Forget those clickbait YouTube thumbnails that appeared to imply the contrary: Tommy Vercetti still can’t swim in GTA Vice City in the GTA Trilogy. Footage of Rockstar’s remaster is beginning to be shared online, and naturally one of the first things fans have been trying is jumping in the ocean. As you can see from the timestamp embedded above, however, it doesn’t end well.

Wasted!

Vercetti’s inability to swim has been a sore point for well over a decade now. Vice City is, of course, inspired by Miami, and its rich blue waters seem ripe for paddling. The truth is that the Scottish developer didn’t have time to add the system into the original, and text in its PS2 manual encourages you to stay out of the water due to the presence of sharks.

Some mods added to the game in the years since its 2002 debut have incorporated swimming systems, and there was some hope that Rockstar would retroactively integrate something similar in the remaster. However, leaked footage confirms that the open world classic plays identically to the original, which means you’ll drown should you fall into Vice City’s crisp oceans.
