@Th3solution yeah I’m in no rush to play either myself (particularly not Veilguard as I wasn’t to play through the previous three first) but at under £30 each, I just couldn’t say no really.
… and yeah I already think I’ll be picking up Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 at release. Something @Ravix said a few weeks ago struck a bit of a chord with me. In this era of the industry seemingly crumbling before our eyes (a minor exaggeration) we really should be buying the games that excites as gamers at full price to do our admittedly small part in fully-funding the facets of the gaming we individually get the most from.
@graymamba I straddle a fine line of trying to support games and devs I like by buying at release vs. trying to keep my backlog controlled and keeping a reasonable personal budget. I do agree with you and Rav though and have typically tried to throw support behind the smaller projects and studios that I think might need it more, having bought at release the likes of Dreams, Concrete Genie, and Gravity Rush 2. 😂 But clearly my support didn’t help enough. For the big blockbuster titles I’m less prone to throw support behind them if I figure they will sell just fine on their own, and I’ll often wait for the inevitable discounts, unless I plan to play them immediately.
I used to be better about getting games at launch but I am at a place in my gaming where I have just been buying 2-3 new releases per year and getting about another 4-6 older releases for cheaper. My most recent launch window purchases have been Spidey 2, FFXVI, Balatro, Hogwarts Legacy, GT7 and I played them all at release. The only recent launch purchase I’ve made and didn’t play right away (and still haven’t 😅) is Baldur’s Gate 3.
Honestly, I do miss the days where I’d pre-order a physical copy of a game from GameStop and pick it up at a midnight launch event and it would usually come with a pre-order bonus, be it an exclusive skin or weapon, some gaming merch or a special steelbook cover.
The move toward digital, along with the general explosion of the number of game releases has extinguished the launch event type of hype. Also, the fact that games release in broken states and are often not really ready for full enjoyment until a couple months after launch.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
I went a bit crazy this year so far with purchases...
Last year I made a resolution to not buy ANY games at all and actually stuck to it!
So far this year I've bought -
Space Marine 2
Silent Hill 2 remake
System Shock
Hitman 3/WOA
XII remake
Devil May Cry HD collection
Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition
Devil May Cry Special Edition
DMC reboot
Trepang2
Little Nightmares Complete Edition (actually forgot I'd bought this one!)
I have made £70 back from selling games as well and got £20 off a purchase for using PayPal credit so I think I haven't actually spent too much!
Eternal Strands - had an absolute blast with this. Mike Laidlaws' (ex Bioware) latest game. It's not a AAA open world but definitely a high quality AA. With Dishonored vibes gxf wise and hints of Shadow of the Colossus, well maybe more than a hint . It's really quite an amazing new IP from a freshly baked studio.
@graymamba Moons of Madness is a surprisingly good cosmic horror game with a decent story and is only a few hours long, well worth a playthrough, an easy Plat too.
If you don't like it, don't play it, and shut yo damn mouth
@graymamba I quite enjoyed Pacific Drive. A really cool atmosphere and interesting central storyline but the mechanic of having your car almost as a character itself is neatly done.
The trophy list isn’t too hard but gets a little grindy trying to get all the resources for upgrades, especially when some only appear in the late stages of the game and the fact you always have to start from the beginning on a run.
Just try not to do what I did and insist on exploring every building you come across and be more selective about what resources you need to find on a run.
Picked up Solasta on sale. I missed it's ps5 release last year and knew nothing of the game even though it's a few years old. It's an Isometric D&D 5th edition game in it's own world. It's a poor man's Baldurs Gate 3. I'm having a blast with it so far. It's story is quite weak, but the combat is great. It looks aged but not terrible. I bought all the dlc as some classes were locked behind that, but those were on sale too. Ill see if it holds my interest throughout. So far I'd recommend it to any isometric fan that likes combat focus or fans of D&D 5th edition rule set.
