I have never played an Oddworld game before. I’m guessing it’s fine to jump in right away with Soulstorm, correct? I have New ‘n’ Tasty by virtue of PS Plus a long time ago, but never got around to it.
Hearing about the difficultly makes me a little reluctant to play the series. I’m not a platformer connoisseur by any stretch.

@Th3solution This is definitely more of a puzzle game than a platformer. The difficulty is in figuring out patterns and timing and getting punished for getting it wrong, rather than requiring precision and reflexes.

@Voltan Ah... I see. Thanks for the clarification. I might get along better with it than I thought then.

I’m kinda surprised we don’t have a PushSquare review yet.

@Th3solution The other thing is that the trickiest bits are often hidden areas that have extra mudokens to rescue. Saving them all isn't essential but there are normally different endings for not saving many, saving most, and saving them all.

New 'n' Tasty was made easier by not having insta-kill on everything but also giving you multiple items (rocks, grenades etc) rather than just one at a time like the original. And as I said earlier, not having each screen load individually also makes things easier as you're less likely to run into a mine you're not expecting, can see jumps coming etc.

I'd still recommend New 'n' Tasty as the story of Soulstorm continues from it but it isn't essential.

@Th3solution The game only came out on Tuesday, give em a chance!

Slowly making my way through Soulstorm (which is NOT a 4/10 game) - I'm usually not that bad at checking every corner in a game but I have no idea where some of the secrets areas are in this one or how to access some others. I doubt I'll get the good ending - I'd probably have to play once more with a walkthrough (maybe I will, another time).
Also worked on a few trophies in MK11 while it's between Kombat League seasons. 90% done now.

@Voltan I used a guide with New ‘n’ Tasty as a heads up for hidden areas. Some were just silly like jumping into pits that should kill you or ledges that you would almost never find by yourself.

I played about an hour of Oddworld Soulstorm. I then deleted it. Not for me.

Socks before or after trousers, but never socks before pants, that's the rule. Makes a man look scary, like a chicken.

Black Lives Matter. Enough is enough.

Lol, I just passed a Cash Generator on the way back from the doctors and saw Godfall in the window. It's not a game I particularly fancy but I thought it'd probably be cheap as it was second hand. I thought wrong, £89.99! Needless to say, I didn't buy it.

I'm playing Disco Elysium which is pretty good.

After that I'm probably going to go back to Demon's Souls or chasing the platinum in Hitman III. I was at a really annoying bit of Demon's Souls so probably Hitman. Or Maneater, actually. I totally forgot I started that the other day until I was writing this.

@johncalmc Man, I tried Maneater and after about an hour I just wasn’t impressed.
If it wasn’t one of the few PS5 games I have then I would have never even lasted that long with it. To me it didn’t look or play particularly next gen. In fact the colors looked awful and I thought maybe it was my HDR settings or something but the other games look fine. The gameplay was just not appealing either. Hopefully you’ll get along with it alright though.

@Th3solution @johncalmc it’s just an upscaled PS4 game at the end of the day, so I’m not expecting PS5 levels of graphical fidelity when I get around to playing it Maneater. I won’t be expecting a great deal from the game but the little bits I have seen of it seem amusing at the very least. Don’t really game for the comedy but I might find it a decent change of pace.

@Th3solution @colonelkilgore I actually like Maneater quite a bit. It's the sort of game I'm glad I don't have to review because how much I like it is probably not aligned with how good it actually is. Because it's clearly rubbish. But it's entertaining rubbish. It's like trying to review Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger or something. It's a mindless shark chomping game that requires no real skill and I don't have to think about at all but will amuse me for a short amount of time.

@colonelkilgore Yeah, in my (admittedly very limited) time with it, the dissonance of the comedy and the flesh-eating maiming violent horror was kind of off-putting. People screaming in sheer terror as you rip their limbs off, juxtaposed with goofy attempts at humor in the story dialogue.

And to be fair, I’ve never been particularly fond of underwater swimming in games in general - it always feels too floaty and imprecise. So a whole game playing as a shark is probably not for me anyways, even though it controls about as well as can be expected. And yes, it does just look like a PS4 game to me and the haptics are half-baked. Of course I could have been spoiled by Astrobot. In fact, I’m fairly certain Astrobot set the bar so high that it might have done a disservice to PS5 games. Here’s hoping 🤞🏼 that Returnal makes good use of the DualSense haptics and the SSD. Also Demon’s Souls is apparently really good with it too. Gotta get around to both of those.

@TraCuz- Yeah, did the colors and graphics look kinda weird to you? The people’s skin tone all looked really red and the color saturation was awful. I’m still new to my PS5 so I’m not sure I have the settings done very well.

TraCuz-

Over the last 2 weeks or so I've gotten into FF14 so I was happy to be able to see the changes first hand in the PS5 beta that released this week. The resolution and performance upgrades are very nice and welcomed. One of my favorite changes being the load times! Significantly reduced, makes the experience really seamless. One of the reasons I think this game clicked with me is the immersion and they improved it with the Dualsense implementation. I don't think they implemented the adaptive triggers but the subtle use of haptic feedback is great. The haptics are mainly used for traversal as that is a core aspect of the game. Each surface you walk on feels different, each mount feels different while running or flying, and haptic feedback when crafting/gathering all really add up to increasing the immersion. Another nice little thing I noticed was while I was in menus sorting out some gear another player ran by me and I felt their footsteps in the haptics. It was stronger the closer they were and as they gained distance the haptics felt weaker. Once again these are subtle uses but add to the experience and gets me excited for future Dualsense implementation.

@johncalmc @Th3solution @colonelkilgore Yeah I really enjoyed my time with Maneater. It did take me a while to get used to the controls though. I loved the humour and all the Easter eggs throughout the game. It probably came at an ideal time for, as I had just suck 140 odd hours into Cyberpunk, so was a nice palette cleanser. It is a mid budget game so people should set their expectations accordingly, but at the same can see why people didn't like it.

Trying to figure out some Noob Saibot combos without looking anything up on the interwebz (because it's fun).
