It was teased alongside the announcement of the PlayStation 4 itself, but Media Molecule’s finally delivered on its ambitious vision for Dreams – and it’s a masterpiece, as far as we’re concerned. But don’t listen to just us: the title currently commands an impressive 92 rating on Metacritic, making it one of the highest rated PS4 titles of all-time.
At the time of typing, there have only been 12 verdicts, so it’s possible said average could increase – or, indeed, decrease. Nevertheless, it’s becoming abundantly obvious that the Guilford-based team has delivered a stunner here – it’s the 10th highest rated PS4 game of all time according to Metacritic, with only Hall of Famers like Bloodborne and God of War above it.
The game’s out now, and you know what you need to do.

Really hope they start heavily marketing it - but probably won't. Still the fan base and word of mouth should help it grow. This can last the next decade with endless fan created games. Can't wait for PSVR support too! Downloading and jumping in as soon as I get off of work.
@GamingFan4Lyf That's a pretty low quality take to be honest, man.
It's really amazing but I have a small problem with it... my game keeps saying that I'm offline, while I'm clearly Online.
I don't know if it's just me or not...
nevertheless, it's an amazing work of art.
@get2sammyb How is it a low quality take? Dreams is a game engine with a console-friendly UI. It's brilliant, but one has to expect that the really highly polished experiences are going to get buried in...questionable content - whether it be from someone simply learning the ropes, or people purposefully trolling the community.
The only difference is that games can't be sold in Dreams, so someone can't make a quick buck off garbage.
This game is my V-Day gift via my wife via a PS Store gift card. CAN’T WAIT!
Deservedly so. Now that the full release is out, I may finally give the creation tools a thorough try.
@GamingFan4Lyf Why do you think that? Have you played the game? I can tell you that it's actually very good at bringing the quality stuff to the top.
Surely "of all time" doesn't need to be in the headline? You're only referring to PS4 games which already limits it to a few years.
I'm glad its reviewed well, I'd love to have a go but doubt is have the time it clearly needs
@get2sammyb Nope, haven't played the "game". I wish I had that kind of time, though, because I do like to create things. It's good to know that it does a good job keeping the quality stuff to the top, though.
My comments are bred from the complete lack of faith in user-generated experiences of the past. Mainly Unity Engine and UE4 crap on PC and many many many uninspired levels in Super Mario Maker crowding out quality level-design (yes, Dreams is way more capable than Super Mario Maker, but the mentality is similar).
Again, I am not knocking Dreams, but I don't see it as a game as much as I see it is an open game engine with the potential to breed questionable content.
@GamingFan4Lyf Sorry, don't want to start a comments war here, but... I do think the vision and execution of MediaMolecule with Dreams is somethings that's on another league, I reckon it's hard to judge from a conventional point of view.
Well done to Media Molecule. They do need to start promoting this tho. The ones ive seen have been using and crediting user creations which is brilliant
@MattSilverado Perhaps.
Maybe the fact that I am a software developer and have played around with various game development engines that, when I see Dreams, all I see is an SDK. I am not a game developer by trade, though.
What I find brilliant is that it appears to bring that kind of power to something that feels familiar to people who aren't game designers. So in that, I do applaud MediaMolecule's vision with Dreams.
Plus, it probably is a great avenue for up-and-coming game developers to use it as a test-bed without having to become a Sony-approved developer: test an idea, gauge success, learn a few things in the process, etc.
Again, I have absolutely nothing against Dreams at all. It's a brilliant concept in the console space. It has great potential with what seems to be top-notch execution.
The biggest drawback is that it will live-or-die by it's community and the way creations are given focus. I hope there is a "Report" capability that actually works.
The user rating also being extremely high is rare to see.
@GamingFan4Lyf I'm also a software developer but nothing game related, that's why maybe I'm more amazed by the concept/execution. As you say, the greatest drawback it's also it's biggest win, letting all in the hands of the "creator". I hope the best for MM and the community using Dreams.
@GamingFan4Lyf
Its more than just a 'bunch of amateur games' , its a positive community free of toxic negativity from people like you. Have fun spending Christmas alone as usual, while posting negative comments about games you will never play. Dreams has nothing to prove to you, but maybe you can prove to us that you are decent human being.
@GamingFan4Lyf
You sound like an amateur Simon Cowell criticizing artwork in a kindergarten classroom. Lets see some of your work if you're such a creative genius about what is a good and bad game. I guess a boy who can't even spell the word "Life" is an expert at life.
@jess3a3 ::Sigh:: I'll bite.
Married? Check
Child? Check
Successful career? Check
Calling this game for what it is: an SDK? Check
Worried that an absolutely amazing product will get polluted with jump-scare game #999999999, penis jokes, divisive political jabs, memes, and copycat games, because...internet? Check
Criticized Dreams as a concept in any way, shape, or form? Nope
I think it's a great product. I don't want it to fail. If I had more time in my day to sit and create...something, I would absolutely invest in Dreams. But I also fear that Pandora's Box has been opened and I really hope that the community doesn't turn sour and is properly regulated - unlike other places where community-created stuff is allowed.
I am sure there will people who create the greatest stuff on there. I just hope it doesn't get lost in "typical internet". I would never criticize a user for actually trying!
@GamingFan4Lyf well u did spell life wrong! 😂
@ellsworth004 Yeah, well...we can't all know how to spell big words. LOL
@GamingFan4Lyf i always find it interesting how people will attack others on a personal level over a opinion on video games. I think dreams is great, but i can see ur concerns. Ive wondered same thing about explicit material.
@ellsworth004 Admittedly, I probably should smooth over my initial comment. It does imply that Dreams doesn't deserve the high scores it is getting - wasn't my intent.
Since other comments have been made regarding the initial comment, I won't change it for contextual purposes. It would make other people's replies to it seem off.
@jess3a3 "Simon Cowell criticizing artwork in a kindergarten classroom"
I would watch that show
@GamingFan4Lyf
Maybe dreams isn't for you, but don't insult and disrespect the hundreds of talented people who created dreams and create beautiful artwork using dreams. Also try dreams before assuming it is as bad as everything you have seen in the past. It's bad form to review things you have never even tried. "Art's dream" by media molecule is a 2 hour work of genius. I would never tell a child their artwork is crap just because it is not as good as the most expensive painting ever sold. Dreams is just a creative tool, and the more creative tools the better especially cheaper $40 creative tools.
@jess3a3 Please read my Comment #23.
I never once was disrespectful to the people who made it. In fact, other than addressing my concerns about potential abuse from the community, I was very complimentary of the work of the developers. It's something that has never existed on consoles before. Also, it seems to be done in such a way non-developers can work with fairly easily.
Last time I checked, words like "amazing product" (Comment #19), "interesting" (Comment #2), "I don't want it to fail" (Comment #19), "brilliant concept in the console space" (Comment #14), and "great avenue for up-and-coming game developers" (Comment #14) aren't disrespectful towards the product at all. I think they are very complimentary.
@GamingFan4Lyf I completely understand your concern... But I think the difference from Dreams to other open platforms is: first an excellent promotion of good creations in Dreamsurfing, and second, a very positive, cooperative and helpful community. Seriously, I've never seen a community like this in any other platform in the internet.
"jump-scare game #999999999, penis jokes, divisive political jabs, memes, and copycat games"
In 1 year of early access, I've never seen any of these in Dreams, or if so, very rarely, so can't even remember. Sure, it isn't all masterpieces, but you can see everyone is improving their quality step by step on each creation.
It is really amazing how someone with little to no background to programming or game engines can make their first games in just a few hours of learning, and also being able to count on an awesome community to improve.
I really believe this could be a gateway for people who always dreamed (pun intended) to be a game developer but always found too hard.
Get back to me when it reaches 90 plus reviews, this is just silly.
In saying that, I think dreams is brilliant and I can't wait to start creating my ideas with it today.
@GamingFan4Lyf It's like saying Lego is pointless because even before Lego we could cut wood up into little blocks then glue it together. It's not the low level concept of connecting blocks but the ease of use, infrastructure and naturally tutorialised nature (e.g. pre configured Lego sets) that make them stand apart.
Or from a purely gaming perspective, it's like dismissing Baldur's Gate and Final Fantasy because DnD already exists.
I love MM but wasn't going to get this but might get it now + Now MM do another LBP game PLEASE (they won't tho)
It's just crazy that this game will only get better with time. I'll admit, it's a little underwhelming for someone who doesn't like to create right now. Lots of "demo" and "WIP", but so much promise.
@grahamd It is such an act of courage to look at a developers 7 years of hard work on a game you have never even played, and dismiss it with "Nothing New". You are a creative genius. Can I see what games you have developed?
@grahamd so youtube was nothing new when it came out 15 years ago? How many hours have you played dreams? Try it before you dismiss it.
Metacritic... lol. Some man-children will most likely review-bomb it so who cares?
@grahamd if you are a professional game developer Dreams is not your main SDK, but this is a big deal for amateurs and young people. It simplifies game development the same way legos made building things simpler, or that youtube made creating videos simpler. You may write it off as nothing special but I and most of the reviews on metacritic see this as revolutionary. Does unreal engine have a social network that connects all the creations? Are you an active member of the dreams community? it is the best community in gaming IMO. that makes it special.
