Monster Hunter Wilds - never really been on my radar tbh but was down to £20 at my local CeX and just seemed like a bit of a steal.

@graymamba Glad to hear that VII Remake is probably the best option as an entry point, because that's the one I already own, haha. I got a great deal on the twin pack for that and Rebirth when the latter came to PC early this year, so both games have been sitting in my library unplayed thus far. When I finally free up some time from my other gaming/TV commitments, I'll have to look into playing that next. The fall is usually when I would start up a large JRPG, so the timing is perfect at least!

@Bentleyma Funnily enough I had the same issue, but it turns out it's not actually a bug. I paused the game when I ran into this and googled about some way to bruteforce it, because I didn't want to lose through no fault of my own. Turns out, it's intended to be like that and the combination in question is actually reversed. Where it normally says [READ-ONLY] above the combination on those password spots, it actually says ]YLNO-DAER[ with that one, which was supposed to cue us in that we had to put the password in reversed at the actual node. If I hadn't googled it though, I wouldn't have known either and just assumed it was a bug. At least now you know for when you replay it and possibly if this happens agan in the last two episodes!

Bit late to the discussion but Final Fantasy X is also a good jumping in point @Tjuz especially if you want actual turn based combat but still modern enough to have voice acting and such cus from there on in the series becomes more and more action combat oriented.

@Tjuz I’ll be interested to hear how you get along with the FF series. As mentioned, VII Remake is reasonable place to jump in, or X like Foxy said too. I think for a modern palate that VII R will feel the most intuitive, or XVI. I still have yet to play Rebirth and have it nestled next to a dozen other big games in my pile of shame. 😂

@HallowMoonshadow The tenth entry is another one of those with multiple parts like the 7 Remake, right? Is it one continuous and satisfying story overall, or can both parts be separately enjoyed and the first doesn't necessarily end on a major cliffhanger?

@Th3solution Too many times I have forced you to mention the pile of shame! Let's rebrand it to a pile of opportunities, haha. When you do give Rebirth a shot possibly within the next decade, do let me know! I've heard very differing opinions on it, so I'd be intrigued to hear what you make of it as a fan of Remake. I'll make sure to share my thoughts on that one when I get to it within the next century myself!

Nah you don't have to touch X-2 at all @Tjuz if you don't want to (Though it will be bundled in with X in the HD remasters). X ends very satisfyingly all by itself and I'm 99% sure they didn't make it with a sequel in mind.

Quite a few bounce off X-2 cus of it's cheesey, campy nature and all female cast compared to X's more serious tone.

X-2 was actually my first FF. You miss a lot of context for X (And I wouldn't recommend doing what I did) but it is possible. It actually has my personal favourite combat system of the whole series (That I've played so far).

@Tjuz Lol, I will definitely post thoughts when I dig myself sufficiently out from my pile.

I actually am hoping to not put off Rebirth too long. I’d have a rough goal of getting to it next year. That may be overly optimistic, but I have it on deck with about 10 other games. I usually alternate 1 long main game and 2 shorter games, and it’s probably number 5 or so on the long game list. So… [does some quick math in his head] August 2026? 😅 I don’t know. I made a detailed schedule at the beginning of 2025 and tried to stick with it, and found that I severely overestimated my game time. At this stage of the year I was not only supposed to have completed BG3, but also Forbidden West and Days Gone also. I would be starting Dark Souls 3 right now, had I kept to it. Alas, it seems I’m getting slower and slower at this. I’ve gone from ‘treading water’ to ‘slowly drowning’ on the gaming continuum. 😂

As far as FFX and X-2, I was about to post thoughts but @HallowMoonshadow beat me to it and said exactly what I was going to. I enjoyed the sequel, but it’s completely optional and honestly unnecessary. However, I really enjoyed it and if you like quirky and Japanese stuff, it might be worth checking out if you end up enjoying X.

On a bit of whim, and because it was a really good price, I bought Elden Ring Nightreign. It's the steelbook edition with any upcoming dlc. I bought before last nights state of play annoucement, so had a pleasant surprise this morning.

@HallowMoonshadow @Th3solution Ah, no clue that X-2 was largely separate! My assumptions failed me there. That's very good to know, since it'll be way less of a commitment to try X when I know I don't necessarily need to follow through into X-2 for the full story. I actually am not too turned off by the sounds of the campy tone and all-female cast, since generally I prefer female characters in the first place and I love camp enough that I'm the person who will sing the Chucky movies/series praises! I understand what's understood under camp might be a bit different with a Japanese team however.

@Th3solution I'm impressed you even manage to schedule your gaming out so specifically! I'm way more of an impulsive gamer myself, so when I decide to start a new game, it's usually just whatever speaks to me the most in that moment. I do try to space out long and short games like yourself however!

Well, if five games should bring you to about August 2026 in terms of finishing and you're only three long games behind this year, I'd say you still did a pretty good job! There's an alternate reality version of you right know talking all kinds of naughty things about Karlach. Sadly time comes for us all and holds no hostages... Who knows what place you´ll be in next year and whether you´ll have been able to carve out more gaming time?

@JohnnyShoulder That's one heck of a pretty steelbook! Nicely done!

This might sound like bragging (with apologies in advance) but my last PS5 purchase was actually a PS5, specifically the Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition. My OG console's disc drive was starting to show its age and, as somebody who prefers to support physical media whenever possible, I figured upgrading to a PS5 with a removable disc drive would be a smart way to future-proof the hardware.

And I gotta say, the Ghost of Yōtei DualSense is incredibly comfortable. I was surprised to find that the decorative "slash marks" had been actually cut into its surface, even across the touchpad, but they make its texture really grippy and satisfying to hold.

First time I've had a fancy console since my Satin Silver PS2 back in the day. Darn, I loved that thing.

Just beat Ghaost of Yotei, and a NG+ run through on Ghost of Tsushima, to finally get the platinum. Picked up Jedi Survivor for dirt cheap, and now have a half dozen games to pick for the next one. Will it be Survivor, RE7, RE Village, Cyberounk 2077, Metaphor:Refantazio or every Uncharted game?

Not quite Black Friday but had a couple of bargains today:

Mafia: The Old Country

Lost Soul Aside

… both for just under £60.00! Fancied the latest Mafia since it’s release and tbh, while LSA seemed a sizeable disappointment at release (in terms of reviews/reactions), I’ve actually heard surprisingly positive things about it during the odd podcast the last couple of months.

@Othatguy Putting my vote in for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard! Only played it myself a few months ago, and you're only slightly late to spooky season. It's not my favourite of the franchise, but a great place to start. Definitely need to play it before tackling Village at the very least, as that directly follows the events of 7!

Just picked up a steelbook version of Hell is Us in the Black Friday sale.

@graymamba Those are 3 really solid recent releases to get on sale, all of which have received a smattering of positive reviews. Like you mentioned, LSA is probably the most divisive, but there’s something intriguing about it and I think it probably has been improved technically with post launch patches.

The other two are squarely on my radar but I need to play the other Mafia games first to see if I like the franchise. And HiU sounds like a really unique and creative game, and seems like one of those games that will appeal to a gamer who wants to try something new.

I’ll be curious to read your impressions when you get around to them in 2030. 😁

@Th3solution 2030!?!?… you obviously have absolutely no idea about the state of my backlog! Add another 5 years to that and we might be getting somewhere 😉

Th3solution

@graymamba I’m not far behind, my friend. I plan to finally get around to some of these games when I’m bedridden from end stage arthritis in the old folks home.

Othatguy

@Tjuz My backlog grows by the week, lol. The backwards compatibility thing has resulted in a major jam.

Othatguy

graymamba

@Th3solution fingers crossed (if you’re still able that is 😅) that the old arthritis doesn’t extend to your hands! 😉

As an aside, and please don’t think that I’m looking for sympathy or anything… but I do seem to have been hit with the arthritic-stick. Already dealing with it in a number of areas and I’m ‘only’ 46. Just this past few months I’ve been concerned that it’s now effecting my hands. Roll-on the neural-interface ✌️ (that’s my attempt at crossing my fingers btw 😉)

@graymamba That Hell is Us steelbook is a nice find! I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for a physical copy of any kind but haven’t had any luck yet.
