PS5 PlayStation 5 Sony 1

The humble PlayStation 5 logo, nestled on a plain black background, has become the most liked Instagram image ever uploaded by a gaming company – in 48 hours. Clearly the reveal at CES 2020 resonated with the wider public, but it has attracted some ridicule for its similarity to the PlayStation 4’s logo.

Speaking with Business Insider Japan, as translated by Gematsu, newly minted PlayStation boss Jim Ryan explained the reasoning behind the design: “It is important to give off a sense of consistency for products within the PlayStation brand,” he said. “It is a must for anyone who sees [the logo] to immediately and positively think, ‘That’s PlayStation’.”

Ryan also suggested that, as PS4 will remain relevant long after the PS5’s release, it’s important for all players to feel like they’re a part of the same community – irrespective of which system they’re playing on. “There are over 100 million PlayStation 4 owners – there is a community there,” he added. “We have an obligation to keep them happy, interested, and absorbed [in PlayStation].”
