Good news for those of you who plan on picking up Star Ocean: The Last Hope on PlayStation 4: the game comes with optional Japanese audio. Why is that such a big deal, you may ask? Well, it's no secret that the English voices range from passable to downright abysmal. And when we say abysmal, we mean it -- it's truly terrible at times. If you don't believe us, we dare you to watch this clip.
The original Xbox 360 release gained an infamous reputation for the quality of some of its voice acting, but the issue was partly rectified for the International edition of the game thanks to the thoughtful inclusion of a Japanese voice option. Thankfully, that option has been carried over to this current-gen remaster.
The Last Hope is out today on PS4, by the way. If you decide to nab it, you get a theme along with some avatars. PlayStation Plus members also get a ten per cent discount until the 12th December.

If I remember correctly, you could set the voice option per character if you wanted to mix it up.
Based purely on that clip alone, I feel like the problems with this game go WAY deeper than the way the voice actors are delivering their lines.
If this is The Last Hope for Star Ocean, then it might be more merciful to just let it die...
Just as bad as xenoblade chronicles 2.
@Xaessya Really? I wonder if that's carried over too.
Still dissapointed about the digital only part.
I played it on 360 it was awful from what I sort of remember and I remember one achievement that you need to find all chests and you can miss one as its got no return point and would have to start over again unless you saved before. Because of this I was using a guide for a long time and its one reason why I found it boring.
Yeah, I have pretty high tolerance for english dubs and generally prefer those, but this was a case where I was forced to swap to japanese, it was that irritating.
Still SO4 didn't do much for me, it was one of my first games on the PS3 so I recall being very impressed by its graphics at the time, the battle system was fun and Motoi Sakuraba's music was decent but the story and characters were total garbage and the dungeons just DRAGGEEEDDDD! I have no interest in ever returning to this game.
@AlejandroMora Really? How's the voice acting in Xenoblade Chronicles 2?
@Ralizah This. After the disappointment with SO5, I think is time for Tri-Ace to just let the franchise die. I mean, they didn't even updated SO5 when it was released. Sadly, the fanboys will keep on defending the series, even though the only SO games that were well recieved by fans were the first and second, while the third, fourth, and fifth games garnered mixed reactions.
@SoulsBourne128 watch the last story trailer and judge for yourself.
I liked the English voices, but good to know Jap voices are an option.
