Not a bad indie Direct at all. Some genuinely good games in there. I’m very worried about the NL staff describing Omori as ‘cute’ though, it’s not a game you take lightly at all.
@Kidfried I’ll probably pick up Chicory now it’s on Switch but I think what stood out to me was River City Girls 2 despite being a known quantity as it just looked fantastic. Sea of Stars and Loco Motive both looked great as well!
Nothing of interest. Bit of a disappointment after that excellent August showcase. But I've learned not to get my hopes up about indie world broadcasts.
I was just browsing through the Christmas sale and I don't know if this is an error or not, but Saints Row IV: Re-Elected is only €3 right now on Switch eShop. Absolutely worth getting at that price.
Parent's evening... is that, like, a parent-teacher conference where you sit them down and talk about how their child is doing in school?
I never envied teachers having to do those, especially when it comes to the kids who aren't taking too well to an academic environment!
Ha that's exactly what it is... And thanks... It's about as bad as you expect. Luckily not that bad. Never had to do one last year cus.. Well... ya know
Having played it more thoroughly, Nocturne has revealed itself to be a lot more obviously flawed than I initially realized. It's still a good game, but I think I'd probably say DDS1 is my favorite MegaTen game on PS2 at this point (with the sequel easily being the worst). I do explain all of my gripes in the review.
Honestly it'd probably be a tie for me with Persona 3 and Nocturne with DDS1 just trailing behind.
Last'd be poor Raidou, it just wasn't that fun to play despite loving the time period and atmosphere
I'll get to SMT III soon now that I'm free from work for 3 or so weeks!
IMO if you decide to play the original again, go with the GBA version. It has the official Atlus localization patched into it, and the presentation has been touched up just enough that it's actually very enjoyable to play. I blitzed through it on my phone earlier in the year and had a great time.
Still stuck with the SNES version of II if you don't speak Japanese, though.
Oh after your review earlier in the year the GBA it would definitely be the version I'd play if I went back to retry SMT I.
Aww, I love Soul Hackers. One thing I really dig about many of the 3DS SMTs (I guess this is technically a Saturn SMT, but whatever) is how so many of them have this amazing cyberpunk vibe to them.
I do need to go back and finish it someday.
I got about halfway through it I think? Something about your sister in an art gallery? I was initially quite into it but... The story got really stale and uninteresting personally and the gameplay was a bit ho-hum too. Liked the opening though.
MR2 is one of my favorite PS1 games, yeah, and my favorite game in the series overall. Best assistant character, my favorite minigames, and a big step up over the original, which felt a little too rudimentary for my liking. I really, really like the simulation elements in the game as well.
And, of course, the disc gimmick is amazing. Choosing music tracks in the Switch version won't have the same charm, although I'll be glad to own a portable version of the game.
Have you played all of them then Ral? One of them is an actual RPG isn't it?
There is a random select option I believe for the database function... so you can capture some of that old magic at least Ralizah! 😄
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy I really need to play the Raidou games. Via emulation, because I'm certainly not paying through the nose for expensive secondhand copies of them.
I think I'll start P3 soon. Next year. Either Atlus will announce a remaster soon or I'll just play one of the versions I already own. Really torn between FES and P3P, though. FES' presentation is so much better outside of dungeons, but only being able to control one character in your party UGH
"Have you played all of them then Ral? One of them is an actual RPG isn't it?"
I played MR 2 & 3 pretty thoroughly. Played much less of MR 1, because it's a lot more basic compared to the sequel, which I experienced first, and, sadly, I never had the opportunity to play MR 4, although I definitely will if I ever stumble on a used copy that's reasonably priced.
First three games are all simulation games with heavy RPG elements, although it's highly possible one of the many spinoff games was an actual normal JRPG.
"There is a random select option I believe for the database function... so you can capture some of that old magic at least Ralizah!"
Well, the 'old magic,' as it were, was from actually popping in discs one owned. It's fine. Even on PS4, in this day and age, it wouldn't work out considering how many people have transitioned away from physical media. I guess they could make it where downloads generate monsters as well, but then that's not really any better than the system in the Switch port, and still destroys the theming of using discs to summon them.
Still glad to have the game playable on a modern system. Hopefully it also releases on Playstation so you can try the series out!
@Ralizah I’d recommend FES for the male route, followed by Portable for the female route. There’s no definitive version so that way you’d at least see both experiences. I’m gonna do that myself after I finish Innocent Sin for the umpteenth time.
I've been playing a lot on my Vita lately and it's got me thinking that even though the Switch is a more impressive hardware, the Vita just has a lot of things that appeal to me more. For starters, its small size makes it perfect for handheld play while the Switch can feel a bit clunky to hold for long duration. The main appeal of the Switch is that you're able to play both on the TV and on the go, but with Remote Play, you can do that with a PS4/Vita as well. Granted, the controls won't always translate well to the Vita and the streaming quality may differ, but from my recent experience of it, it's pretty good.
When it comes to games though, the Switch easily has the better library overall. Vita is home to my favourite games of all time, but there are sadly not as many great games on there compared to the Switch. I mean, just imagine if the Vita was getting titles such as Persona 5 Strikers, Trials of Mana, Bravely Default II and so on today. It would make it a much more appealing system. One thing that makes it better than Switch though is that you're able to play PS1 and PSP games on it. Nintendo has NES, SNES and N64 titles but those can only be accessed through a subscription service. At least you're able to choose which games you want to get on Vita and there are a lot of great titles.
It's just so fascinating to me that a handheld system like the Vita, which is closing in on 10 years now, is still relevant and appealing to use today. That just goes to show how far ahead of its time it was. While I have plenty of games to play on the Vita, it's still inevitable that I'll stop using it in the near future because it hasn't been getting any noteworthy games for a long time now. That's why I'm glad the Switch exists because it's an excellent system and a worthy "successor" to the Vita due to it offering the same kinds of games that I'd expect on Vita (JRPGs, indies, visual novels and so on). I honestly can't say which one I like more, both are such phenomenal devices and I'm happy to own them both.
@RogerRoger If you think Picross is boring, then you need to play the harder puzzles. 5x5 and 10x10 are easy, it's when you get to 15x15 and 20x15 that the game becomes interesting. It's genuinely one of the most addicting puzzle games I've ever played.
@RogerRoger Well, they aren’t ports. They’re emulation therefore I genuinely cannot see how in the world they could screw up Sonic 2. I tried it a bit there (first 3 zones) to see and the physics glitches didn’t happen at all but I did feel like the ring sound effect didn’t always play when I grabbed them. That could be an emulation issue but it’s bizarre that there seemingly weren’t any testers raising that issue. I can understand issues with the N64 app because the N64 is a bloody nightmare to emulate at the best of times but the Mega Drive has been emulated successfully for years and years now.
@RogerRoger Ah I see. How about an 'Ace Attorney'-like visual novel with Picross puzzles then? It's called Murder By Numbers, so maybe that one will appeal to you more.
I really need to play the Raidou games. Via emulation, because I'm certainly not paying through the nose for expensive secondhand copies of them.
Through the PS3? Or "other" methods @Ralizah? We never got Raidou 2 over here which is supposedly better. I could get and try it through my american account but... I found the combat in one rather mindnumbing and I doubt that's been overhauled enough for me to consider it.
I sold my PS2 copy of the first a few years ago and the prices for it now are ridiculous. Persona 3 FES PAL copies go for the same range at nearly £200! 😮
I think I'll start P3 soon. Next year. Either Atlus will announce a remaster soon or I'll just play one of the versions I already own. Really torn between FES and P3P, though. FES' presentation is so much better outside of dungeons, but only being able to control one character in your party UGH
I'd say it's probably better to go for FES seeing as you can play "The Answer" as well.
You could play P3P for the main game and then go for FES for the answer... But going from full party control to singular control for the harder epilogue scenario will probably make you tear your hair out... 😅

Let's hope Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX did successful enough that the others can see the light of day once more and you don't have to pay through the nose to play it

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy "Other methods" for sure, since I don't own a PS3 (and, at this point, probably never will). Although I'll absolutely purchase the games physically should Atlus ever decide to reprint them.
I haven't checked lately, but until at least a few years ago, Atlus did an amazing job of keeping most of their PS2 MegaTens in the $20 price range, including P3 FES. Hopefully they decide to reprint their rare 3DS titles someday as well for people who come along later and want to build a collection, like I did with the PS2 games.
Still undecided, but if I happen to want to do multiple playthroughs, I'll probably go with the route suggested by @nessisonett : FES + the answer for guy, and then P3P for femMC. That sounds like an insane amount of content, though, so I might just play guy route in P3P and call it a day anyway.
It's hard to imagine some overpriced PS1 ports sold particularly well, even if I have a soft spot the size of Jupiter for the Monster Rancher games. We'll see.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
I know the N64 emulation is considered bad but it's got nothing on Jak and Daxter running on my PS5. How an upscaled emulation of a PS2 game is practically stuttering baffles the mind 🤣
Anyway, my poor Switch is almost at full Pokedex completion in Pearl and I need to keep speedrunning Metroid. So it's getting some usage going forward.
I'll probably skip Legends Arceus, and then...backlog I guess? Nearly 200 Switch games will do that to a person.
Or I start using my PS5 more. Barely touched it since Ratchet. Or that new Xbox Series S I got.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
