Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick has trotted out a teensy tidbit regarding the future of Rockstar’s popular Red Dead Redemption franchise – chiefly, that the series won’t be hanging up its cowboy hat anytime soon. Chatting at the Cowen & Company Analyst conference earlier this week, the intelligent executive stressed that the firm considers the Western sandbox to be a “permanent” property – in other words, one that it will be able to milk for years to come.
“I pretty much know the [franchises] that I can assure you are permanent,” he told an audience. “It’s obvious that Grand Theft Auto is a permanent franchise as long as we keep delivering this incredible quality; it seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise, again with the same caveat, or Borderlands, for example, and NBA and others.”
Zelnick was talking about the risks of releasing too many games, but stressed that he wants his company to keep experimenting with at least one new thing each year. According to the well spoken suit, this will allow it to discover fresh “permanent franchises” to add to its portfolio. “Not everything is going to be a permanent franchise,” he warned. “Some of our great franchises eventually will lose their lustre, and some will hopefully be permanent.”
Rumours regarding a new Red Dead Redemption have been rife for years now, with developer Rockstar San Diego purportedly beginning production shortly after the previous title released. The label responsible for the series is planning to deploy a next-gen game before the end of March, but we suspect that that will be a Grand Theft Auto V port for the PlayStation 4. We doubt that John Marston and crew will be too far behind, though.

Hoorah
Edit: Hooray is what that was meant to say.
Hopefully it will be better than Redemption. Contrary to most peoples opinions, I found Redemption to be a lackluster chore to play through. The online mode was decent though if you had enough people with you so it would be good to see that expanded on Ps4. Wouldn't mind seeing another Red Dead in a similar vein to Revolver though, quite enjoyed that one.
@MadchesterManc
@MadchesterManc I played like an hour or two of redemption and couldn't get into it. I'm willing to give it another shot, especially if it comes to ps+ (in the US).
@MadchesterManc I thought redemption was nice enough but I couldn't bring myself to play it through, I found undead a lot more fun, yes its the old cliche zombie slaughter fest but riding round on a flaming horse rifling down the undead in the wild west has to be fun right...
I implore you to make this game.
I thought RDR was one of the best games on PS3. I thought it was a superior game to GTAV, too. Would love to see a sequel on PS4.
@Splat Nicely done.
@Splat this guy.
Also, RDR was a pleasure to play. Captured the brutality, isolation and lawlessness of the West. Great characters and top story.
I for one will be there day one for the next addition.
RDR was one of my top 5 games last gen so any more in the series would be more than welcome into my house!
redemption is one of my all time favourite games. I hated revolver though. So a sequel (or prequel) to red dead redemption would be amazing for me
@Punished_Boss My thoughts exactly.
Can we petition to have @ManchesterManc banned for blasphemy?
I would absolutely love a ps4 version of red dead redemption it was one of my favourite games last gen
@Punished_Boss @KAPADO Whats blasphemous about not being jacked into the AAA Rockstar gravy train? I wasn't aware that having an opinion that differs to the mainstream norm would hurt people so
@MadchesterManc Really? Me linking that pic wasn't an hint enough it was joke. I just like reactionary pics/gifs
Adored RDR and the slow ride into Mexico still lingers in my mind as one of those sublime gaming moments. Like the giraffes in TLOU. The José González backing track was perfect.
If there is a sequel coming to PS4, I'd better go polish my saddle...
Red Dead Redemption was one of the best games this gen imo, so this is good to hear. Well, that and I'm a sucker for westerns, so theres that.
I was on a bit of a western kick when I picked it up too actually. Who'd have though reruns of Little House on the Prairie would lead to that.
@MadchesterManc
Completely agree. I liked Redemption, but just like GTA, it got old real fast. I thought it was overrated, once again, like GTA. In fact, almost all of Rockstar's games are like that. Critics give Rockstar's games perfect scores & I have no idea why. Bully was another overrated GTA clone. People even loved that Table Tennis game when it came out. That game was crap. Bc Rockstar made it, it got great scores.
@Mrskinner
Yeah, Revolver was trash and partly because of that game my expectations for Redemption weren't too high. Fortunately, the latter ended up being a fantastic game. I'm definitely down for a sequel, though I still think I'd rather they release GTA VI first.
@Gamer83 my personal preference on rock star IP's would be rdr 2, bully 2 then gta vi as 5 is still so fresh in the memory. But if I was to be really greedy, I wish they would do another manhunt!
@ShogunRok I own the game of the year edition...have not put it in my PS3 yet. Bought it new on sale, got home and looked up the trophy list. Competitive multiplayer trophies. No thanks.
would be awesome to play a new red dead game!
