How many biomes are there in Returnal? How many different environments are there to discover? As part of our Returnal guide, we're going to tell you the number of different levels there are to explore, giving you their names and a brief description.

Returnal: How Many Biomes Are There?

There are 6 biomes to discover in Returnal. Below, we've listed them all, along with a brief description of what type of environment they are.

Overgrown Ruins

Returnal Overgrown Ruins

Overgrown Ruins is the first biome in the game. It's a dark, rainy forest environment, dense with foliage but featuring the ruined structures of an ancient alien civilisation. Crumbling structures and statues combine with tall grass and thick trees in this (mostly) natural area.

Crimson Wastes

Returnal Crimson Wastes

Crimson Wastes will be your second stop in Returnal. This is a stark contrast to Overgrown Ruins, located on the other side of planet Atropos. It's an almost Mars-like desert environment with red sand and more ancient buildings, with a mysterious mountain in the distance.

Derelict Citadel

Returnal Derelict Citadel

Derelict Citadel is up next. This biome takes place in an enormous fortress-like environment, with sheer drops, high platforms, and the ruins of autonomous beings lying everywhere. You'll work your way to a looming tower at its centre.

Echoing Ruins

Returnal Echoing Ruins

Echoing Ruins is somewhat similar to Overgrown Ruins, with the same forest-like environment. However, there are big differences in the enemies, flora, and variety of areas, so don't expect it to be a walk in the park.

Fractured Wastes

Returnal Fractured Wastes

Fractured Wastes is a cold, snowy biome, almost the opposite of Crimson Wastes. You'll work your way through icy caverns and fend off dangerous robots, dodging dangerous waters and dash-proof lasers.

Abyssal Scar

Returnal Abyssal Scar

Abyssal Scar is the name for this creepy, underwater landscape. Running along platforms in the waters of Atropos, your jump is twice as effective in the murky depths, and you'll have to fend off exploding squids and face giant alien sea life.
