@Kidfried Same here. Since I've had a backlog for years, I've mostly only played the really major titles right when they came out and then got to others as I could. It was kind of annoying in a sense since I always felt like I was behind on so many titles people had already played. It's good in a way to have titles like that still to play, but it would be well after most others have played it, so obviously being able to discuss them was out the window.

I've only played your final two so far along with Miles Morales (Control last gen so far). I had no idea Chicory even existed, so I might check that out at some point. Not sure if the extremely slow pace of Disco Elysium would be for me though.

I'll try to come up with a Top 5 when I have more time.

@Kidfried good to see another Disco fan! 🕺🏻

Hopefully your play through isn’t worrying you too much any more after a previous post of yours on the forum.

@Thrillho Yea, sorry, I remember now I never responded to your post. I can be terrible at stuff like that!

Uncharted2007

I'm honestly not too impressed with PS5's first year but I'm usually not impressed by launch years.

My top 5 PS5 games thus far:

  • Astro's Playroom (pre-installed)
  • AC Valhalla (launch game bought)
  • Destruction Allstars (PS+)
  • Oddworld Soulstorm (PS+)
  • Judgment (have yet to play)

Wish list:

  • Hitman 3
  • MK11 Ultimate
  • Kena
  • Horizon 2
  • God of War 2

@velio84
Nioh remastered - are you referring to Nioh1 or Nioh2?

I ask because I have Nioh2 in the backlog, which I currently have prioritised to playing AFTER DeS.
(Currently Returnal, just completed Act1... then will move to Kena - -> DeS - -> Nioh2)

What is it that ranks Nioh above DeS and Returnal out of interest? I'm not contesting this btw, more interested from a backlog POV.. and if I need to bump Nioh before DeS!

@velio84 Cool mate cheers... might be ambitious to line up Nioh before Elden Ring comes out (considering I have Kena and DeS next) but will do my best, I'm sold!

@velio84 - will bear that in mind mate, last thing I want is Souls burnout prior to ER dropping.

Depending on timings, I might play something like Village if I have a week or so to kill prior to ER

Ha and yeh I heard Kena has some challenging difficulty spikes! But the idea of a short game is quite appealing. (I’ll also have MDread on the side when travelling)

@CJD87 some of Kena's boss battles are almost souls-like but it's not like the whole game has that vibe. There's plenty of chill exploration and puzzles in between. Also dying will just set you back to before the fight so it's really not that kind of experience overall.

@Telekill it's been very underwhelming hasn't it. Last Christmas was such a cynical cash in when they should have saved the launch window for this Christmas. I loved Astro's Playroom though. Not sure there are even 5 actual PS5 games are there? Astro, Returnal, Destruction Allstars....? Everything else is last gen.

@BowTiesAreCool For the sake of accuracy - Ratchet & Clank is another one.
I'm now trying to think of any 3rd party games that aren't cross gen and can only think of The Medium, which isn't that great apparently. Godfall used to be another one lol. I'm sure I'm missing something.
That said, I thought it was a very good year myself. I don't really care if games are cross-gen if they run great on PS5 and most importantly just are fun.

Voltan

BowTiesAreCool

@Voltan of course! That's actually the one I'm willing to pay money for when it eventually comes down to less than fifty quid.

Yeah that's it, it's mainly been a PS4 machine but a faster, quiet version (which is no bad thing)

BowTiesAreCool

Elodin

1. Returnal (Game of the Year)
2. Demons Souls
3. Spider-Man
4.Control
5. Rachet & Clank (I didn't finish so possibly higher on my list, however I seem to be less interested in platformers lately. )

Voltan

@velio84 Of course, that's the one
I haven't played it yet but I'm interested.

Uncharted2007

@BowTiesAreCool Yeah, I also don't have much time to actually game these days. I'm about 18 hours into Judgment on PS5 and enjoying it. Apparently I'm half done with the game and I misjudged (no pun intended) it both in game length and what to expect. So that and Mass Effect Legendary Edition (both ports) are running for my personal GotY... but Mass Effect will win. 😉

@BowTiesAreCool It is the norm for the first year of any console to be light on next gen only games. The pandemic has had a big effect on most developers, so we need to be mindful of that too.

@Voltan And Demon's Souls which I don't think anyone has mentioned.

@JohnnyShoulder I think the idea was that Demon’s Souls is in many ways pretty much the same game it was on PS3, that’s why it wasn’t mentioned. But yeah, fair point.

1) Resident Evil 8
2) Death Stranding Directors Cut
3) Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut
4) Demon Souls
5) Plague Tail Innocences

I know both Death Stranding, Plague Tail and Ghosts were first launched on the PS4 but I never got the chance to play them untill I picked up the PS5. Resident Evil 8 is just fantastic. More action horror than survival but it's solid entry. Makes you care for Ethan in a ways RE7 didn't. Ghosts is solid open world comfort food. Walking aimlessly is Death Stranding is boring yet wonderful at the same time. Love the story it tells. Demon Souls is great and extremely frustrating in the best possible way lol I still need to beat it currently stuck in the catacombs on the cliff side with the flying manta ray things. Plague was a freebie given out in PS Plus and it's wonderful! I was honestly shocked how much I ended up enjoying it. It's like a lite version of the Last of Us and I can't wait for the sequel.

@OMG_Waffles If you equip the Thief's Ring in Demon’s Souls, those flying Mantra Ray things won't notice you as much. Makes that section much more bearable.

Godfall
Astros Playroom
Slay the Spire
PGA Golf 2021
PES 2021 season update

Hopefully gonna grab Miles Morales and GoT at Christmas ☃️

Strangely I loved Disco Elysium and it should be in my top 5 easily. However I'm in a soft lock situation as one of my stats is too low to pass the skill check and it's stopping me progressing. I never knew that could happen and is really disappointing in an RPG which is 'open ended'. I was going for a clever goodey two shoes so didn't need Authority and left it to rot. Now I need it to pass a skill check oh well.

@velio84 Funny you should mention that, because I love replaying games, and yet an increasing number of recent releases have fallen into the "one and done" category for me, at least for the time being. Back when I first got my PS4, I'd finish big games like Arkham Knight or Uncharted 4 and immediately start second playthroughs the day after I'd seen the credits roll.

I've only done that with one PS5 game this past year, and it's unsurprisingly taken my top spot. Now that I've actually played more than five eligible games, I can make a list.

1) Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
2) Horizon: Forbidden West
3) LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
4) Hitman III
5) Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut
