PlayStation just had its best ever first quarter in terms of earnings, and it's no surprise to learn that the PlayStation Store played a gigantic role in setting the new record. Indeed, Sony's store is a colossus these days. Back in 2018, the PlayStation Network alone generated more revenue than the entirety of Nintendo's business, and two years later it continues to be a juggernaut.
We've known for some time that game sales are starting to skew more and more towards digital over physical, and Sony's latest stats reinforce this trend to a significant degree. A staggering 91 million PS4 games were sold during the first quarter of fiscal year 2020, and a huge 74 per cent of those sales were made through the PlayStation Store. That's a dramatic swing in favour of digital.
Of course, there are some external factors at play here. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has meant that a lot of people have stayed indoors, and so it's fair to assume that the PlayStation Store will have seen a boost in business. The store's frequent discount sales also have to be taken into account.
But still, the gap is only going to widen with time. Let's not forget that Sony's releasing two PS5 models later this year -- one of which doesn't have a disc drive. The Japanese giant knows that its digital storefront is arguably its greatest asset, and it's doubling down by offering a cheaper console that takes full advantage of the growing ecosystem.
Have you moved more and more towards digital this gen, or do you still prefer buying your games on disc? Watch the trends in the comments section below.

I am only digital for 3 years..............basically too lazy to swap disks.
However due to a wake up call Watch dogs legion, cyberpunk2077, and Planet Coaster will be physical copies as will the remaining Playstation 4 games I Purchase.
I prefer digital now, especially for sony 1st party exclusive games. But physical games are good too if I want to play some games but I want to sell it later.
I only buy digital games now, its more convenient, new releases can be ready to go when I wake up, its easy to swap between titles and physical games have lacked things like manuals for years making them less appealing anyway
I'm already 90% digital only, but if Sony introduces a digital return policy for games then I'll be 100% digital. Also my PS4 jet engine problem was worse with disks.
@Number09 What was the wake up call?
I'm not against digital downloads as long as I can own what I pay for, as I do when I buy digital games from gog.com - I own the installer file and I can back it up as often as I like. What I pay for is mine.
For one thing it would save space on my shelves. Saying that I'll still always get physical though if I have the choice.
But streaming doesn't appeal to me at all. In my mind games just aren't as disposable as TV shows and movies are.
I thought I’d never go digital but I did so in order to not have to by 2 copies of games seeing as how both my son and I are gamers. It’s really convenient not having to swap discs or having boxes laying around.
450+ games. Only 2 are physical. Both are VR...one for the Aim.
I love having games I love sit on the shelf. I still try to get physical copies when I can, but swapping games while sitting down is quite nice.
One thing that stinks tho, is I have to bring my entire PS4 to my buddys house when we play Overcooked.
Considering that half the games available these days are indie games that don't have a physical option, it's no surprise.
Most smaller games are digital.
The PS Store is almost always hosting some sort of sale.
The occasional PS+ discounts on already discounted sale items.
Yeah, I'm not surprised digital is such a big thing for them.
@Number09 i only do physical for big games that are 50gb as my internet connection is too slow to download them, would take weeks, but i am mainly digital now as the prices are getting really competitive compared the physical if your patient enough 😉
For PS4, most of my games are digital because reading the disc has been problematic recently with system updates. For Switch, it is physical as often as possible, unless it’s something ridiculous like part of the game is on the cartridge and the rest of it has to be downloaded...
They have all this success in the digital store yet its still awful to use and has been for the last 2 generations
@Shepherd_Tallon It's basically licensing and space issues the digital deals are good and they have inticed but physicals are calling.
This is the way things are going, large numbers of games now are digital only, but what doesn't help is when you release a new big game and don't have enough copies.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/07/ghost_of_tsushima_sells_out_in_japan_sony_promises_more_copies
This shows that for big releases, physical is very much still alive.
@huyi my 1TB Hard drive is full I also have another 1TB removeable full and a 4TB thats on the brink of filling up your right if your patient enough you can get deals I have every game I have ever wanted through the P.S Store.......I need physical not another Hard drive.
Oh God :-/ Then we will all be tied to their(and Microsofts) rules and gaming will be dead for me I like disc games because I can get them cheap and swap them with friends etc etc and of course these big companies just hate that(especially Microsoft) Oh well time to learn Fishing or another hobby I guess
When I bought a PS4, my plan was to go only digital. Long story short, now I own about 150 physical PS4 games...
I've been mostly digital since late PS3 generation. I just cannot justify having to store or get rid of physical games. This isn't the 90s.
Further, there have been plenty of times when I go back to games I haven't played in 4 years (looking at you, Witcher 3 and Fallout 4). That is easy to do when I just need to queue a download.
@Number09 you do know physical takes up just as much space as digital right? I have 1TB left out of my 8TB worth of hdd and am not going back to physical. The only difference now between digital and physical is that with physical you have the physical license (the disc itself) and you can resell it. But the game just installs to your hdd when you have the disc.
I've been digital since PS3. I have like 2 physical games, but the rest I have (300+) installed on my PS4 are digital. There's one game I getting physical this year but only because I'm getting the collector's edition. I'll probably get digital version as well.
I have over 150+ physical games for both PS3 and PS4 (around 75 games for each, maybe a bit more) but, I will be transitioning to all digital when I eventually get the PS5.
I do still prefer physical games but my main reasoning to go all digital is for the health of the developers, as a while back I read an article about how healthy Capcom business is at the moment and they themselves credited digital sales for that.
I think they get a bigger cut of a game sale is it is sold digitally over physically if I am correct.
Digital is the future. I've been digital since 2016 when i got my PS4 with only a few physical. Digital is easier and more convenient.
I buy bargain priced digital games quite often, but I've never bought a full price one, they are always physical.
The uncertain life of older consoles online systems is my main concern. I'm watching what Sony do with the PS3 and vita libraries with interest.
Nintendo are awful for it, no wonder so many want physical for them. They seem keen to shut down older consoles as soon as possible.
There's also the possibility of losing your entire library if you get banned. While I'm not one for playing up online, I still think that is very dubious. Losing online access, fair enough, but being stripped of your entire library is very questionable to me.
Pretty much 100% physical disks for new games here. I still find the PS Store about £10 more than buying the physical disk online, plus you can usually sell it for around £20 depending on the game.
It's a no brainer for me.
I mainly buy physical, I like to have the option to sell my games if I don’t like them or if I don’t play anymore I can sell them and put the money towards the next game I want. I do buy digital if there’s a good sale on but I wouldn’t like to be locked into just the PS store tbh...
@MrDoug91 There is a returns policy for PSN purchased games, I got a refund on the Predator game because it was broken for me. But you obviously can only get refunds on games that are broken, they're not gonna give you money back just because you don't end up liking the game.
@l-_l- im leaving 150 GB space only for disks disk in play wipe next disc load play wipe and so on.
Bought physical Ghost of Tsushima for £48.
Finished it and sold it for £42.
When will digital version be £6?
Then I'll go full digital.
I like both. Digital for the indies, and those fantastic sales, and convenience. Physical for games I know I'll treasure, collectors edition, and knowing I can resell or trade if I want too. Sony first party and rpgs/jrpgs I go solely physical (unless there is a unmissable sale).
When I first bought my PS4 it was mostly physical, but I shifted to entirely digital. I also don't buy as many games as I used to, and a majority of them I wait until they are cheap. Makes me care less about a physical disc.
Whilst its not the greatest surprise, my concern remains that the vast majority of psn sales this year have tended to over rely on mostly the same AAA titles being recycled every other month. Had well over 12-16 indies wishlisted that have been out since 2019 (or 2018 in Timespinners case), & never had a single sale since release...& then other older indies that haven't had a psn sale in a couple of years!
Rather frustrating when they get sales on other consoles/steam etc.
Ive gone fully digital, with only a few exceptions. I bought a 4 tb seagate external hard drive, so now i can download however many games ive purchased through the years.
@Kidfried Honestly, it could eventually get to that point. The UK charts are already based on pretty low numbers across the board — anything outside of the top five is usually selling next to nothing in the grand scheme of things.
The bottom line is that these sales trackers need to start incorporating digital sales as quickly as possible. Easier said than done, apparently.
Still physical as much as possible. I just don’t trust any platform holder (other than maybe Steam on PC) to still maintain my purchases playable 3 “console generations” into the future.
I could be convinced to start going digital at the start of not the next, but the following gen, based on whom shows me how far they willing to go to protect my digital collection investment.
I’ll anyways buy a console with a disk drive, even in such a scenario, though. I don’t plan to re-buy all of that in digital form.
New released digital games are always at least a tenner dearer than the physical editions so I'll always go retail on those games I want. I've no problem snapping up a bargain from the PS store though.
I don’t buy new games digital but I do pick up bargains in the sales. Any game I want when it comes out is physical. Because of both price and because I want to own it.
Digital for games in pc I have no choice but for console I go physical because I'm not starting to keep a collection of PS3 and 4 games on disc. But I do see a great sale I get it digital if I can I mean when it's really really cheap
@Kidfried Well, they need to update the way they report their charts I guess.
@Octane Limited Run Games is your friend. Or signatureeditiongame/iam8bit/fangamer. The only thing i own digital are expansions and the indies that i bought before i found out about these stores.
@ShogunRok Maybe start telling what is digital only too keep a honest picture.
I am willing to buy digital games if they offer me prices similar to Steam.
@I_Like_It not really the case and this is a age old argument.
In my example, borderlands 3 super deluxe is £80+ (max a eye watering £110, hah!) on Amazon but it recently went on sale for £45 on the store, you can guess which version I brought from just that, there is no way I was going to pay £110 just to have the convenience of physical, I'm certainly not that stupid to do that. 🤣🤣🤣
