During the course of E3 2019, some hearsay from well-connected folks called into question whether Microsoft's Project Scarlett will measure up to PlayStation 5. Game Informer's Andrew Reiner was found to be spreading word that Sony's next-gen machine will be the more powerful of the two, and now, Colin Moriarty is claiming to have heard the same thing.
On his PlayStation-centric podcast, Sacred Symbols, Moriarty says that he's also heard this through the grapevine. Apparently, developers with access to both next-gen boxes are drawing the conclusion that the PS5 is more powerful.
It's obviously impossible to tell at this stage whether this will be the case, but we now have more than one person with industry insight claiming to have heard the same thing. To be clear, Moriarty says he doesn't know if it's true -- it's just the word on the street. The reality is that the two consoles will likely be very similar in terms of power; we know they'll have similar features, like an SSD and the ability to run ray-tracing.
Do you think the PS5 is going to best Project Scarlett in terms of power? Try not to start another console war in the comments below.

Doubts are raised once Colin Moriarty says something.
Probably from the same source, so...
So if one has 24GB of RAM but a little slower Zen 2 processor, and the other has 18GB of RAM but a faster version of Zen 2, can we really say which is more powerful? I've heard in Digital Foundry's analysis of the Zen 2 introduction that the next-gen consoles power clash won't necessarily be down to teraflops like it was in the 8th generation.
Yea..... some "leaked" specs are making the rounds atm saying the complete opposite but they dont jive with what AMD has confirmed about the GPU or what Digital Foundry said in their latest video so I'm not believing a word till its confirmed by more reliable sources.
24gb of RAM eh? What a world we live in. I remember installing a second stick of 8mb SDRAM into my old super computer back in the late 90's.
I think "moar powah" has to become less relevant as these powerhouses get, well, more powerful. Probably 1% or 2%, not 100%.
If PS5's more power is used for 8k, but less than 1% of gamers have an 8k tv, well games will be built to the Scarlett 4k spec anyway. Who's making 8k games for that few tvs?
Also, w/ MS going all in on Gamepass and Xcloud gaming Xbox becomes less relevant anyway. MS can start putting out new "moar powah' Xbox every other year. All 3 companies put out more powerful consoles about 3 years after launch - New 3DS, PS4 Pro, X1X - so maybe it's every other year going forward. Maybe "The Xbox" as a name and a concept makes like the iPhone and a more powerful one comes out every year or two.
One thing that impressed me, or maybe more surprised me, was both Sony and MS came out w/ more powerful consoles mid-gen but neither burned their fanbase but making games that only ran on the new hardware. And really as nice as some of the improvements may have been, I really don't recall reading about games "barley running" on the original hardware. Nintnedo did make a few "New" only games and a few, like Hyrulre Warriors, barely ran at all on the original hardware. Like a half-speed, half enemies crawl. But MS and Sony held true to their word, no split of the base.
So that said, maybe a year after launch New Scarlett squeaks ahead of PS5. Does it matter?
tldr; Hardware will be close enough to run the same games on the same 4k tvs, power difference will be insignificant.
Will it change anything to have a console slightly more powerful? I am more interested on developer's ability to run an optimised game and how easy it is to develop/port a game on each console.
I never owned an XBox and care very little about their exclusive IP. Also I noticed they are trying to confuse everyone with Project Scarlett... which acronym would be PS!
You'd imagine specs aren't finalised yet so entirely possible the current next gen PS dev kits are better than the current Scarlett kit.
@kyleforrester87 My first computer had 1 kilobyte of RAM.
Just show me Horizon 2, and you'll automatically get a sale from me. Power be darned.
@eltomo not unless you’re one of those people who hate on him because of political bias. The man knows what he’s talking about
honestly i don't care as long as i can play FFVII Remake then i'm fine, it doesn't matter if the PS5 is or isn't more powerful than the XB1 as the 2 biggest systems the games are going to be made for the lower end system in mind anyway
Power isnt everything. XBOX ONE X is more powerful then PS4 Pro. But PS4 have the games i love. So i don't care.
I can't speak for the majority of gamers but if I believe most of us don't care which one is more powerful. It's all about the games and Sony is the leader in quality exclusives. That will likely continue with the next generation.
@Hengist Look at us arguing over who had the smaller penis, I love it.
(P.S it's absolutely me.)
I met a guy who knows a guy who cleans the toilets at E3 and he says the PS5 can play audio CDs
maybe, maybe not. sony's said nothing about how powerful PS5 is/will be, and all MS have said is their's will be the most powerful they have built. i would be surprised if either has more than 16Gb RAM to be honest, and they'll both use fairly similar AMD APUs from the same family. maybe both realise that it probably won't matter that much.. the experience both will offer to the mass market will be more or less the same. i'd expect console games to be capped at 60fps, and graphical differences at resolutions lower than 4k will be almost imperceptible.
Microsoft is in a lot of trouble if ps5 is better specs wise than xbox scarlet since sony has already have better 1st party games (critics & sales).
Who cares about power really? As long as the great games keep coming that's all that matters
I don't even know who Colin whatsisface is.
"The PS5 and neXt-box will both play games that look pretty and run fine." I said that, quote me.
Does anyone ever stop to think.. hmm how much resources does this planet have for all these devices and gadgets and things? The mind boggles.
Then again, day one for me.
This is how rumors start...
I'm getting one too!
If there is a power difference I wouldn't expect a huge difference either way or to be even noticable in gameplay, I mean they are seemingly using the same parts and if the PS5 has an advantage perhaps that's for VR purposes. Anyway the power debate is irrelevant these days, as an owner of both Pro and X I can say that third parties can look marginally better on X with its 40% increase in GPU but have yet to see anything that looks better than God of War or even as good as it
@rjejr you still drinking Wilkins ☕ coffee.haha.ps5 is more powerful.word up son
@Neolit 3 it matters for Microsoft but not Sony.if ps5 is more powerful and cheaper .microsoft is in big trouble.its gave over for them.haha.word ☝ up son
If the specs are even just marginally higher and the price is the same or cheaper than Xbox thats gon be problematic for Microsoft. Like big time. Especially with rumors than ps5 versions if ps4s 1st party swan songs are inevitable and there wont be the 'launch drought' that have plagued other console releases
@jly1987 Colin's record:
Saying he "knows" what he is talking about is a statement that's hard to back up.
Yes, he knows a lot of PlayStation history, but I can't remember him having breaking news in yeaaaaaaaaaaars.
You don't need to be against his politics views, to take what he says with a grain of salt. He is hardly any insider anymore.
Power is definitely important.
That said, I'm more keen on them getting the design right this time. I bring it up quite a lot but the fan on the PS4 Pro is a joke, whereas a higher spec X1X is whisper quiet and has a smaller footprint.
@Neolit ZX80 mate. My ZX81 had the 16K RAM pack. Why would a computer need 16K of RAM, I asked myself, at the time?
@Turismo4GT The problem with 'teraflops' is that they are only relevant when looking at the 'same' generation and structure. For example, a 4Tflop GPU using Polaris is not equivalent to a 4Tflop GPU using Navi. With the 'X' being 6Tflops for example, if the PS5 is say 8 or 9tflops, doesn't make 33 or 50% better. 9Tflops on Navi could be as much as double what the 6Tflops of the X because its much more efficient and has lower latency too.
Its like having a typist that types at 60 words per minute compared to a new typist typing 90 words per minute but doesn't prevaricate as much or make as many mistakes so is both more efficient and with less latency so gets through a LOT more work than just 50% more that the 'numbers' would indicate.
This is why its not a good idea to state the tflops of the next gen. With peoples 'reference' point of what 1.84, 4.2, or even 6tflops, expecting 18 - 24 to be 3-4x as powerful, but only getting 9-12 could make it seem like a 'small' iterative jump up. Same with RAM with the X's 12GB so expecting at least 24GB when 12-16GB of GDDR6 could well be more than ample with much higher bandwidth. It seems that the CPU too is going to be an 8core - like this gen and if its only 3ghz, that's not much better than the 8core Jaguar CPU at 2.4Ghz in the X - its only 0.6Ghz more...
It makes much more sense to show what the games will look like, how they will run. If Sony come out with Games like H:ZD2 running at native 4k with 'high' visual quality settings but also 60fps+ (with HDMI2.1, games could run up to 120fps at 4k - look at Fifa17 - a 4k/60fps on Pro so why not 4k and up to 120 on PS5 - with VRR even 100fps would run smoothly.
If there is a 'significant' difference between Sony and MS's next console, that will factor into my purchase decision. However so many other factors (Price, games, legacy support, features etc etc) will also contribute to my decision. I won't buy the most powerful just because its the most powerful.
I didn't buy my PS4 first despite being the most powerful, I bought my Xbox first because of the games in the first 6months or so, what subscriptions I had on 360 would be transferred to XB1 (Gold and a Season Pass) and price. I know PS4 was 'cheaper' mainly because of Kinect, but I found an XB1 bundle with 4 games - inc one I had a Season Pass too and because Playstation required PS+ to play online, it worked out nearly £200 more expensive to buy a PS4 first.
Obviously with next gen, I will have PS+ in place so that shouldn't factor in like it did at the start of this - assuming we still need PS+ and/or Gold. Power may have 'more' weight next gen because if everything else is equal, it will be the only thing separating the two to make a decision on - either way, I will end up with both eventually...
@kyleforrester87 Don't be so sure. At the moment, it's very cold where I live.
@playstation1995 Well it's more powerful in theory, neither console actually exists yet. I know the dev kits do for both but what's stopping MS from cranking theirs up to 11 before launch?
Though as I said before, not that it matters, the 3rd party game devs always code to the lowest common denominator anyway, and the first party games can only be played on 1 console, regardless of power, see Switch games selling.
SONY has been good with Balancing Specs, price and longevity. Still amazed at the "Bang for the buck" I got from my PS4.
Regardless, I'll keep trusting SONY next GEN.
Meh. Power was never a huge issue for me. A bit better means nothing really. At the end of the day, the average gamer won't notice the difference.
@rjejr if ps5 is more powerful than x box.than its game over for Microsoft.ps5 cheaper console. and more powerful.x box needs help.wprd up son
My guess is ps5 will be more powerful. Sony is in a much better position to get more from AMD due to their market share lead.
However I don't think it will matter. These new consoles will both be very strong and it will come down to developers.
One big thing will be if some of these features like ray tracing will speed up development times. Look at death stranding with decimal engine. Seems that engine helped bring along a fast development cycle. Additional hardware features of the next gen could accelerate this further.
Idk what console will be more powerful but if PS5 ends up more powerful than cool if not cool as long as we get the exclusives which we will and I'm sure they will be amazing.
But does it have games thats the only thing i care about. If its 1440p with 60FPS im happy with some shiny new graphics. 😁
Really?
At best its a witness corroborating he heard the same thing at the same place. And its Colin who is reporting that Ms announced 8k at 120fps just a few minutes after saying that.
🤔
There'll be very little difference between them, it won't be a factor for me anyway as I base my choice on the quality of the games which is why I'll chose PlayStation again this coming gen.
For me, quality of first party games will matter in the end, and in current Gen there was no competition at all
@Kidfried well considering the fact that he said that microchip had plans. He didn’t say thru worked on it he said there were plans. I plan to do many things I don’t.
Secondly, he’s said that it’s definitely coming because how the first sold. He specifically said there is a significant 2nd party exclusive being worked on. He’s not going to call that out by name for risk of burning contacts. Nice try twisting words though
@JJ2 I dont believe that the new consoles do 8K with highend graphics on 120FPS.
@Kidfried
Agreed
Just a few minutes after saying he heard the same thing as Reiner he says Ms announced 8k at 120pfs.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Exactly. Its ridiculous what hes saying sometimes.
Just watching the scarlet announcement proves it
@kyleforrester87 my first pc came with 16 MB or Ram, 1.2 GB of hdd and Pentium I 133 MHz.... It looked so good at the time... I even double jump out of happyness when at Xmas my dad bought me a 3dfx card😂
@BAMozzy very good explanations re: the typist analogy.
"I won't buy the most powerful just because its the most powerful."
Couldn't agree more. In fact, when I was considering a current-generation system, I was leaning towards Xbox One because I wanted to try Forza, even though I'd had and enjoyed thoroughly PS1 and PS2. However, I jumped back on PlayStation 4 because I remembered my love for their earlier franchises, I really wanted to try the Uncharted Collection and The Last of Us and it was home to my favorite racing game series, Gran Turismo.
Whatever system ends up being more powerful next gen doesn't really matter. What will matter is does one or the other have the games I want to play, and for now, that still looks like it's going to be PlayStation. I'm not ruling out Xbox if they come up with some awesome must-play titles though.
@JJ2 Maybe im weird but high graphics at 120 FPS at 1440P i would have even be happy with a rocksolid 60FPS at 1440P.😆
@Neolit That made me feel better. I think the waste is the worst. If you see where half our old tech goes it is pretty ghastly. At the same time I see technology as the only way to maintain us as a species.
At 40.15 he goes on about 8k 120fps
And talk about Reiner ps5 more powerful tweet in the same sentence . How could you possibly take seriously what hes saying ?
https://youtu.be/O8ddCGsid18
@JJ2 to take what Andrew reiner said seriously?
@positiveemotions
No Haha. Colin
I'm sorry my eyes just hurt from rolling and I should just have shut my mouth Haha
@JJ2 well some rumors come true some don't I guess is best to keep an open mind.
@positiveemotions
Oh I'm not saying its false. It's very possible. Just (Colin s statement) not news worthy
@eltomo Colin Moriarty is well connected within the industry. I'm not sure that you should dismiss it. Bare in mind though all of these rumors are hearsay.
I'm going to actively root for PlayStation as a brand and certainly hope that it will be more powerful. That will make it's value proposition higher, hopefully, but a new xbox that is on par with ps5 would make competition much stiffer. That could lead to new and exciting risks on both ends. Either way I'm happy.
@playstation1995 If MS decides they only want to sell 30m Xbox in the US gen in and gen out they can probably do that with the FPS and sports fanbois. US fans are too thickheaded to admit they ever made a mistake in buying an Xbox, Xbox 360 or Xbox and will continue to buy MS consoles just so they now don't have to buy a Sony or gawd forbid kiddie Nintneod console. They'd rather die than admit they could ever possibly make a mistake.
They'll never ever release their numbers though, and never be competitive w/ Sony - home consoles - or Ntineod - handhelds - again.
@JJ2 understandable however we should take the rumors has a possibility.
Who cares? Good quality games are what matters, and Sony has a lot of them.
I think it won't really matter. Diminish returns and all. Maybe beneath the hood one will be more powerful, but I think the difference will be very hard to tell for consumers
@JJ2 MS Announced 8k AND 120fps capability - that's the Max resolution the console can output and the Max Frame rates - exactly the same as Sony has said too. Its not possible to do BOTH at the same time but with HDMI 2.1, 8K is possible and upto120fps is possible. However that's 8k/60 MAX or 4k/120fps MAX.
Even in that youtube video, it clearly says 8k AND 120fps which is exactly the same as Sony said too. HDMI2.1 doesn't have the bandwidth to deliver 8K at 120fps. Its the same reason we can't get 4k 120fps with HDMI 2.0 but 2.1 has more than double the Bandwidth (18Gbps for 2.0 and 48Gbps for 2.1).
When you consider that a PS4 Pro, a console with just a Jaguar CPU, 8GB of RAM and 4.2Tflops based on Polaris can run Fifa17 at 4k 60, a PS5 could offer 8k/60 (for 8k TV owners) or 4k/120 for 4k HDMI 2.1 equipped TV's - if you don't own a 4k TV with HDMI 2.1 ports, you will be limited to 4k/60 regardless - could be super sampled down from 8k like plugging in your Pro to a HD TV because there would be NO benefit to using the 4k/120 mode. The 'nextbox' has the 'same' potential too and all that 8k AND 120fps talk is more about confirming it to will have HDMI 2.1.
Regardless of whether one is more powerful than the other NO console could offer 8k at anything more than 60fps
The inferior Xbox Scarlett development kits may well relate to the cheaper model that was planned originally. It sounds like Microsoft got a lot of negative feedback from developers so the low powered version may well not happen. I certainly wouldn’t take it as meaning the PS5 will be significantly more powerful than the best Xbox which may well be the only one that actually gets produced.
@Neolit When we first left Africa the world was significantly colder. The were mega fauna on all the continents (except Antarctica). The were many other types of humans. There was land where the North Sea and Mediterranean Sea now are. Whilst the world has always changed I don’t think it was a coincidence that the megafauna always seem to die out shortly after the arrival of modern humans. It’s not that we don’t use up our resources and change our environment it’s that we find ways to use different resources and adapt to a new environment .
I just want an answer to the only relevant question there is:
If certain games make a PS4 Pro and an Xbone sound like an airplane taking off, will PS5 and Scarlett sound like a space shuttle launch when taxed?
I wonder how much more games will cost to develop for the PS5/XB2? You’ve got to think that with all that potential it’ll take more resources and man hours to live up to the specs.
@BAMozzy
Point is the trailer said:
........
Up to 120fps
........
8k capability
.........
Not at all what Colin s saying.(What Ms announced)
He can't even report properly what they said in a short trailer
What's even funnier now you get sites that report 8k 120pfs as valid rumours because Colin said that. Unbelievably lazy reporting
I don't care if it is or isn't because all that matters is the EXCLUSIVES and that is what the PS5 will do the BEST so er erm I don't care
This will only matter to fanboys, if i had more time, money and space i'd own all machines. Sony has me though as i'm invested in game series like Horizon and God of War, among others!
@JJ2 No where does it state or can be heard that the next xbox (or Playstation) will be offering 8k at 120fps. The consoles (BOTH) have been described as capable of offering 8k resolutions and up to 120fps - meaning that the MAXIMUM possible resolution is 8k and the MAXIMUM possible Frame Rate is 120fps. That doesn't mean the consoles can deliver BOTH maximum resolution and maximum frame rates simultaneously .
Its like saying Tomb Raider on X is capable of delivering 4k and 60fps gameplay - however you have to pick between high resolution OR high Frame Rates.
Anyone with any understanding of the technology available and comprehension of the context would understand that both the PS5 and NextBox will be 8k and 120fps machines because BOTH can output up to 8k resolutions and upto 120fps. However, you will have to decide whether you output to 8k OR 120fps if given the choice but you cannot have both at the same time. The console can do 8k (at up to 60fps) and it can do 120fps (at 4k). Its still a console that is 8k and 120fps because it can offer 8k and 120fps but NOT BOTH Simultaneously - Not that Sony or MS have claimed their consoles can do both. The X is 4k and 120fps console - just NOT at the same time!! HDMI2.0 will NOT have the bandwidth to do both, but it can do 4k or 120fps if you compromise on the other...
I don't know how else to put it. Its like a car manufacturer saying their car can do 150mph and get upto 50mpg - however you either drive at 55mph to get 50mpg, or put your foot down and get 150mph (and a ban for driving too fast LOL) but you CANNOT get both 150mph and 50mpg at the same time. That car is still 150mph car and still has a fuel economy of up to 55mpg - that's exactly the same principal. When car manufactures (or console makers) give these figures, they are talking about the 'maximum' resolution, speed, frame rate OR fuel economy that is possible bit not simultaneously.
Heard the CPU also has exclusive tricks in the PS5 that are only available in the PS5 CPU, as Sony and AMD jointly worked on them. Microsoft are using the slower, less capable off the shelf part.
I'll decide via the games, not the power.
So... PlayStation again for me.
@kyleforrester87 #18 duuuuuudeeeee 😂😂😂😂😂
You never fail to crack me up, by now I visit this comment sections in search of your pearls 😂
@clvr I’m glad somebody enjoys my awful shtick 😂
@kyleforrester87 keep it up, dude!
Never let anyone tell you to stop 😘😂
As usual...power is irrelevant. It's all about the games.
The PS4 had slightly more power, that did not matter much it was that $100 less that was the big deal. Most people who bought the PS4 didn't even know it had more power. What everyone knew is it was $100 less.
Microsoft also has to show it's going to be the games leader with better games. That is something they still have not done.
I think for Sony its really just about dont bring it out I mean you have the lead now and an audience who want to play GOW 2 Spider-man 2 and all the other games that came out this gens follow ups if they price it right and it is equal or better in power great
MS need to come out with a bunch of first party games in the first year to make people consider swapping for me and I dont mean more Halo I am sick of it
I never understood the console war. Why waste time hating on another console? I find places like Digital Foundry just makes it worse. Comparing fps between systems is one thing but I hate when they compare graphic quality. They will show the game side by side and they look the same but then slow it down 300% and zoom in 25x and say "look at this blurry edge of a leaf, see how it has a slight shadow. Its better on console a". I don't bother watching anymore as I don't play my games zoomed in 25x.
@Gumbopudding 😂😂 I know. But all the same DF has its uses. The stories always conclude like "all in all the graphics look good on both systems with system A having the edge with slightly more smoother toe nails on characters" 😂
Knowing Colins track record with his sources, more than likely.
@eltomo he's consistently spot on when he says it's from a source.
@Kidfried so you list two things he got wrong, which he didn't say came from a source, just a personal guess of his. He's got more right than wrong. I'm guessing your hate of him is because he's Conservative?
@JJ2 you were debunked on this in a previous thread. He got mixed up, and he ALWAYS corrects himself when pointed out. You keep repeating this like its a "gotcha", like he's clearly lying or misleading intentionally, when it's obvious to anyone who doesn't have an axe to grind, that he misheard what was said. Most people aren't uncharitable and don't assume malice.
@Katep This is the second time I have warned you about your language. Next time you don't watch the language will earn you a vacation from the site.
Thanks for understanding
@oldschool1987
I was debunked?
I never said theres malice.
I'm sorry if that offends you in any way but I was just pointing out facts. Of course he made a mistake. Everyone can make mistakes. That's the point. People tend to take everything they read in the press as facts. For the records, what's been made into so many articles here is actually just 'I heard stuff like that too' and that's it. It's very vague.
If anything it's more the press making articles about that that are at fault. I'm not really blaming him.
@oldschool1987 lol. Stop making assumptions about people you don't know. It's Abad look for you. I've always been a big fan of his talks on PlayStation. And no, I don't have some secret political agenda that makes that I want to see someone be wrong about a video game because of their political preference, pleaseeeee :')
@oldschool1987 Anyway, just name me one example of him being right on insider info in the last five years.
@JJ2 Maybe it displays movies in 8K but i dont believe the games are in 8K.
In the end it doesn't matter. Both will be powerful the question is which one has the devs with a proven track record to take full advantage of the hardware they're working on? That's Sony. MS has made a lot of purchases but we have to see how that will play out. As far as third party games? I think the differences will be very slight. I'm more concerned about censorship policies creating differences between versions of a game I want to buy as opposed to hardware. Both machines will be beasts but as has also been mentioned, PC will still crap on them, which is relevant because more devs are putting games there each gen.
@carlos82 Heard the CPU also has exclusive tricks in the PS5 that are only available in the PS5 CPU, as Sony and AMD jointly worked on them. Microsoft are using the slower, less capable off the shelf part.
Hardware differences are not that important on consoles, to me what really matters are the services and policies. And until today Xbox showed way better stuff for the next gen. I'm waiting to see what Sony has to show.
@Badbob
Not true.
Spencer and AMD are clearly making a point promoting the Scarlet processor as 'co engineered' between Ms and AMD
That's actually what they put the emphasis on.
Honestly, does it matter at this point at all?
Both will be plenty powerful. Both are basically PC (now more than ever) Platforms. So what. I care for good games and either way I'm growing too old or the games are more boring every release...
Wow this thread is still going 😅. Next-gen will be interesting I think, at one side ps5 with better exclusive and more powerful system, on the other side xbox two with better service and policies.
In the end both system will not be too different power wise if the price point is the same.
@JJ2 pointing out your mistake doesn't equal taking offense... I mean, nice try, I guess? If you think that's how easy it is to get offended then I suggest thicker skin.
But you have a fair point about many articles jumping on a random thing he was saying in passing and pushing it as news.
And everyone on the planet makes mistakes... Everyone. I don't think any journalist has claimed to have a perfect track record.
@Kidfried just one? Lol easy. He knew that Bethesda would announced Fallout 4 and that it would be out within 6 months from its reveal.
I bet you keep asking me to give more examples.
With how Sony has been with their censorship as of late, "power" might be a moot point if developers do not want to deal with it and move on. If they see that they can make the games they want without being forced to compromise for a different system of similar specs, then that may not be too far fetched if they drop Sony to an extent.

@3Above Not to be a grammar punk. But the correct term is jibe not jive. As in the information doesnt jibe. It's a sailing term meaning to line up. If I was using a word incorrectly I would want someone to let me know. Peace
@SilentS Actually I would say that's a pretty far fetched idea. Yes it's bollocks Sony is censoring at all. But it is ludicrous to think any game developers would abandon the market leader over that. At the end of the day it's about money. And with the latest polls showing people are more interested in the Ps5 52% to 14% Xbox to 26% Nintendo, that is unlikely to change. Combined with an over 100 million person player base because of backward compatibility and only the most niche Japanese sexualized games would consider such a move imho.
@JJ2 That may be true also. But the head of AMD said that the Sony processor had a special sauce which they had yet to detail. Which I dont recall her saying about Microsoft's chip.
@Exlee300p Thanks!
@Exlee300p Perhaps, but the market can easily shift at a moments notice if a "leader" screws up badly enough. The next wave of consoles are not out yet, but if Sony pushes their "rules" too far, then some of the bigger names can afford to simply bypass the system for the other(s) with a fresher start. Granted it most likely not happen, but I did say "may not be TOO far fetched". As an example, Microsoft lost a lot of ground simply because of their "always online requirement" they stated during the unveil of the XBox One.
In the end, the players will go where the games are. If they are not with a system, or limited with it, then they have a choice to move to another who has what they want. You can call it a niche market, but it is not just sexualized content that is being targeted, but also blood, violence, and anything else that could be considered suggestive. I am probably wrong on this, but it seems like Sony is going after it harder than what Nintendo did back in the NES and SNES days.
I'm not yet sold on PS5. If all it is is a more powerful PS4 Pro, which was a more powerful PS4, which was a more powerful PS3...
Now if it were backwards compatible all the way to PS3 titles... well, then we could talk. That sort of 3 generation support on one device, with the combined libraries of all 3 devices. THAT would peak my interest.
But a super charged PS4? Meh. I already have a blue ray player.
@Flaming_Kaiser I edited your post, I don'tnt want to see that kind of comment again. All are welcome here no matter what their preferred system to play games on.
Thanks for understanding.
@Exlee300p
They did say that recently (i don't recall specifically talking about the processor though ) but a while ago Lisa said Sony and Ms both have their own special sauce in an interview last year.. (I could give the link but not sure it's worth it tbh)
At E3 Lisa talked about Sony and Ms. She mentioned Sony worked collaboratively with AMD for the past few years. Talking of Xbox she said the exact same words as Spencer I.e. they co engineered the processor Xbox team with AMD.
After 21:

Note that even when Ms says Scarlet will be 4x more powerful than the X they insist that it's from a processing perspective.
I have the feeling xbox has more focus on the cpu while Sony spent more time on the whole APU but that's just how I understand it. I maybe wrong.
Also my opinion but I infer from it that AMD insisting on the processor makes it seem ps5 gpu is at least as good as xbox2 which means Digital Foundry being biased about ray tracing because Cerny supposedly was flimsy (so they say) is unfounded . I bet ray tracing is the same on both
Judging a Consoles final power by a Development Kit is a useless endeavour considering they always have extra RAM as standard and can differ slightly in configuration to released product.
Also the "Exclusive" argument is a little stale at this point when you have to wait so long for them and they usually end up forgotten quickly or flop badly or just don't live up to the years of hype pre-launch, just doesn't seem worth it waiting 5 years for an exclusive that last 10-15 hours.
As for the Power battle, the cloud makes that pretty pointless also with the computing happening in a server rack in a data-centre, not your console so the "power struggle" is pointless as they will be able to stream all next gens to a switch, android phone, let alone a PS5 or Xbox 2.
I don't consider myself a traitor and I'm not one to boast but I'm saving up to buy both consoles as they promise to be great machines with high quality exclusive titles. I am lucky enough to have both Xbox one X and PS4 Pro. They both have advantages over the other in different ways but they are great gaming machines. I'm glad I bought both because It has given me a lot more choice of games plus exclusives both sides are top quality. At the end of the day it's good for the industry as both continue to push for dominance in the games market which means better quality games for the consumer and games are the things that matter the most. Profits made from game sales far outweighs what is made from selling the hardware itself over the console life-cycle.
16-bit eh? Ppfffffft our system is
17-BBBIIIIITTTTTT!!!!!!!!!
@JJ2 it's spin. Microsoft are promoting they have worked with AMD so gamers assumed it's the same part as what's going on the PS5. It's not. Just like car engines, the same part can be tuned differently and have optional features that make it perform wildly different. Trust me, whilst on paper the PS5 CPU/GPU and Xbox CPU/GPU SKUs may seem similar, the PS5 cpu is seriously mor compressive, with higher clock, more lanes, and some on silicon tricks the Microsoft SKU doesnt (and cannot, due to Sony/AMD partner licencing) have.
