@colonelkilgore I played TLOU last year before getting to the second game and was surprised at how little of it actually remembered. The DLC is really good too which I never played back on the PS3.
@Thrillho yeah I’m really looking forward to it as although I wasn’t blown away by it as a game, I remember thinking the story and characters were brilliant. From what I’ve seen of the sequel, the actual gameplay looks to have caught up too.
@velio84 Hi, yeah I totally agree about The Last of Us Part II. It's just an amazing game and emphasis on game. Despite all the fuss over the story and some of the characters, it is still very much a game. The gameplay is much improved from the first title and also Uncharted and yes, the level design is fantastic. The quality sound design and emotional score just adds to the overall package. A special special game....
But, four hours in, I'd say the same thing about Final Fantasy VII. I appreciate JRPGs aren't for everyone but this doesnt even have turn-based combat, real time with the ability to freeze the action and go tactical as well as swap between party members. Yes there's a lot of information and tutorials thrown at you in the early parts of the story but this is necessary of course.
I'm charmed by the characters, really like the story and being in control of a cynical Merc isn't that far removed from a grizzled Witcher. The graphics are good and the music is just sublime. Maybe it will never 'click' with you (see what I did there 😉) but don't give up. Take your time, read some guides online, listen to the score during off time, do something to allow it to get under your skin.
I'm only 4-5 hours in but so far it's the best new game I've played in a long time, probably since The Last of Us Part last summer. If we discount gameplay loops that I'm familiar with than it would be since Persona 5 last March.
On Chapter 4 now and this game continues to just get better. The characters are just brilliant fun to be around and I can tell Cloud is starting to warm to them as well.
😉
I'm starting to get to grips with all the materia and equipment add ons and stuff, the combat is pretty darned great as well. Just played a bit of darts although they got that wrong, need to check out on a double or bull. Maybe they have different rules in Japan!
I put over 100h into Final Fantasy 7 Remake last year (got the platinum, which includes doing the game on hard mode and then some), which is the only reason I'm not playing it now... I will probably revisit it sometime this year still
I wanna do the Yuffie chapter but I kinda wanna do the PS5 version of the main game again first. Maybe not twice this time
@Col_McCafferty Whatever. You just like looking at Tifa's butt... Seriously though, it is indeed a pretty good group of characters. Obviously I would think so since this is the second time I'm playing it. Of course I love the game itself, but if the characters weren't so good, I don't know if I would be playing it yet again. Or at least not enjoying it as much as I am once again.
Off topic, but the Mutual Game tracker on PSN on the PS5 is a mess. I'm guessing it works better if you've had the person on your friends list prior to the PS5, but it shows us playing only 2 games mutually even though I looked at your list of games and we have a ton. Not a big deal, but a thing I noticed after you accepted my friends request today.
@Voltan Yeah, I'm thinking 3 times might be enough... unless you really want another platinum.
@KilloWertz I do recommend playing the hard mode though. The 2 small-ish changes it makes to combat make you play it in a whole different way and I found it to be a really fun challenge.
@Voltan one of the most difficult plats I've got. Hard mode was no joke... I am an FF noob, so had to get my head around materia etc which might account for my struggles but yeah, I found it genuinely tough.

I’m glad it wasn’t me who had to say this again. Completely changes the way you approach battles and definitely for the better.
@Voltan You are undoubtedly right, but I won't be doing that. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with playing hard mode in games, but I already know that won't be for me. I have skipped Returnal so far because I know it will just frustrate me too much, and hard mode in games usually does that as well.
Obviously I don't have very many platinums...

@KilloWertz Fair enough - so just so you know what you'll be missing: hard mode changes 2 things in the game: you can't use items at all and your MP don't regenerate when you rest. This means you have to manage your loadouts to rely more on abilities that don't use MP, have abilities that allow you to regenerate MP if possible, and always have healing spells equipped. Enemies are also stronger (but you keep all your upgrades from the first playthrough) so you'll often need to have to change loadouts for specific fights - to get protected from a specific element and/or exploit enemy weaknesses.
It made the game even more engaging for me - but I get that it's not for everyone
@KilloWertz In addition to the above, I also found you could get through most of normal difficulty without having to change characters too much but hard mode really forces you to do so and get the most out of their attacks/limit breaks.
@Kidfried It’s cool to hear someone actually playing it! I saw Shuhei Yoshida posting loads of stuff about it on Twitter and it didn’t quite look like my thing but seemed quite neat.
@Kidfried I definitely need to play Chicory but lately whenever I power up the PS5, I just go straight to Guilty Gear so I refrained from buying any games for the moment
It'll probably stay that way at least until Hades.
Currently going through 1-up mode on Doom Eternal (PS5 version) as I already have the platinum for the PS4 version. Next up, Resident Evil 3 Remake (which I suppose qualifies more so as a PS4 game?)
In all seriousness, and this isn't knocking people who like to play hard modes and/or really hard games, but that's not for me. I prefer just to sit back and enjoy the game/story rather than worry about a big challenge or platinum trophies.
That is a big reason why I actually played a decent portion of the remake the first time on Easy. Well, once I reached the Hell House (I think that's it) part of the game and then on. It'd did make the combat too easy eventually, but I left it just to enjoy the story. I plan on leaving it on Normal this time through though besides beating Hell House.
