Ok I've had a PS5 since December and have played enough games to have a top 5, though disclaimer: I am fully aware that these are not the top 5 PS5 games - in fact won't even be in the top 5 PS5 games that I own (I don't know why I save the good stuff till last, I just do!). So my faves so far:

1. Hades
2. Spider-Man: Miles Morales
3. Astros Playroom
4. Lost in Random
5. A Plague Tale: Innocence

For anyone wondering games I own currently not played include Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, Returnal, Resident Evil Village & Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Don't think I have actually posted my top 5 as yet. So here we go.

1. Elden Ring
2. Returnal
3. Resident Evil 8
4. Spider-man Miles Morales
5. Demon's Souls

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

All these pretty, billion-dollar Sony blockbusters crowding top five lists. I want to believe someone out there paid $500 or more for a next-gen console, and the first thing they booted up on it was Life of Black Tiger.

The world is waiting with baited breath for the next-gen patch for this masterpiece.

Can't remember throwing my hat in the ring so here it goes...

1) Returnal (I would have still ranked this as #1, even before addition of 'suspend' feature and incredible DLC!)
2) Elden Ring
3) Ghost of Tsushima Director Cut (especially Iki Island, which is another great DLC)
4) Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 Remake
5) Demon's Souls / FFVII Intergrade (both games quite flawed in a few ways, albeit enjoyable... )

EDIT: Hades is an honorable mention, and would have definitely made this ranking - albeit I played it on Nintendo Switch, so felt it was 'cheating' to add it!

I'll bite the bullet and put my name to a top 5 so far!
1) Elden ring
2) Astros playroom
3) Returnal
4) Spiderman Miles morales
5) Control ultimate edition

Still to try Horizon, resi 8 and finish demon souls and hitman 3 but my top 2 feels pretty firm. Astro may be right up there with wii sports as the best pack in game ever!

@velio84 Deathloop is one that I can’t quite figure out if I want to try. I have an aversion to first person shooters in general, but every now and then I like one (Titanfall 2, Borderlands, Doom) but nothing about Deathloop seemed exciting to me. The game seems divisive. What did you like about it?

@velio84 That’s helpful, thanks. I didn’t like the first Dishonored. The game is pretty cheap to pick up in the $25 range preowned, so it just caught my eye briefly, but I reckon it’s not for me even with the acclaim it’s received. Good point that it will likely never be on PS+.

1. Wreckfest
2. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
3. Ghost of Tsushima
4. Dirt 5
5. Godfall

I don't have many PS5 games yet, so these are the only ones that I've been able to get into. I do have Returnal and Sackboy, but I haven't been able to get into them yet. Also, used to have Hitman 3 and MLB the Show 2021, but traded those in.

1. Elden Ring
One of the best games I’ve ever played.
2. The Pathless
An absolute gem that gets miles out of simple mechanics and has an outstanding OST. Also has the most enjoyable platinum trophy I’ve obtained.
3. Returnal
Simply the best shooter I’ve played.
4. Astro’s Playroom
A love letter to any PlayStation fan and the exceedingly rare flawless game.
5. Resident Evil 8
Surprisingly my favourite RE game and one that keeps calling me for another play through. One day!
5. Psychonauts 2
Thrives on sheer creativity and a truly heartfelt story. A real pleasure of a game and I can’t choose between it and RE.

Nioh Collection, Ghost of Tsushima and Demon’s Souls could probably bump a couple of these off the list but I only included games that I exclusively played on PS5 and avoided remakes/re-releases.

@Jimmer-jammer Thanks for the share!

I'm about to kick off the Nioh Collection this weekend, needing something to fill the ER-shaped hole in my life since attaining the platinum ha!

I loved Returnal also, as well as enjoying my time with Ghost & DeS.

Glad to see Nioh among your comments, as I was unsure about buying it due to the perceived difficulty curve and intricate mechanics... hopefully I survive! (NB. Resi 8 is an absolute scream, love the camp horror style so much fun)

@CJD87 Thanks for reading! Really hope Nioh goes well for you. As good as the first one is, I think Nioh 2 is a huge step up in pretty much every area, I absolutely love it. Wacky story, great visuals and music, excellent enemy variety and level design and that sweet, sweet combat system…it’s a blast. If you’ve platinumed Elden Ring, I think you’ll be just fine!

I’ve amended my list slightly to include Psychonauts 2 as I really can’t pick between it and RE for spot 5. Cheers!

@Jimmer-jammer Cheers man!

I've been researching a bit, and there seems to be a consistent theme among fans that (as you point out) Nioh 2 is vastly superior in every way.... BUT, it is apparently prudent I begin with Nioh 1 to get a more 'gentle' introduction to the convoluted mechanics?

Kicked it off briefly last night, just rolling through the tutorial. Menus and weapons/armor/equip load etc seem to borrow quite heavily from FromSoftware? Also you have 'Ki' system (aka stamina).

I'm assuming that similar to FS games you should look to min/max stats and focus on pumping stats into 1-2 items as opposed to levelling up all attributes?

Looks to be fun so far, I just really hope the systems dont become too overwhelming!

What I love about Returnal (and Sekiro to some extent) is that they are very much 'pick up and play' without worrying too much about build administration/housekeeping. Saying that though, I had a blast in Elden Ring working towards specific builds!

@CJD87 like @velio84, I’ve only played Nioh so far but have Nioh 2 (& the Nioh Collection on PS5) and plan on plat’n the original again and the sequel twice as a result at some point.

I too have heard that the sequel is the better game… but don’t let that make you sleep on the original, it’s a brilliant game. A lot of people sight the combat of the Nioh games as the best of the whole souls-like genre… I’d probably still place Bloodborne’s combat above it but there’s no denying how fantastic it is. It falls down a little bit in terms of level design, aesthetic and enemy variety but is still an absolute joy.

**** DLC!

CJD87

@velio84 Yeah, so far so good - and I can tell that this will likely provide me the masochistic challenge I crave! I’m going to give it a few days or so and if it ‘clicks’ then I’ll definitely push ahead!

@colonelkilgore Yes so far I can tell that it falls down slightly (vs FS games) in terms of ‘ambience’ and atmosphere…. Something that FS accomplishes immaculately in all their games. But I must say I’m enjoying the faster paced combat, alongside similar FS-esque RPG elements etc
Haha of course Nioh 1 was on your extension platinum list… how rough/difficult was the plat? I’m basically using Nioh 1 as a gateway drug to prepare me for Nioh 2… but I’m loving N1 so far!

@CJD87 it wasn’t too bad mate… long but no more difficult than your average souls game. Think it took over 100 hours if irc. My top 3 tips for you would be kusarigama, kusarigama, kusarigama. One of the most fun melee weapons I’ve used in any game.

**** DLC!

Jimmer-jammer

@CJD87 as @velio pointed out, the ki pulse is…key! It actually functions similarly to the reload mechanic from Returnal. The ki swirling around the player’s body acts as a visual cue for when to hit the button, though I always found keeping an eye on the stamina gauge to be easiest. Don’t worry, you’ll find your rhythm! There are a lot of mechanics and it can all be a little overwhelming at first but it does come together. To me, the most overwhelming aspect is the loot system. You will collect a LOT of loot, and I suggest developing a system for yourself to efficiently triage your way through it as soon as possible. Don’t get too attached to anything, as there is almost always a better version of it around the corner.

As @colonelkilgore was saying, Nioh 1 is well worth playing through, and I hope I didn’t give the impression that it’s not. Nioh 2 is just such an improvement on every aspect that it’s hard to go back, so to speak. Nioh 1’s boss fights are a highlight, but as stated, enemy variety and level assets do start to contribute to a general feeling of sameness. This is addressed and then some in the sequel, but the biggest and best change is the player being half yokai and all that entails; it’s a real game changer. The combat encounters are so much more dynamic. It’s action gaming bliss once you get into the swing of things.

@Jimmer-jammer glad to hear that the enemy variety and level creativity has been addressed in the sequel, hopefully I’ll be starting it next year. There are so many souls-likes on the horizon that I’m thinking of upping my consumption to 3 per year.

**** DLC!

CJD87

@Jimmer-jammer Wow the level and depth of mechanics (not to mention the loot!) is extensive to say the least. Getting hammered, but enjoying the learning process! Thanks for the tips man, will keep you posted on progress

@colonelkilgore yeah it’s crazy! I just saw that Salt and Sacrifice was releasing soon, a game that I had completely forgotten about but am super excited to play. There’s really no end in sight. As for enemy variety, they really did knock it out of the park.

As an aside, I know you’re trying to collect a bunch of plats in short order here, I was gonna suggest 3 quick and easy ones I’ve earned that also happen to be attached to pretty good little games. Omno, Hoa and Milo’s Quest. You could easily bag all 3 plats in 10-15 hours.

Jimmer-jammer

@CJD87 looking forward to it! I still have to get back to the DLC for Nioh 2, who knows, I might jump in around the same time you get there!

Edit: oh, and if you’re having trouble, seek out the sloth talisman. It can be very helpful!
