Tekken 8 Pushes the Armor King Panic Button Amid Brutal Fan Backlash

I love Armour King and really wish he was in the base game but i can't believe all the DLC characters barring Clive are either DLC characters from Tekken 7 or base game characters from Tekken 7. I said this last time but hate MK1 all you want but Noob aside none of the DLC characters were from the previous entry. This is shameful behaviour but hey i guess we have a rough idea on what the Tekken 9 DLC line up will be 🙄

@DennisReynolds Some were even missing im MK1 as selectable characters. To be fair fighting games are a rehash and now you pay for main characters as DLC.

@DennisReynolds I really don't recall a fighting game series that hasn't reused DLC characters so often. I feel like I'm fine with it as long as the game that it's being introduced in innovates enough in the gameplay to where it feels fresh.

@DennisReynolds A lot of fighting games usually reused DLC characters from previous games. SF 6 season 1 for example has Ed and Akuma which was DLC in SF 5, although for SF 6 both characters got redesigned that made them looks and play quite different compare to their SF 5 version.

But imho the problem with Tekken 8 DLC is not because they're DLC from Tekken 7. But the character looks and plays quite the same, especially Lidia and Fakhuram. If the character looks and plays different compare to Tekken 7, i think there will be less complaint.

And there's season 2 early balance patch that got massive complaint by Tekken community.

Man I misread that title badly, I thought I saw “plushie” and “king” in the same title - granted, it seemed odd, but my heart did skip a beat.

@PuppetMaster Clive aside every character was either base game or DLC from the previous entry. It wouldn't be an issue if it was one or two characters but were literally paying for T7 season passes again.

Namco and Konami are the Japanese equivalent of EA and Ubisoft. If they can find a way for a cheap buck, they will.

@DennisReynolds It is inevitable. When comes to fighting games, publisher/devs usually listen to their fanbase demands about which old characters that should make a comeback. I mean, outside Clive, Lydia, and Fakhuram, characters like Eddy, Heihachi, Anna, and Armor King are fans favourite. I'm sure for season 3 they will bring more fans favorite like Julia, Kunimitsu, Lei Wulong, Marduk, etc.

@PuppetMaster Eddy and Heihachi could have easily been part of the base roster as could Armour King and Anna. I can easily think of tons of characters they could have used instead who weren't in the previous game.

I think the Tekken 'problem' is that it launched with an already very full roster, and now it's hard to scramble for characters that are going to be well received. In fairness, the T7 returners will have adjusted move sets as everyone plays quite different in 8.

I never did pick up Fahk. but there's probably more kickboxing types than any other style (beyond possibly 'mishima' at this point. I think Lei could be cool, with his 5 forms, but a new fighting style will be interesting!

Just to add to your conversation here.
I am purely casual when it comes to fighting games these days, but 1 of the things I have always hated is when a character from previous outings is changed too much - add something to the character, fine, but don't change them significantly.

This is something which is pretty consistently hated, and makes it really difficult for fighting games when planning both base game rosters and dlc - do you:
A) add a lot of 'fan favourites', but risk the criticism of 'its just the same game' / or if dlc 'they should have just been in the base game'.
Or, B) do the same, but change up some of the characters to avoid the above, but potentially creating a backlash against the changes, and a lack of trust in the series from fans who dont like this.
Or, C) add a lot of new characters, expanding the roster pool further, but risk alienating old fans by missing favourites - I have often in the past not bought a game in a series until my favourites are confirmed.

Its a tricky balancing act to be sure, particularly when games run more and more to the method of smallish base roster, lots of dlc packs, yet have enormous roster pools of potential fan favourites.

Remember when you just unlocked characters by playing the game? Halcyon days, indeed.

Tekken 8 has a very robust 32 char base roster, bigger than most other fighting games of its class & with T7's huge final roster too it makes sense that a lot of DLC would end up being repeats. But you got to throw in an lapsed fighter in there every once in a while to balance it out, like SF6 with Elena.

I got it for father's day last year and my girlfriend played it more than me I tried the story but other than that I won't play it again. Last 2 games I played was the best that is Tekken 3 and then Tag Tournament 1 on PS2.

@8thDoctor That is true but its jarring to see some characters as DLC. It's like adding Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li as DLC in a SF game.
