Sony's better-than-expected PS Portal device will no longer offer the best handheld experience for The Last of Us 2 Remastered, as developer Naughty Dog has confirmed the Steam Deck will be officially supported when the PC port arrives later this week.
Rather than streaming the game from your PS5 via an internet connection, the PC version will be downloaded and then playable natively from a Steam Deck. This means there won't be any network-related issues to contend with and should play better in effectively every way — as long as there aren't any PC bugs or glitches.
The Last of Us has a history of dodgy PC ports after the first title stumbled out of the blocks, but was fixed in the many months following its release. The Last of Us 2 Remastered comes to PC on 3rd April 2025.
Official Steam Deck support wasn't the focus for Naughty Dog when it ported the first game to PC, so the verification took a backseat as it fixed the original's disappointing port. With the sequel, however, support is there from day one. Will you be playing The Last of Us 2 in this fashion? Let us know in the comments below.

The majority of Sony games are Steam Deck verified. The ones I tried indeed play very well.
If the internet connection is great, I‘d rather play games with 60 fps via PS Portal. I just can’t play games on 30 fps any more, Tears of the Kingdom confirmed it for me.
Still will lack the DualSense controller quality-of-life comfort features that the Portal offers. Also the fact that you have to buy the game again, whereas you don’t if you have a Portal. If you’re playing it somewhere that you don’t have a good internet connection then the SteamDeck version might be nice. But you always have your phone and its hotspot with you and the Portal has performed well for me even with hotspot connection in my experience.
This could end up being good practice for their "rumoured" new hand held.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare you usually don not pay much attention to graphics on such a small screen. 30 FPS is more noticeable, of course, but you'll become accustomed to it after a while. FSR and tweaking some graphical options help a lot to get a smooth overall experience with most playable game (verified runs great out of the box).
For me the main problem is lack of immersion — playing TLoU on a big screen sitting in your own house feels much better than rushing it somewhere on a go. That is why I prefer using steam deck even during longest journeys for different indie games — especially on those centered around gameplay, not story.
I played Days gone on the deck and it worked very well (very much like RDR2) visually very nice and you do get used to the lower frame rate. I'm sure this will run pretty well.
Always tlou, we need Gran Turismo on PC!
I get I'm not the target market for this, but I've a 65" LGC3 for a reason.
I'd rather just read a book than muddle through on a tiny screen if I'm on the go.
Having owned a PS Portal, the Steam Deck also streams games on the PS5 better than the Portal too.
Of course you’re paying double the price of a Portal, but as using it for PC games that perform better than on console, old gems you can’t access on consoles and for a better remote play experience than the portal, it’s a no brainer.
Well I've not played either of them. Maybe time to pop one on deck.
@tameshiyaku Let us PlayStation owners please have some exclusives. You guys get every bell and whistle for a fraction of the cost…
@Sanquine still mainly on playstation anyways, but I'd really like GT on the go and at home with pcvr since I'm not buying psvr2.
@DonJorginho That isn't my experience at all. I own both and much prefer the Portal for streaming. The shape is more ergonomic, the haptics are much better and the screen is bigger. Also, the interface is cleaner and snappier than using Chiaki4Deck.
The OLED steam deck also has this really annoying bug where the streaming quality will drop 10 minutes into playing and you need to reconnect to get it working OK again. They need to sort that.
Don't get me wrong, I love both devices, but after getting a portal I'm finding it hard to go back to streaming on the deck.
@Jey887 It’s definitely case by case,
I used the Portal and Chiaki4Deck and neither felt good; then switched to the PXPlay app on Linux and it runs better than either, and also the SteamDeck is leagues above the Portal in terms of it’s OLED screen and ergonomics.
But some people who have steam decks found the portal better and vice verse, that’s the beauty /s of cloud devices and streaming.
