@TheBrandedSwordsman so I was only able to listen to three songs (I don’t use Spotify and have no YouTube account) but I enjoyed them! ‘Hullo Bolinas’ , ‘Away’ and ‘Radio’. I really like Radio.

@Jimmer-jammer I'm glad you enjoyed the Sco songs from his oeuvre of work, Radio is great, but then, they all are to me. Apart from his Blue Matter record - that sounded too 80s for my tastes. Care to recommend something yourself?

@TheBrandedSwordsman my music listening as of late has been all over the map. Haven’t sat down and listened to an album from start to finish for too long. With that said, the last one I listened to was ‘Gish’ by The Smashing Pumpkins. It’s an excellent album and still my favourite of theirs so I’ll throw that one out there.

@TheBrandedSwordsman I’ll attempt to expand beyond, “There’s just something about it.” 😬
In a word: drums. I find the percussion on this album is something special, particularly within the genre. Chamberlin’s jazz roots creep into every corner, offering a beating heart to the music that feels almost improvised. An immediacy and grooviness that creates an emotionally raw and uniquely expressive backbone for the scaling bass and the ‘wall of sound’ guitars that are hallmarks of Smashing Pumpkins’ identity. Also, they just sound great. Kudos to the engineers.
Beyond that, as a debut album, it’s an astonishingly accomplished effort. Song to song, it’s surprisingly dynamic and each song progresses in such a natural feeling and creative way. It’s the type of record I can put on, lay on a couch with my eyes closed and just listen from start to finish, lost in space. Every song earns it’s place.
I quite like a lot of their catalogue but for me, ‘Gish’ represents the fertile ground that sprouted an immensely successful, creative, unwieldy career that, for better and worse, will probably never be able to recapture the beauty and simplicity of a garden in its infancy.
Oh boy, a whole bunch of people are playing Glasgow over the next few months. I’ll probably grab tickets for Sea Power, Black Marble, The Jesus and Mary Chain, LCD Soundsystem, Viagra Boys, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Big Thief, Yves Tumor, Cloud Nothings, Dinosaur Jr, Jeff Rosenstock, Low and Richard Hawley.
Part of me’s also tempted by this year’s summer gig in the park of Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy to appease my inner 12 year old. It’s like £70 though so no chance 😂
@nessisonett Ah if only I didn't have responsibility for the little guys. Totally envious especially for Sea Power, LCD Soundsystem, Yves Tumor, Low and Richard Hawley!
@Jimmer-jammer I reckon that's a brilliant mini-review of Gish right there, the jazz drumming certainly intrigues me but I am not really a rocker any more. Interestingly enough, I identified with Billy Corgan's sentiment on Mellon Collie, that is to say, the sentiment he had when writing that album, 'putting his teenage memories in a shoe-box and putting it away under the bed' when I was listening to it, that was the last time I seriously listened to rock music, I have only had a casual/occasional interest in it ever since.
N.B This is because rock and metal represent my teenage memories/self to a large degree.
@Kidfried been meaning to ask, did you already see Aldous Harding?

@zupertramp That's planned for 2022! Music venues are still closed because of COVID. It's weird that I kind of... lost a hobby because of this disease. I've been to a few covid-shows in between the peaks, but I still have most of my concerts planned for next year unfortunately.
