Hogs-of-War-General

Braveheart and Schindler's List are both classics! I have both on blu ray but can only imagine how much more crisp the visuals and audio are in 4k!

Oh so there is an original for Speak No Evil? Definitely have to look into that! For Never Let Go imagine The Shining meets Frailty. Definitely worth watching in my opinion however I lean into dark, suspenseful, and horror films.

The Substance - a tough watch fair play. I get why it’s garnering so much awards gossip and positive reviews but it’s not for the faint hearted. As a general rule I love dark and disturbing movies… and the first half of this was fascinating but as soon as the body-horror took full-effect and the psychology of the youth devouring the old, it began to make both the missus and I (and everyone in the theatre) a bit uneasy. We actually had a couple of walk outs!

Still a very well made and thought provoking commentary on Hollywoods unhealthy fascination with female youth and beauty though… and Fargeat is clearly an uber-talented director who will undoubtedly gather a cult audience in much the same way Cronenburg and Lynch did back in the 80’s. Demi Moore was brilliant… and I’ve never really thought much of her if I’m honest. Qualley plays totally against type surprisingly well as a fame-obsessed young beauty and Dennis Quaid is similarly cast as a character opposed to his usual fare… playing a Harvey Weinstein-esque TV producer and doing a good job.

If you like Cronenburg’s body horror movies… and have the stomach for a whole lot more, check it out. Particularly in a theatre, as the reactions of those around you will definitely add something to the experience.

@FuriousMachine im glad you enjoyed it buddy… as I say it really is a well made film that says some really important things. It is shocking though… and that’s from someone who isn’t easily shocked. Maybe I’m just getting old… which in fairness this film pushes direct buttons 😅

@colonelkilgore hehehe, yeah, knowing the premise, I was interested to see if it would shake this newly minted 50 year old going in. It didn't affect me much, though, as it was so over the top (especially in the latter half) that it tickled my funny bone more than anything else. Great satire with a solid yuck factor (yeah, I had to avert my eyes a couple of times )

@colonelkilgore I was planning on seeing this film because I heard of the body horror and glad to hear that it doesn't disappoint in the respect haha! There needs to be more body horror films and would definitely appreciate any recommendations from you guys.

As I have gotten older I have noticed that things become more disturbing in films, which definitely adds to the immersion which I am all for! Intensity also becomes increased with films I have already watched dozens of times.

I watched The Shining yesterday on 4K and damn was it more intense and disturbing then ever before. I don't remember the audio being such a huge facet to the film but it's a character in and of itself.

@Hogs-of-War-General If you are into your body horror films, I can recommend Possessor directed by Brandon (son of David) Cronenberg. It is a few years old, so you might of seen it already.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@JohnnyShoulder Yeah I have seen Possessor and unfortunately it was disappointing. A lot of people were hyping it up and it just didn't work for me. There also wasn't much body horror which was such a letdown.

@Hogs-of-War-General I had the same experience with "Possessor". The hype level set my expectations too high and it didn't deliver for me. Hope you'll enjoy "The Substance"

Ever since I fell in love with Ana DeArmas kicking all kinds of a$$ in "No Time to Die" I've been hankering for an action film with her as the lead. So when I heard they were going to spin-off one of my favourite action series, John Wick, and cast her in the lead role, my excitement levels shot through the roof. This movie has a high bar to clear, but the trailer has me optimistic

@FuriousMachine I don't understand the hype behind that movie. There wasn't anything special about it and it sort of just dragged on. Didn't much care about the protagonist either, which never helps!

I will let you know what I think tomorrow! Anyone going to watch Megalopolis? It looks interesting.

@FuriousMachine I'm not big on the John Wick franchise but she is a babe and it looks surprisingly entertaining, so most likely will watch!

@Hogs-of-War-General I think maybe my biggest problem with "Possessor" was that it had such a brilliant premise but ultimately failed to do anything truly interesting with it.

I'll probably skip "Megalopolis"; it sounds like a right mess from the reviews I read. Coppola has made a couple of my favourite films, but I fear this is another case of "ageing filmmaker's self-indulgent vanity project" and while those can end up good, I find them lacking more often than not. I might check it out down the line, but it's not a priority in my cinema schedule.

@LN78 LOL, that's exactly the experience I'm looking for when going to the movies

@LN78 Just watched the review. Great stuff! "The most slappable performance" by Shia LeBeouf... that says a lot
