Update: Sony has now officially confirmed, as part of a PlayStation Blog post, that PSVR games will not be compatible with the PS5's new HD Camera.
Original Story: Many had been pondering whether the PlayStation 5’s new HD camera would be compatible with PlayStation VR, but it looks like you’re going to have to keep your existing PlayStation Camera kicking around. While it’s ambiguous enough to not be complete confirmation – we’ll check with Sony to be sure – an FAQ published by the platform holder mentions that the “[PS5’s] HD Camera is not compatible with PS4 games, please connect a PlayStation Camera via a PlayStation Camera adaptor”.
But what’s this adaptor that’s mentioned? Well, don’t worry too much about that: as we reported previously, you’ll be able to apply for this free-of-charge from the platform holder, and we’ll be sure to update you on what you need to do as soon as we have more information on it. It’s a shame that the new HD Camera can’t be used as we’d have preferred to have less hardware on our desk, but it’s not the end of the world, is it?

Maybe I'm missing something but does anyone really need the new camera if there's no new headset just yet? Streamers maybe.
I wish we could have ordered our adaptor with our PS5. Now I'll have to hold onto my PS4 so I can play PSVR.
Well, looks like I’ll be keeping the old camera until there is a new model PSVR. Shame, I was hoping the new camera might improve tracking of the move controllers, but I guess the camera was never the problem anyway given how well the headset and DS4 are tracked.
@Bdbrady Yeah, that’s the only thing that’s slightly annoying. Guess I’ll just have to drop VR until the adaptor arrives.
That's....odd? Shouldn't really have to jump through an additional hoop for us to play PSVR on the PS5, why not ship this adapter with the console? You get RE7 with the ps plus collection on Day One, so wouldn't they want you playing that on PSVR on day one as well... Ok, I'm hoping the camera will eventually be used for PSVR2 down the line and they don't release another "updated" camera with that.
So there really is no point in buying the new camera then.
So much for BC they said that psvr is compatible with PS5 but this is not what I had in mind
@Medic_Alert The unsupported games list more or less confirms old PSVR games will work, and the free adapter offer indicates it too. I mean, yeah there will be a whole new PSVR assembly at some point (that will have it's own BC concerns I guess?) but they did confirm a while back that old PSVR will work. It's just.....messy? They removed a port required for a supported peripheral, have a new peripheral that for unknown reasons doesn't work with the old games even though that makes no sense, and will have an adapter available to use the old peripheral with the old games. It seems like the weirdest way to handle it, right down to shipping people free stuff because you stripped the required port for their old stuff you told them they can still use.....but...that's where they are!
For me the whole point of a camera should be that during games with my mates like fifa, i should be able to see them in the corners of the screen while i chat, why doesnt it do that?
@Medic_Alert The new camera is being advertised primarily at streamers so far. PSVR is fully supported on PS5 so not being abandoned at all.
Next-gen PSVR probably won't require a camera.
@DavidJC Maybe it will, we'll need to wait for more info on the PS5's UI.
@huyi
But it is compatible with ps5. We know that as they tested the games and it’s only Robinson that’s not. Hopefully they’ll get a res boost if any have dynamic res.
@itsMeaningless
I’m hoping this means PSVR2 is far enough along to have impacted this camera. Either having new tech or not needing a camera due to inside out tracking.
That is mad. Well I guess I’ll be after an adapter for my PS4 camera rather than the new PS5 camera as I have PlayStation VR.
I wonder what does this mean for backward compatible PS VR games once PSVR2 launches. I don't have PSVR, but I'm definitely getting the new version whenever it releases on PS5. I just assumed all PS4 games would work on the new headset with the new camera, but now I'm not so sure. Hopefully it's all compatible, as it'd be kinda silly to buy a new PSVR and missing out on the PS4 VR games that supposedly wouldn't be compatible.
All good. Anyone with PSVR will already have the old camera anyway, and the free adaptor is a nice touch.
I'll get this camera anyway to give the new features a try.
@itsMeaningless
You get sick? That blows. Feel really sorry for people who can’t play VR, but Astro Bot is one of the best platformers of all time, so there is that. Maybe try racing and flight games. Wipeout is phenomenal.
Well that's not a huge loss, but what does this mean for PS VR?
It raises the possibility of PSVR 2 having internal tracking since the HD camera doesn't support VR, unless it'll be required for the new one.
Well at least that's saved me £50 if i dont need the new camera to play VR. Would be nice to get the adapter for release day thou.
What the frak! 😂 I pre ordered the camera hoping it would make PSVR tracking a little better.
Time to cancel it then.
Then what the hell is the point of this thing....
@HotGoomba I think this further legitimizes what I and others have said that whatever the next version of PSVR is will be closer to what Occulus Quest is. The controller light bar facing the player could mean that the tracking is on the headset itself and if the camera isn’t for VR as well that could be further proof. The other two options is it is needed for PSVR 2 but tracks differently so just isn’t compatible with the current version or the worst option they just aren’t moving forward with VR at all
Thanks for the news.
HD camera preorder canceled
I just saved a few bucks
@NEStalgia Thoughts on why it can't work? The 2 lenses don't look much different, and the PS4 camera has to plug into USB via adapter so it can't be that. If it's the individual games not knowing the ID for the PS5 camera a simple update with the ID would work.
It's not like the camera does a lot of work, it just reads the headset position I think. I have PSVR and trying to get the camera to center the headset is the worst. I only play sitting down and move as little as possible. And I don't see why a new camera can track my tired sitting self.
@rjejr because Sony reasons, that's why.
It honestly doesnt make any sense . I used to think Sony designed things to make you have to buy accessories, but this time they're saying you CAN'T buy the accessory.
Mostly i get the sense that Sony internally consists of many unrelated uncoordinated teams, and the right hand doesn't know the left exists and you end up with inexplicable incompatibility between components that with any foresight and planning should have worked.
It could be an id. It could be the way it streams data is some other format or speed. But this is stuff you would think would be considered.
What amazes me is that psvr bc seems entirely an afterthought. And yet they dedicated the entire week before ps5 preorders to showcasing psvr1 games....
@NEStalgia Thanks. Yeah that PSVR week was a very clueless Nintendo move.
I suppose, like others have said, PSVR2 won't need a camera so they didn't bother making this "social influencer" camera work, but it still weird. Won't work <> can't work
@rjejr it's a word world we live in. Sony acts like old Nintendo, Nintendo plays XBox games, and Xbox just gives you everything for free. Someone has to do Sega now and release a half dozen unused consoles every other year. Maybe that's Amazons role.
Psvr2 I'm hoping will have the camera in the hmd. But knowing Sony you'll just need the ps5 camera for psvr2 and the ps4 camera for psvr1 and you'll have to pay to buy the psvr2 compatible version of your psvr1 games but with an upgrade path of you buy the psvr1 version of you add more money. Except skyrim vr which you can only purchase from your Xbox.
I’m thinking PSVR is looking dead to me for now , I have ordered the camera especially thinking it would work and save me time etc now it seems to use it I’d need two cameras , it’s enough of a faf as it is , time to put the ole girl away and await what ever new stuff they have coming. Sad as yeah it was a gimmick but as gimmicks go it was all right
@I_Like_It I would be shocked if PS5 had a wireless VR headset. I don't believe any headset yet exists that is wireless without it being a self contained system (as in it doesn't connect to a PC or console for the processing power).
Haha what's the point then?
@NEStalgia When Sony did the teardown vid of the PS5 when he took 1 panel off there should have been an entire bank of ports marked PSVR, PSVR2, USB-C, USB, OTHER. 😂
I feel like there are a couple of fairly inexpensive VR headsets out there now that are self contained battery operated. Since the PSVR2 shouldn't need a battery, just plug it in PS5 isn't going anywhere, nor much computing power since the PS5 does most of the work, they should be able to build motion sensors and gyros into the headset yet still keep the price down.
Some built in headphones, like nearly every other VR headset seems to have, would also be nice. 1 reason I don't use mine much is wires, wires everywhere.
Seems a wasted opportunity to me ho well save myself 50 pounds then as i will never need this
So are they saying that the inevitable PSVR2 wont play PSVR games?
Makes me wonder/worry that PSVR2 won't play the PS4 titles which means I will need to hold onto my old VR head and move controller (actually impressive a PS3 device is still supported in PS5).
