As far as we're concerned, the writing's been on the wall since the game was first revealed, and now CD Projekt Red is adding fuel to the fire. During the company's most recent financial results meeting, CEO Adam Kiciński mentioned the possibility of Cyberpunk 2077 being a cross-gen game. In other words, could it also be released on the inevitable PS5 as well as PS4?
The answer? Probably yes. "If there is an opportunity for us to launch Cyberpunk for another generation, we would want to do this probably," Kiciński said.
CD Projekt Red is supposedly still aiming to release Cyberpunk 2077 on current-gen hardware, and speculation's been rampant regarding the game's release date, with some evidence pointing towards it launching in 2019.
Now the thing is, Cyberpunk 2077 has always looked like a next-gen game. That 48 minute gameplay demo was immensely detailed, and we've always figured that ageing consoles like the PS4 may end up struggling with it. Obviously we'll have to wait and see how things play out, but if Cyberpunk 2077 launches beyond 2019, we think a PS5 version is absolutely nailed on.

"like the PS4 may end up struggling with it"
Free talking point article idea for you PS guys -
W/ this gen winding down and games going cross-gen, will there be any titles that will play on the PS4 Pro and X1X but not the base models? I know both companies said there won't be, and so far they have stuck to their word, but what about after the new gens launch? If say Cyberpunk 2077 is listed as a PS5 that can also play on the PS4 Pro technically they wouldn't be leing about a PS4 game being divided between the 2 models, they could simply argue it's PS5 games that can play on the PS4 Pro but not the PS4 Slim. Might be semantics, but it might be legally binding enough semantics to hold off the inevitable lawsuit.
I'm not sure Sony would do it, could cut into PS5 sales, but I can imagine MS doing it since X1X is so much more powerful than X1 or X1S, and more expensive too. Might keep their X1X owners happy for awhile.
Just a thought.
It's expected but I hope it doesn't get too compromised in order to support so many platforms
I think it's an inevitably at this point. Even if it does release this year may as well hold out for the ps5 version. Really like the looks of this game, hopefully it will pull me in more than the Witcher 3 did.
@NintendoFan4Lyf another add on.
i could see the base game run on all current and next gen consoles (PS and xbox) but any pottential dlc to be next gen only like what happened with dragon age inquisition.
I want to play Cyberpunk 2077 as soon as it's released but I'll be double dipping for sure.
@NintendoFan4Lyf "be the first game released on PS4 , but have a PS5 "patch"
That would be Knack, or inFamous Second Son. I'm sure there will be LOTS of PS4 games upgraded on PS5 if there is BC. GTAV has never gotten any Pro enhancements, surely that will get some. Though I think they'll SELL that one as a new version, no patch.
Cyberpunk 2077 with PS4 graphics on PSVR 2 on the PS5. Now that would be awesome.
I've seen much better looking Pro games so I don't know what you guys "thought" you were seeing that made you think the writing was on the wall...
It would be one hell of a system seller for a next gen, I think..
Yeah, given how badly TW3 ran on PS4, I can't see Cyberpunk 2077 being a good experience on current gen stuff apart from the XB1X. It'll be a great launch game for PS5 though.
"...we've always figured that ageing consoles like the PS4 may end up struggling with it."
I dunno. TLOU proved you can still squeeze an all but next-gen title from a console at the end of its life. And that was the PS3, routinely cited as a nightmare to code for. Though admittedly that was a first-party dev and not open world. But still...
Depending on the launch date I might just get it on my Pro.
I've always said it's a PS5 game yes they'll release for PS4 to gain traction and money back but PS5 version is where it will be the version will more bells and whistles
I would buy it day one on ps4-pro then wait for a discount price to play it again on PS5.
@NintendoFan4Lyf that's actually a legit idea. I was so sorely disappointed when, after buying a few games at the end on ps3, I found out there was no way to carry my saves across or play those games on my new ps4 without rebuying (last of us, diablo 3, dragon age...). If ps5 is going to be backwards compatible, it'd be great to know that you could keep your ps4 hard copy and simply upscale them for the next gen console, as with upscaling on the pro!
@Useyourname haha, you mean Skyrim isn't?
And I expect The Witcher 3 to be re-released on next gen too, along with a ton of other games. So?
I don't understand... so they will release a PS4 version first (many months before the PS5 will be released), then when the PS5 is out, it will be a "true PS5" version of the game (which won't run on a PS4), as well as a patch to upgrade PS4 version to PS5 version? And what if the non-patched PS4 version is run on the PS5 via BC, how all these game versions will differ?
This is definitely one of those later-gen games that I'm interested in that will likely be put on the backburner because I absolutely expect a PS5 version, even if it's not announced before the current-gen release.
It’ll probably go the same route as GTAV did - release on current gen first, and then later on next gen. Didn’t do GTAV sales any harm!! 😁
Who cares about you console peasants - I can play this on my cheap ass £600 gaming PC and it will still look better than the PS5.
Maybe you all should think about that for a second... for an extra £200 you could have a gaming PC that'll piss all over any console on the market AND do about 50% more with it. Wake up a console is just a rip off PC in a prepacked idiot friendly box.
Add to that you can upgrade when YOU like, a few bits at a time, till you have a £1000+ gaming machine that'll make your console look like a kids toy.... oh wait that IS what a console is
Time to man up and grow up and get a real gaming machine people.
@BeardedGelfling And who cares about you PC Master Racer? BTW, it's practically impossible to have a game look good on a computer that costs just $600 (I couldn't find the pounds sign on my keyboard). Good gaming PCs cost well over $2000 (an estimate based on what I've seen) and take forever to set up. By the time you're done setting up, you'll be too tired to play and you'll end up going to bed because of that.
Maybe you should sit down and think about your behaviour for a few hours.
Upgrading is a very expensive thing, especially when it comes to stuff like extra space via Hard Drives or Solid State Drives. Also, gaming consoles kids' toys? I've never heard a more idiotic thing in my life.
And on the "man up" thing, seriously? You couldn't think of a better argument? I'm laughing sweat off just thinking about that. LOL.
Lol triggered.
