Here’s the concern for Sony: the PlayStation 4 has proven incredibly successful, but a new generation beckons. Naturally, the Japanese giant doesn’t want to leave behind the community of over 100 million players that it’s established, so it needs to convert them to the PlayStation 5 faster than it’s ever done in the past. It’s a problem that new CEO Jim Ryan has been tasked with solving.
“When we look at this transition and the ambition to do things at a scale and pace that we haven't seen, we have to look at ourselves and make certain changes,” he explained. “Some of which are in the ways we work, and some in the way we organise.” This has led to alterations in the organisation’s overall structure, which has prompted it to globalise its decision making.
Outside of the business stuff, though, we reckon you’re going to see some neat incentives for PS4 players upgrading to the PS5. For example, we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an upgrade path for service-based software like Rainbow Six: Siege, where existing owners can pay a small fee to grab a hypothetical next-gen version of the game. All will be revealed soon, as Ryan says there’s lots more to share.

Knack 3 PS5 exclusive launch game.
I'm upgrading on launch day, so what can I get? 😁
FFXIV did this from the PS3 to PS4. Wish more games did it as well.
All they'd have to do to get me instantly over to the PS5 is have Dark Cloud 3 as a launch title.
I’ll get one launch day and keep the PS4 for a while thanks... will tell the Mrs it’s a new video recorder
I've always been a slow adopter of new consoles. They'd need to make it very cheap to exchange a PS4 for a PS5 if they want me to have a PS5 at launch.
I'll be upgrading a few months after launch to make sure that there are no glaring hardware issues the would need to be addressed.
Also, I don't think charging for an upgrade is really going to be a smart option given that it will be backwards compatible. Honestly, simply having the ability for people trade-in their current system towards a PS5 is a great incentive thanks to backwards compatibility.
I think a much BIGGER incentive will be that, if you own the PS4 game and put it into a PS5, you can download the PS5 version (with your disc acting as the authorization) for free. Basically how Sony handled the PS3 to PS4 transition titles, only without the $10 charge.
Another cool incentive would be to have some kind of boost mode for PS4 games to take advantage of beefier hardware - or at least having instant loading.
PS1 games got a "boost" on PS2 for free. PS1 and PS2 games got a "boost" on PS3 (and then took it away completely) for free. PS4 charged you to get a boost on select PS3 games. Let's go back to the basics and have PS5 have a "boost" to PS4 games for free!
The way I see it, this should be handled like PC. If I upgrade my PC hardware, I don't have to buy a new game I already own to get access to better visual settings.
Now, I know PC is a different beast, but if the PS5 can handle PS4 titles, why not allow us to take advantage more advanced visual settings of our current library without charging us?!
A day one stability patch and I'm sold.
@thefirst I'm always serious when it comes to Knack.
I usually wait a year to avoid teething issues with launch models (and usually a bigger hdd). If anything i will be slower next gen. Not only do i have a huge back log, but i am also going from a position this gen where i was in a relationship but with no wider commitments, to now being married with a second child on the way and a mortgage. I have neither the time or disposable income to be a day 1 adopter any more
The new launch titles will make my decision to get it day one or not. Something has got to really wow me. That and I'd really love for the them to bring back the PS2 initiative since their talking about embracing the past. I'd stay on PS Now forever if they were to add PS2/PSX games each month with trophy support.
The did just that with the PS3 > PS4 Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty....
If my current PS4 library comes with me, day one purchase. If not, I'll sit on my PS4 Pro for awhile. Maybe until the first revision.
@Spoonman-2 You... I like you.
I'm getting a PS5 day one anyway so i don't need any incentive and as it's supposed to be Backwards Compatible i can take all my PS4 games with me anyway
It's going to come down to price, Sony. At £499 it will be seen as respectable value but not everyone will be able to afford to upgrade. At £399 it will be seen as stupendous value and people will sell their left kidneys.
@stuzster. Same as myself i would probably wait 2 or 3 years.i got to much ps4 games already.my backlog is huge. And im still buying ps4 games.word up son
FF7R part 2 near launch would help with pace.
Or God of War. Whatever they are going to call it, it's part 2.
I'll probably pick it up Day 1, I still have my Day 1 PS3 and PS4; the only reason my PS2 isn't included is I wore out the drive playing Monster Rancher 2 and loading my CD collection to see what they generated.
make online gaming free as it was and make sure the ps5 have backward compatibility with the ps4 and ps3. then it will happen sony.
Probably that ps5 is backwards compatible with all previous consoles.
And for the hardcore playstation supporters to jump in and be able to play all (digital bought) ps1/2/3/ games from day 1.
Guess i wont tell them that im ready to preorder and buy day 1 already lol
Free updates to some PS4 games would be nice. Even if it's just the Sony exclusives. Days Gone, Spiderman, God of War, Death Stranding.....all with free updates to include ray tracing and all the other new benefits of the PS5.
Yeah make free all the dlc on all of my ps4 games. Then I might. But I have a giant backlog and wont need a ps5 yet. Maybe not ever for the price it will cost.
Give me a PS5 that plays all my PS3 and PS4 game discs in addition to new PS5 titles and you'll have me.
Right now there is very little confirmed for PS5 that interests me. But being able to box up both my PS3 and PS4 and have the ability to play future PS5 titles all one machine? Then you'll win me over.
There's a bit he says I really like and I dont see it in the articles.
'he's personally focused on the games "that will make or break PlayStation 5, just as they do every platform."
For me it's all about backwards compatibility. If I can play all the old's games I have in my ps+ que and some other digital games I own then I can sell my ps4 with the physical copy games I don't play anymore and save maybe between 30-40% on the price of the ps5.
I normally don't get new consoles for 2-3 years but if I can do that I'm in from the beginning if the new games/upgraded games are good.
The way the word free is tossed around here, I am surprised no one said "give me the PS5 free then I will upgrade day one".
The PS5 already has incentives for PS4 games. It should have a boost mode that is above Boost on PS4 Pro. SSD will take a big chunk out of load times. This is the Christmas you need to upgrade your TV to 4K if you haven't done so. That is a amazing upgrade. If your on a budget, buy a TCL 43" 4K HDR TV, I got mine 2 years ago for $259.
As long as there are exciting games there, then I'll be in day one. Or if Ghost of Tsushima looks the most pretty on that. Or a special Ghost of Tsushima edition of the console.
Make it backwards compatible from PS1 - PS4 and I'll be there day one, and stop this puritanical censorship nonsense. Let the developers choose what they want in their games, and it'll be rated accordingly. We don't need Sony to censor stuff for us, especially when Nintendo isn't.
@Spoonman-2 haha I reckon I could swap the PS5 for the PS4 and the Mrs wouldn’t even notice!
The Last of Us Part II Remastered is how I'll convince my wife.
@Rob_230 @m1349 I would rather say congratulations! With marriage and family life.
I have a family myself and have been in the same situation back in the day. Now however, my son has turned 9 and we are having a blast playing on the PS4 together.
But yeah, I'll probably also wait a few month after launch before getting the 5, just to let things smooth out a little
@Rob_230 couldn't agree more also the fact the ps4 pro does play native 4k and upscaling. I don't see having a few seconds time gap also for games loading is worth the extra 500 pounds. I have full 4k 10+ with the pro and its stunning compared to my base ps4 in my bedroom. And also the fact that homes still only have standard bluray and also again the fact that Sony have all admitted that not every game will be in full 4k either for the ps5. It's only a ssd and some Ray tracing with faster speeds that's all we are gonna get. So im happy with the pro for now. Seen as it's only really bn on the go since 2017. I can't see Sony taking 100 million ps5 owners in the same time as the ps4 did. Because that meens 100 million people need to buy a 4k TV also. But the ps4 has bn a great console regardless and will continue to be one of the best consoles out there ever. But I will wait a year also due to the having a huge catalogue of games to play. Sony also has makes things worse buy selling games like nioh tlou batman which all of us had already, yet we pay for psn yet the ones who have stood buy Sony and bought all exclusives should be entilted to a game that they don't already own. Nothing worse waiting for the new psn games coming to find out u own them or don't want the second game at all as it will never get played. Sony really need to show us abit more of what the ps5 can trully do. Rather than hearsay.
Good luck with that. For me, there are too many reasons NOT to upgrade any time soon.
No thanks. I will wait a year or two till a suped up version like the Pro is released. Not an early adopter.
A good trade in price for my Ps4 Pro would be a good start
First gen of PS5 will prolly have minor hiccups. I'm tempted to wait until the 2nd gen arrives. However, depending on what features the PS5 has, I may be a day one adopter!
Backward compatibility with PS2 would make it very tough to wait with upgrading. PS4 BC is a given at this point and PS3's difficult cell hardware makes it unsure if PS3 BC is even possible. In my opinion, if Sony wants to get it done they most definitely can! But given that PS1 & 2 BC was possible in the launch models of the PS3 there's no excuse why they wouldn't include it in the PS5, besides shady and greedy practiced.
It's time for Sony to stop with this nonsense and give us real BC!! Then again, they did say they still have some unannounced stuff to share with us so I'm hopeful, for now.
Probably will be waiting for the slim like I did with PS3 and PS4.
@Rob_230 This is me. I have kids, I have bills. Even if I didn't, I'm not getting burned by a mid-gen refresh again. I sat PS4 out until the Slim 1tb launched and it didn't kill me. Got both an Xbone and Switch in the first year only to get got. Also bit the 4k bullet early only to have nothing to stream on it, no games for it (this was a good two years before One S and PS4 Pro), and then HDR sets released.
So I'm not in for next gen until they release the refined consoles. Hell, I'm not in on new tech until it's been out a few years. I'll live.
@Spoonman-2 I did that with my PS4. I said it was a trouser press! 😂
@Dr_Derp
I could understand you getting away with calling it a short press (pant in UK), but who has trousers that small?
Sandwich toaster was a favourite for the phat PS3
I have very short legs 😂😂😂
