@JohnnyShoulder Yeah, same here, but it depends a little bit on what the original language is when it comes to animation. If it is Japanese, I will probably go with that, otherwise I'll go English.
Anybody who remembers enjoying the Beverley Hills Cop movies back in the 80s (Those as old as me!) should probably give the new Axel F movie a watch. I found it surprisingly enjoyable and exactly what I needed to see last night.
“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
Just got back from a 25th anniversary screening of The Matrix in a fairly packed theatre and it was predictably epic!
It's not that long ago that I revisited the movie, so that it held up really well was known, but it was really fun seeing it with loads of people, some my age and older and quite a few young'uns that probably weren't born when it first came out and the atmosphere was electric (which is rare for us Norwegians; we are typically a very reserved lot).
Also fun that it was the same theatre I saw it in originally back in '99 (albeit upgraded and refurbished).
@Malaise Yeah, it can be a magical thing. There's always the chance that you get "big children" in there who thinks it's more fun being disruptive rather than watch the movie, but when you get an enthusiastic crowd clearly enjoying the movie with you, like I did yesterday, you almost feel a kinship with the other patrons, and that is truly an enjoyable thing (even for a misanthrope like me )
@Malaise yeah, seems there are quite a few of us out there these days. Could be that I'm just turning into a grumpy old curmudgeon or maybe it's the times we're living in, but my faith in humanity has never been lower. I like to say that I "hate people, but can learn to like individuals"
If it turns out that it is indeed the current state of affairs across the globe producing more and more misanthropes, we should start a club! We could have meetings and loathe each others company!
Saw Twisters in Imax last night. It wasn't one I was super excited for, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Pretty good summer popcorn flick.
I would have liked for it to have had some sort of deeper connection to the original Twister though, as it pretty much had nothing to do with it outside of the theme. The new gen did have an old Dorothy device in like the first 10 minutes of the film, but it's not explained where they got it (no one seems to be descended from the OG cast), and it never appears again after the fact.
Otherwise, here are the movies I watched last weekend:
Ocean Waves (Blu-Ray) - Ghibli film that breaks away from their typical fantastical mold in favor of a more grounded drama/romance centered around a group of friends in high school. Could be a tad slow at times, but I actually really enjoyed it.
V for Vendetta (Blu-Ray) - Got this one thrifting. In spite of the effect it's had on pop culture, I actually hadn't seen it until now. It was pretty solid. Can't say it's something I'll be itching to watch again any time soon, but it was definitely an interesting watch.
Wonder Woman (Blu-Ray) - Another thrifting get, and another one (believe it or not) I haven't seen in full until now. Pretty excellent all around, from the effectively immersive world design to the action. I think it kinda mishandled it's big bad, but otherwise is pretty flawless. It's kinda wild how many times DC pretty much nailed that first film (MoS, WW, Shazam!, Aquaman), only to somehow completely fumble the followups.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
So Arrow Films continues to scam me out of my money with their insidious scheme of releasing Limited Editions of movies I simply must have. Come Halloween-time, Michael Dougherty's excellent little anthology Trick 'R' Treat gets a deluxe release. I will cry and I will gripe, but deep inside I am happy
@LN78 They're enablers, that's what they are
But, yeah, another great thing about them is that, in addition to their discs having reasonable prices, they offer quite affordable shipping, in stark contrast to most other UK stores shipping to our shores.
So, for me, shopping at Arrow is almost never painful
@FuriousMachine Don't think it is Arrow, but the 4K of Nightmare on Elm Street is also coming soon. That is something I will be looking to add to my collection. I almost bought the box set on blu ray a few years back, but I wasn't sure on the latter films in the series.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@JohnnyShoulder Yeah, I'm a bit on the fence with that. I never got that into the Nightmare films when they came out, though I did watch a bunch of them around a decade ago, but can't really tell them apart. Been meaning to do a marathon with Nightmare, Friday 13th and Halloween to see if any of them need to be on my shelf, but haven't gotten around to it yet
Deadpool & Wolverine (Cinema/3D) - Absolutely hilarious with lots of visceral gory action that really pops in 3D. Trades in plot in favor of being a multiverse cameos & reference fest, but being that it's a Deadpool flick, I don't think that hurts it as much as it would otherwise.
Constantine (Blu-Ray) - Picked this up in a triple pack with Watchmen: Director's Cut & V for Vendetta while thrifting. Don't know much about the comic it's based on, but I thought it was pretty good, albeit it's a genre I'm not personally huge on.
the Last Samurai (Blu-Ray) - One of my favorite films of all time, but I only had it on DVD until now, so when I saw the BD while thrifting I had to grab it. Absolutely still holds up, IMO. I just love a huge epic (whether it be historical fiction like this or the Patriot, or Sci-Fi like the new Dune flicks), and this really hits the spot.

@Malaise I remember liking it, too, though I can't remember a single thing from the movie, so unforgettable it wasn't
The reboot should arrive courtesy of a series on Prime Video written and produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Not sure how far out they are, but last I heard they're looking for the right Lara.
I'm quite a bit drunk and Rebel Moon The Hacky Hack's Cut is on, and apart from it being such a sh** film to start with, it does seem quite a bit different, at least 😂😂
It certainly has a bunch of tits and caved in skulls, but tbh I'm not really concentrating on it any more 😛
Having seen Deadpool & Wolverine twice, it was now time for something new. Two new films, actually, screening in the same theatre with just enough time for a toilet break and a refill of snacks in-between.
First out was M. Night Shyamalan's Trap, which falls in line with the rest of his recent output: A not terrible, but highly mediocre timewaster. It had a few moments (Jody's mom!) and while Hartnett was a bit all over the place, Ariel Donoghue, who played his daughter, was very good. The premise was silly and contrived, but I managed to stay awake and wasn't annoyed when it was finished, so... win?
Second movie was Longlegs and that fared a lot better. Properly creepy and at times uncomfortably tense, this was easily the "scariest" horror movie I've seen this year, with great turns from a great cast. Nicolas Cage will Nicolas Cage, and so he does in this movie as well, though the pretty cool makeup let's him disappear a bit, to the film's benefit. It had a few jump scares and most of them were fully earned, with only one or two cheap ones, I felt.
@LN78 Damn, that sucks! I went in completely blank, knowing only that Cage played a killer. Managed to avoid trailers, too (and it struck me as the trailers rolled in front of "Trap" that it'd be typical if a spoilery trailer for "Longlegs" ran in front of it, but I was spared )
@Zuljaras
Saw it last night as well. Not sure I'd say it's a masterpiece but it is a really fun popcorn flick. Perfect summer time movie. It was a 3D showing too, I don't always go to those but I think this movie benefits from it.
