@graymamba Glad to hear you're getting your interest in JRPGs back! My appreciation for them remains a fairly recent thing, so I can relate to your deep backlog in terms of them. What's the JRPGs that you currently most look forward to giving a try after having been out of it for a while? I did play Metaphor ReFantazio, which while kickstarting my interest in them, I do feel ran somewhat overly long. I don't know how easily you are distracted or burnt out while playing these longer games, but I'd advise taking it at a slow pace as not to burn yourself out like I did myself!
@Tjuz so I’ve actually only just gotten into them this last year myself… after a few false starts before that. I’m really into Final Fantasy at the moment, so I’m probably looking forward to FFX & X-2 and FFXII: The Zodiac Age the most but am pretty keen to get into the Trails of… series too. Pretty psyched to play most of the so-called classics though tbh old (Suikoden etc.) and new (Clair Obscure: Expedition 33). It’s just finding the time now.
I try to mitigate burnout by spacing out genres etc, so my plan this past year or so has been one pixel FF and one polygon FF per year. I’m seriously considering creating space for a third non-FF jrpg per year though… it’s like pulling teeth deciding what to swap out of the schedule though.
Yesterday I got Disgaea 4 Complete, Resident Evil 1 Director's Cut & Yakuza Kiwami 2 for just over £25
Didn't realise the PS1 classics went on sale so I snagged Resi 1 at only £4. I need to actually beat this version that's haunted me for nearly 30 years now.
I've played Disgaea 4 before but never beat it on PS3. I've tried the demos for 5, 6 & 7 and they've never landed at all like 4 did so finally got round to purchasing the PS4 re-release Dood~!
And thanks to the talks with @graymamba the other day I finally bought Kiwami 2. Not sure when exactly... But soon!
@HallowMoonshadow nice, hope you enjoy. I thought it had a really good narrative and villain(s), so i’ll look forward to hearing your thoughts when you get around to it.
@graymamba The lengths of these games are truly a blessing and a curse! On one hand, it can lead to some incredible, long-term storytelling... and on the other hands, you have no time left for anything else. I've played Metaphor ReFantazio and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition in the last year myself, and those alone took up a good 200 hours of playtime. I think all the survival horror games together I've played in the last year don't even come close to that amount, and I've played a lot more of them!
I've never played any Final Fantasy so far, but I'll be intrigued to hear your thoughts as someone getting into this genre more recently as well in terms of those games and any others! Do let us know how you get along with whatever you decide to play next.
@Bentleyma Happy belated birthday! Coincidentally, I had mine a few days before you on Halloween. Nothing better than having the whole world celebrate your birthday with zombie constumes. So far, I've been impressed with how much the big choices of the episode endings seem to have an effect. I just tried playing through episode 6 now that it's out, but I seem to have gotten a game-breaking bug where I can't get through the dispatch section, so I'll have to wait for a patch annoyingly. But to get back to the choices, I was very surprised to see that a choice like choosing Waterboy for the Z-Team has carried through for each episode. I assumed it was more of a temporary thing and at some point I'd get the opportunity to take Phenomaman, or it was just a one dispatch thing where he'd fill in, but no! There's a whole other part of the game I'm missing with Phenomaman not being in my team, and that's very cool.
@Tjuz I’d definitely suggest you give Final Fantasy a go. It takes a little getting used to but once you acclimate it’s great. I just finished off the platinum on Final Fantasy XIII-2 last weekend and it was another great game (I’ve now played I, VII Remake, XIII, XIII-2, XV and XVI and have enjoyed all of them). You probably know this already but they don’t really follow on from each other (with the exceptions of X & X-2 and XIII, XIII-2 & Lightning Returns) so you can pretty much jump in anywhere… VII Remake would be a pretty good option though.
@HallowMoonshadow almost… I will be playing II early next year as I continue to whittle away at the Pixel Remasters but then Lightning Returns will be my next ‘big’ FF around this time next year. Considering the negativity that surrounds the trilogy, I’ve really enjoyed the first two. I’ve heard that the third is quite different though, so it’ll be interesting to see how they changed up the formula.
I've never played II but I've heard a LOT about it. I'll be quite interested to hear how that goes down with you. I think that that's the one FF that's even more maligned then FF XIII!
