Haven’t made a ton of progress, but I did get a little more time with the game this weekend between Miles Morales play sessions and real world chores.

So far I actually like the game. I’ve only got my second plasmid and I’m still a bit confused at the story, but I enjoy wandering through the world. It’s quite linear so far, which is a nice change of pace for me. I usually don’t enjoy the first person viewpoint, but for this game series it actually makes sense, since there is this whole mystery of who you really are as the protagonist.

I’m surprised how good the game looks. There’s definitely some inconsistency with occasional muddy textures and variable lighting, but overall it’s hauntingly beautiful.

I've played a lot more, and completed the main storyline. It was fine overall, can't really fault it, but it doesn't quite nail the atmosphere like Bioshock 1 did. I also did a bit of the extra content by trying out the Protector Trials. These involve protecting a little sister that's harvesting Adam, whilst being limited by only having specific pieces of gear. It's a brief bit of fun, but not something I'll spend much time doing.

Has anyone tried out Minerva's Den and know if it's any good? I've been playing the base game on PC, and Minerva's Den is a paid expansion there (it seems to be included for free in the PS4 remastered edition). The Steam reviews appear to be very positive, so I'll probably try it out.

I've played the first 3 levels so far. I liked the first 2 levels because they were quite short and linear. Level 3 opened it up a bit but no where near as much as Bioshock 1. Not sure what to expect from the rest of the game. I sort of finish a level and then have a look at the map of the next level before I turn off the PS4 but it kinda puts me off coming back to the game in some ways.

The big sister is scary but I have beat one now at least. I guess I am going the good route as well as I've saved my first little sister instead of harvesting it.

But yeah, I suspect my opinion will grow to be similar to my opinion of the first game. Bit too scary plus complicated maps make for an anxiety inducing time which I'm not keen to actually pick up and play. I will finish it though, I think just need a solid block of time to plough through it and get past the hump so the endgame is in sight!

@crimsontadpoles did the protector trials have any story in them? It sounded like a horde mode from the description which is something I usually skip in games. I'll probably play Minerva's den when all is said and done though!

@ralphdibny There's not really any story to the Protector Trials. It's basically just a bunch of challenges, where you're required to use specific pieces of gear. Completing them doesn't seem to be too hard so far, but I imagine it'll be very tough to get a good score. It's kinda fun to be forced to try out different plasmids though, as I just used the fun fire one for the entire game.

nessisonett

@ralphdibny Yeah, I feel the same. It’s a game which I’m actively not really wanting to pick up. It’s not a bad game, it’s just not incredibly interesting.

@crimsontadpoles Minerva's Den is incredible, by all means play it!
I still consider it to be one of the best DLCs I've ever played, and perhaps even the best Bioshock experience in general, as it has the improved gameplay of #2, but a way better storyline. Oh, and you can complete it in less than 5 hours, which is why I usually replay that instead of the main games when I get a Bioshock itch to scratch

Omg just realised I totally flopped my spoiler tag there 😅 I'll edit that now

@crimsontadpoles cheers for letting me know! It could be good if it dilutes the essence of the game to a single particular area too. I suspect there will be some plasmids that I don't earn before the end of my play through so might be a good way to try them out

@nessisonett I think I just dread that convoluted map screen and knowing that I will still spend hours exploring it despite not really wanting to 😅

TuckNorris85

I am still on the first Bioshock, about to enter Rapture Central Control which was about halfway through if I remember correctly?

Not sure if I will be on track to get to the second game this month, PX is choosing Mass Effect Legendary Edition as their June game so I might be starting that early.

I've just started level 6. Hoping to bang out a level or 2 this afternoon/evening and then I'll be on the home stretch, hopefully!

I can't help but explore. I don't want to miss out on any of that sweet sweet Adam.

@ralphdibny I love exploring in games in general, I am loving trying to find all the audio recordings, plasmids and weapon upgrade stations in the first Bioshock. Pretty sure I am on track with finding them all, I have got all the ones from areas that get shut off later, I should get my 99th platinum on this.

@TuckNorris85 noice!! I think I missed a few audio recordings in the first BioShock. I did have a fair crack at it but I was still getting used to that style of game. I'm pretty sure I missed one I could have got through telekinesis because I forgot telekinesis was even a thing! 😅

I think I've hit most if not all collectibles in BioShock 2. It helps when my partner is here because she can listen to the audio recordings to get the door unlock codes lol.

Are you doing a good or bad playthrough? I've done good in both games (saving Little Sisters)

Ok I've pushed through and beat the main game! Starting Minerva's Den now. Not sure if I have many thoughts to share to be honest. I probably liked it slightly more than the first game because it was slightly more linear and less confusing but not by much. That said, I can't say I really liked either game and I'll never play either again. Glad I played both all the way through though. I really want to play Infinite as well but I won't get the time before my Plus sub runs out unfortunately. Maybe I'll get to play it if either the game goes on sale or the sub goes on sale again.

nessisonett

@ralphdibny I should really go back and play the rest of it!

I probably won’t finish this weekend, but I think I’ll try and finish it eventually. I like the game, but after 5-6 hours of playtime, it doesn’t have the same appeal to me that the other two games had. The first BioShock was simply a mesmerizing game due to the creepy setting and the radical lore. The third game was better in the gameplay department and had more compelling character arcs and a better traditional story with narrative twists.

This game is solid, and actually better than I expected (I wasn’t expecting much), but lacks the.. je ne sais quoi of the others. It’s easy to attribute that to the fact Ken Levine wasn’t involved with this one, but I’m not sure that’s the entirety of it. When I sit down for a session, it starts to click, but when I’m away from it I don’t hunger to play it, if that makes sense.

I actually do want to see how the story plays out, so we’ll see.

I'm on level 2 of Minerva's Den now. Had a few crashes toward the end of the first level. A bit where I had to fight two fire brutes straight after fighting a Big Sister and a fire brute. It kept crashing in the same place unfortunately. I lost some but not much progress the first time but now I'm using multiple saves... but not too many as I've had this glitch while playing too. I figured the crashes were due to having two security bots and two massive fast moving enemies in a large area that's probably just as I cross a hidden loading point so instead of going fully into that larger area, I decided to lure the two fire brutes into the small corridor that I was in already and managed to get past it without the game crashing.

I know this a bit more of an old school shooter and you can have all your weapons and most of your plasmids available to you for most of the game anyway but I was just wondering what people mainly played with? @crimsontadpoles mentioning their main loadouts has made me curious what other people's were.

In the main game I mainly used electrobolt with the protective tonic, winter blast for basically every big enemy and the odd bit of fire for melting stuff. I mainly used the machine gun with all the ammo types and the shotgun with all ammo types as well as throwing out loads of turrets and trap rivets for big sister fights and Adam gathering. I only really used the other guns if I ran out of ammo on my main guns.

In Minerva's Den, my plasmid loadout is very similar to the main game, electrobolt and winter blast. I am still using turrets but not bothering with trap rivets. Gun-wise, I basically use the laser cannon exclusively.

I also hacked a lot of bots in both main game and the DLC. I did try out all the plasmids in the main game but my go-to plasmids were just the most useful to me. As cool as that bee swarm one was, I just didn't have much use for it.

I am quite liking the quick progression of the DLC. I've only just finished level 1 but I basically have all the guns and most of the tonics and plasmids that I used in the main game.
