As the year 2025 draws to a close, it's time to reflect on the last 12 months — but more importantly, it's time to see who did the best (and the worst) in our predictions from January.
It's tradition around here for the editorial team to come up with a bunch of predictions for the year, and because we're all gamers at heart, we can't help but make it slightly competitive. Who's aced it with their crystal ball musings, and who's got to sit in the corner and think about where things went wrong?
Let's take a look at how we all got on.

"Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet gameplay is revealed, plus a 2026 release window"
Given Sony's recent announcement-to-release cadence, we can forgive Aaron for assuming we'd see more of Intergalactic in 2025, but it was not to be. This Naughty Dog game appears to be a little further out than he thought, and with PS Studios already lining up at least three titles in 2026, Intergalactic seems likely to follow in 2027.
"PS Portal will get an OLED version"
A straightforward one, this — it's a negative. Sorry, Aaron.
In fairness, the PS Portal has had a fair amount of love from Sony this year, including significant functionality updates and some alternate colours to choose from. Unfortunately, though, an OLED model did not emerge.
"Opinion on the PS5 Pro will shift as more games benefit from it"
This one's a little tougher, as it depends on who you ask and what games they've played. We would argue, however, that the broad, general view of PS5 Pro is more negative than positive. Aaron's prediction was that opinion will become more positive over time, but with several misfires on high profile releases with regards to Pro support, it sadly means he loses another point with this one.

"PlayStation enters an unprecedented new golden age"
This is a tough one to assess, but the spirit of the prediction is that PS5 will sell even better on the strength of its library and the multiplatform-ification of Xbox's games. On those grounds, well, it's still hard to say precisely how accurate this is, but PS5 did have a great 2025 backed by some excellent first-party titles, so let's throw Khayl half a point.
"Judas is released in Q1 2025, and it's the true successor to BioShock"
Ouch — not quite, Khayl! There's still no sign of Judas, the next game from Ken Levine and his team at Ghost Story Games. While we're all pretty excited to see what's next from the makers of BioShock, it's destined to be a 2026 game at the earliest, and the jury's out on whether it can match that legendary series.
"Sid Meier's Civilization VII is a breakout success for the series"
Unfortunately for history and strategy buff Khayl, this hasn't really come to pass. While the game reviewed pretty strongly, it had a very mixed reception from fans, with many lamenting its design deviations and other issues. Sales-wise, we don't know the full picture, but 2K boss suggested it had a slow start. It seems this wasn't quite the breakout success Khayl was hoping for.

"Resident Evil 9 is announced for a 2026 launch"
Liam's hit the nail on the head with his first prediction. Resident Evil Requiem was indeed announced in 2025, and is scheduled for launch on 27th February, 2026. Predictions don't really come much cleaner than that!
"Death Stranding 2: On the Beach earns the highest Metacritic rating of any PS5 game released this year"
This prediction came fairly close to coming true, but unfortunately for DS2, 2025 had a huge number of stellar games release. Some of them, like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Split Fiction ended up with a higher Metascore than Kojima Productions' sequel, great as it is.
"Hollow Knight: Silksong releases"
A very simple prediction that's paid off for Liam. This could've easily gone either way, but yes, Silksong really did finally launch in 2025, and it was a real moment late in the summer. So in demand was the game that it broke basically every digital storefront it launched on for an hour or two.

"Starfield comes to PS5 as some kind of complete edition later in the year"
Sadly, this didn't come true in 2025. While Microsoft has brought many of its first-party games to PS5 during the year, Starfield has yet to join them. We expect this will happen sooner or later, but it seems Rob was a little quick on the draw here.
"Jin Sakai will be playable in Ghost of Yotei (through a flashback sequence)"
Rob's fan fiction about Jin Sakai didn't come to pass — it seems Ghost of Yotei doesn't feature Jin Sakai as a playable character at all. It would've been cool, but no dice.
Interestingly, Rob made a small, additional prediction relating to the Sakai family katana, and that did turn out to be true, so we'll give him a half point. Why not? It's the holidays.
"The Final Fantasy 9 remake is revealed, built on Unreal Engine"
It's a big fat no for Rob's final prediction, unfortunately. We're seemingly no closer to a Final Fantasy 9 remake. There's been a little bit of chatter about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, and we did get Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles at last, but Zidane's grand adventure has yet to reemerge.

"Sony will announce a game playable on PS5, PC, and mobile"
This feels like a prediction that should've come true, but surprisingly it didn't. Sony has actually announced several mobile games in 2025, but no games that are playable across PS5, PC, and mobile. This feels like an inevitability, but it didn't emerge over the last year, so we have to chalk this one up as a miss.
"GTA 6 will have a modular multiplayer map allowing Rockstar to change parts of the city"
Unfortunately, we know about as much about GTA 6 now as we did when Sammy wrote his predictions, so this is another no-pointer. He's onto something with this modular map talk, though; it makes perfect sense given the game will likely have some hefty live service features. Unfortunately, there's still about a year to go until the game is in our hands, and that's if it isn't delayed again. Here's hoping.
"Microsoft becomes the biggest publisher on PS5 by far"
This has broadly turned out to be true. With Xbox pushing its games to other platforms more and more, and considering the sheer scope of what Microsoft's games publishing business looks like these days, many of the best-selling PS5 games of 2025 have come from the company. It's a scenario that would've felt ridiculous five years ago, but Sony's biggest competitor has become one of its key software partners.

"We'll spy our first glimpse of Project 007 this year"
Ding ding ding! We did indeed get our first glimpse at the game, which turned out to be named 007 First Light. In fact, we've seen a good chunk of it; as well as the initial trailer, there was a State of Play all about it, and the stealth action game has been popping up at different showcases throughout 2025.
"Team Asobi isn't quite done with Astro Bot just yet"
Stephen's eagle-eyed observations about Astro Bot were worth the effort, as this prediction turned out true too. The game would go on to receive many additional DLC levels for free throughout the year, and with those came new Special Bots, even including the ones Stephen mentions. It seems that Team Asobi is finally finished with Astro Bot at this point, but the team really came through for this prediction.
"EA will announce an arcade racing game, and it's either a Burnout revival or a Need for Speed remaster"
Unfortunately, this one didn't land. EA didn't announce a new Burnout, Need for Speed, or any arcade racing game for that matter. It was good research from Stephen, but the publisher's let him down. Maybe there is an arcade racer in the works at EA, but none were made public in 2025.

So, this year we have a tie — it's Liam and Stephen with two points each! Congratulations on your great predicting prowess. Have a mince pie and some Quality Street to celebrate.
Watch out, because in the new year, we'll be making some fresh predictions about 2026. Keep your eyes peeled for that in the coming days. For now, have your say on our great guesses and fumbled failures in the comments section below.

The only title I'm really chomping at the bit for is assetto corsa rally. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of great games that I'll probably enjoy but it's that one title I want right now.
All I going to say Rob for the FFIX prediction is:

Don't worry me and @Czar_Khastik were right there with you
@SeaDaVie
I don't know whether I would class it as a 'golden age' - I would like to have seen just a few more 1st party exclusives having launched in the last 2 years to call it that.
However, on balance, I would say that this has been the best Playstation generation yet, so maybe that does imply a 'golden age'.
As far as I am concerned there have been a number of amazing 1st Party exclusives, backed up by some amazing 3rd party games.
The move to 60fps is the best thing to happen in consoles in many years.
From a hardware point of view, I think base PS5 was good, but I really think the Pro has been a major success this generation, and a significantly bigger jump than last gen - even if a few 3rd party devs have shown a lack of capability with it.
I also think the controller is Sony's best yet.
From Sony's point of view, I suppose with Xbox having fallen so quickly/hard, they might consider it a 'golden age'. Though I don't think they deserve all the credit here - some of it, yes, but Xbox / MS deserve some too...
Civilization VII is in the Platinum category for highest sellers on Steam this year:
https://store.steampowered.com/charts/bestofyear/2025
Not sure that would define it as a breakout hit but it did sell some copies at least.
@SeaDaVie I genuinely find that very hard to believe tbh.
Now that 2025 is about wrapped, I hope 2026 is a better year for gaming than 2025 was. There were a decent amount of solid games, but ultimately I feel like there was this malaise on gaming culture the past year that was unshakeable. It practically felt like every game was divisive this year and reading year end lists (not necessarily speaking about Pushsquare) that sort of sound like, “Well, I guess E33 is GotY… What else could win?” feels sort of sad. I don’t mean that as a knock on E33. I know I’ve knocked the game enough this year and I’m sort of done with that. I just hope next year feels more positive for culture overall, sort of like how 2023 was.
@somnambulance it was a very niche year. Some people got served very well, but I don't think it was the kind of year where Game of the Year lists struggled for choice for #1
In my opinion, PS5 Pro is popular among its users, and it seems to attract a lot of attention from people that compare it to 2000$ machines.
If the metric of success is that it sells better than base PS5 I don't think you understand the market or the state of the world.
Maybe it'll be 2026 that PushSquare recognizes the PS5 Pro, but please SIGNAL IN ADVANCE what the criteria is.
@Perturbator that’s only in the new release section. If you switch over to all games (which is done by revenue since a lot of f2p stuff shows up) it drops down to Silver and it doesn’t even show up in the most played tab (but civ 6 does). Speaking anecdotally I bought 7 at launch and bounced off almost immediately. I put by an order of magnitude more time into Civ 5/6.
I’m also one of the weirdos who doesn’t mind base civ without the expansions since I was perfectly content to put a few hundred hours into 4 and 5 on release with no expansions even if both games were massively improved by their respective ones. I hope they can turn it around but I had such a jarring reaction to the age change system that I think they will need to remove that to get me back in and it’s fundamental to the game. If not this is probably going to rival 3 as my least played entry, no shade on 3 btw I was just really happy with 2 and kept on playing that until 4 came out.
FFIX Remake hurts. It's like the only game from that Nvidia leak that hasn't come to light in some form. I really hope there's still something being planned there...
@Oram77 I'll never forgive Square Enix for this.
@LifeGirl @SeaDaVie While I definitely disagree about golden age, I do think people will see PS5 in a more positive light in 20 years but because of what Sony does with PS7/PS8. Kind of like how the lack of 1st party games in the PS5 era has made people think a lot more positively about the PS3 because of its very strong 1st party lineup.
@Northern_munkey damn! Is this coming to PS5 then?? If so I’m 100% getting it! Love me a rally game
@SeaDaVie Really depends what you mean by "Golden Age." I read that as, 'PlayStation's greatest run of all time.' Which I don't think is true at any metric (PS2 was more successful, PS2 and PS3 had better 1st-party support, PSone was more influential and innovative).
I think a lot of people misunderstand when fans criticize this generation. I like the PS5. There's plenty to play on it, and it's pretty decent hardware. But Sony has made undeniable missteps. They can do a lot better than they are, and I really wish they were.
@ThomasHL I think it’s debatable that it’s easy to pick a GotY this year. I know a lot of people love E33, but even that game’s divisive and I imagine it will become more and more divisive as time marches on and that’s because it’s a niche game just like the next couple games I’ll list. Games like Split Fiction and KCD2 got buried for releasing so early in the year. Bananza, Hades 2, and DS2 were largely overlooked for what they are. DS2 is my pick, but it’s also a weird game, so I see why it was overlooked. I feel like Bananza being as overlooked and discounted is sort of strange. And Silksong crashed the internet only to disappear from the conversation completely. If Silksong would’ve had sliders for difficulty adjustment, I’d imagine that one would’ve been discussed longer term and potentially would’ve been the competition E33 should’ve had. It did sell better than E33, after all, but that’s oddly been left out of the gaming narrative this year.
When exchanging top 10 lists with friends, this is the only year I’ve ever seen where it seems like everyone’s list is a completely different set of 10 games with such little overlap. Very strange year.
@GamingGod indeed it is..the devs have already confirmed the console versions are already underway.
I just bought a PS5 (pressed "buy" for the Ghost of Yotei bundle even before I was halfway through Ghost of Tsushima on my PC) so I really can't comment on how this year was for the console.
For gaming overall, IMO we're going to look back on this year as an extremely important year. Sony continued to move toward manufacturing even more gaming hardware with the announcement of a 27" gaming monitor with controller charging capability. Microsoft got into the handheld market, and seemingly decided on a confused halfway in/halfway out mess of a "strategy" for the XBox console, and Valve announced it's getting into the console space with the Steam Machine.
Regardless of whether you play on console, PC or handheld, gaming got more expensive this year too. With the RAM apocalypse growing instead of getting better, we might look back on the price hikes we saw this year as "quaint." It's already reportedly caused Sony to think more about the announcement/release date for the PS6. Whatever console Microsoft insists it's going to release will probably also get delayed. Both consoles will also probably release at higher prices because of the tarrifs and the RAM apocalypse that began this year.
If the price hikes dramatically reduce the purchase of new gaming laptops & desktops in 2026, I wonder if developers will rethink their graphic design strategies to make sure they don't outpace gamers ability to upgrade to play new games on the highest settings.
Lastly, 2025 might just have been the first dent in COD's "armor." The Black Ops 7 release quickly caused Activision/Microsoft to go into damage control mode and announce BO and MW won't ever have b2b releases again. Maybe it's just me, but I think the problem's bigger than that. With BO7's endgame mode, it seems to me like they're moving away from the traditional single player experience to more live service multiplayer like Warzone, and a large number of gamers don't want that. If 2026's game releases to a similar response, Activison's got a major problem.
The only things that seemed to remain consistent this year are Fortnite and Nintendo. Fortnite continued to dominate in a way nohody's been able to replicate, and Nintendo kept doing what they do with the Switch 2.
I predict I'll be in a time crunch in February!! There's the releases of DQVII Reimagined & Disciples II: Dark Prophecy plus the Winter Olympics!! Glad I'm retired or I'd never have enough time!! ⏳
@Jammer I feel like they are going to lay heavy in some of the unannounced games like whatever Naughty Dog's 2nd game is , Corey's new game , and the rumor that a new Horizon game has been developed for a few years already.
