoy it and had a lot of fun.
I just never stuck with it cause live service games are a waste of time for me and my tastes.
If it's popular, why is it getting shut down? Does it cost more to keep it running than what they earn from it?
@AshleighKinsella Just let me pay you a set amount and play the game.
Liveservice good or not the fun is always locked behind a wall. Paywall or a wall of time. Or the the worst FOMO with time and money as a combo.
@ExReey Same here i want to relax not the daily you have to log in.
@nomither6 Something is really wrong because it no longer around. Even if it only had a steady fanbase it would be around. Monetisation seem a big issue here.
@CutchuSlow basically, yeah — it doesn't matter if a game has a really vocal fanbase, if it's not making money, I imagine it's just cheaper to shut the servers down.
