No Man's Sky crops up every now and again, and every time it does, there's some gigantic update. The latest is Origins, a typically enormous, game-changing overhaul. The update is out right now on PlayStation 4 with a free, 11GB patch.
So, what could Origins possibly add to the already stuffed space exploration game? Well, loads, it turns out. The patch notes, as always, are massive, so we'll go through some of the larger points here.
Origins makes the game's universe "stranger, richer and more varied". Millions of new planets have been added to the galactic map, and worlds are now even more diverse than ever. More varied terrain, huge buildings, more NPC interactions, lots of new plant and animal life, and extreme weather effects have been incorporated, such as volcanic eruptions, lightning, and tornadoes. And, finally, those giant sand worms from early trailers are actually in the game.
Some planetary systems now might have two or even three stars, and new cloud tech and colour variants give each planet an even more unique feel. The user interface has been refreshed to make navigating the menus a little more streamlined, and photo mode has had an overhaul too.
The amount of new stuff is frankly ridiculous. Check out the full patch notes to learn more, and get downloading Origins to check it out. Will you be diving back into No Man's Sky? Ride giant space insects into the comments section below.

I think this is definitely one to test out on my PS5.
Still can't play as a woman?
Crazy how much they've added.
@b1ackjack Last time I checked, it was OK - certainly very playable, but have to admit I look at the buttery smooth framerates on more powerful platforms with a very envious eye. Hoping we get some improvrments on PS5, if we do I'll likely start from scratch and enjoy the full experience.
Got to give Hello Games credit where it's due - the ongoing support and content for NMS has been astoundingly good. Love it.
I’ll give it a look, but every update to add more variety has been a letdown so far.
Edit: how is it 2020 and exocrafts still aren’t portable? Come on Hello Games. We all want it, and I know you know we all want it.
Glad I got a ps4 and bought No Man's Sky for it again. Have it on Fatbox one but it looks and plays better on ps4. Also the textures glitch on Xbox too.
Looks good, but every time I revisit this game I find the tiresome hunt for chemical elements with a limited inventory, coupled with having to complete story elements to unlock buildings, overshadows the impressive additions. Just not for me I think.
Seeing that huge Dune-esque sandworm in VR is going to be terrifying.
Gotta give them credit for taking it this far at no additional cost. Really a serious commitment.
@get2sammyb....... I seriously think Sony should have delayed the game for Ps5 and not pressure Hello games with releasing on the Ps4........ Each update is awesome but you spend an hour or 2 on it then you realize as a game its still lacks direction....... Make no mistake in terms of exploration, survival, inventory management and grinding no game comes close..... I think Hello games should hire a narrative developer to create a narrative or story for the game so there becomes a purpose tied to the game play................this game was released when it was far off from release.............
No Man's Sky is fantastic. I remember watching it blow up from the initial reveal, and I knew people were going to get mad because there's no way a dev team of under 20 could make the game people were expecting.
I jumped in around 2018 and it was already pretty good then, but what they've done over the last two years is just incredible.
@Bliquid Around 14-15GB.
Been with the game since Day 1 when it unlocked at midnight to play and its been an amazing ride, seeing it evolve has been exciting and its incredible its all 100% free with zero paid DLC or MTX. This update is the update the fanbase has been demanding and its added pretty most of the stuff we wanted, Sean and the staff visit the subreddit constantly and its shows.
I have a question about this game ?? Is it a MMO or it's just Offline exploration game ?? Does it have a Campaign ??
Firstly I’d like to express my amazement and admiration at what the team have added for free. I know they took stick early in but they have truly gone above and beyond.
However, I do wish I had waited to play this. I got it at launch and got the platinum snd haven’t really picked it up since apart from trying VR. The main reason is they haven’t added many more trophies. I know I’ll get criticised for this, but I enjoy the challenge of them so much I’d rather play another game with a fresh trophy list even if the moment to moment gameplay isn’t as good.
Please guys, add a load of trophies to go with your load of updates! Trophies give this game a focus it sorely lacks otherwise.
At this point, I think the developer has more than done enough to earn back the trust of anyone they burned when the game first launched. I've still never played this. Maybe it's time to give it a go...
THIS GAME NEVER QUITS! Time to start over...again. haha. Still one of the best VR experiences out there.
What this game needs is some AI helper bots which you can send off to collect all the stuff you need for jump fuel, to relieve some of the tedium and just let you explore. That's why I stopped playing; loved the rest of it, just got sick of that.
Yes, I'm aware there's an 'easy mode'; no, I don't want to enable that. It's just that with all that theoretical tech, you'd have something to do the menial work.
