@Miserydhala my in game timer showed 11 hours but according to my PS5 I had played 16 by the time I rolled the credits and this is as someone who's been playing these since 1996, they're also designed around replayability.
As for the RT, yes it has been turned off for much of the Raccoon City area (not all and I don't know why) but I'll be honest, I didn't immediately notice upon replaying and there were some areas with really bad shimmering with it on. It's still on in the care home and the last area both of which I'd argue are far more impactful with it on.
I'm a huge fan of the series and after 3 play throughs I'd certainly put it amongst the best in the series, certainly the best "new" entry since RE4 back on Gamecube
Finally bought the game and been playing for the last few hours. It’s been great so far. Still early doors but just got to the first Grace and Leon meeting.
The game looks absolutely brilliant even on my semi-old TV so I can’t imagine how much better it looks on a brand new screen. Grace’s sections have been top notch so far and Leon’s bringing all the nostalgia. I’m all for it!

@Kairuuu I think RE9 proves Capcom are one of the best studios out there, as many people have said online the game just looks amazing on any platform, yes I had two slip ups with Dragon's Dogma and Monster Hunter Wilds, But from the demo of Pragmata I played that will also have amazing performance and I have no doubt Onimusha will be the same.

@Oram77 Yeah, it’s a proper looker alright. I reckon it looks amazing when playing it in handheld mode on Switch 2 even.
Very impressed with it so far!
"A corpse, should be left well alone. Oh, I know very well how the secrets beckon so sweetly. Only an honest death will cure you now. Liberate you from your wild curiosity."
@Oram77 I like that something like this was included. I've no issues with the subtle changes to the lore to accommodate this and Requiem's story. Plus it's nice to have one reference to bring people up to speed and to remind even people like me, about some of the events
Older than I care to remember but have been gaming since owning a wooden Atari 2600 and played pretty much everything inbetween.
@carlos82 Yeah I think they have done a really good of consolidating the overreaching story and making it easy to understand for new players in one file, there are still messy parts of lore like what is the canon ending for 1 and 2 and now bringing in Raccoon City Syndrome
Basically just copy and pasting from NintendoLife but I figured I’d share here also.
Just rolled credits. Absolutely fantastic game. I think it’s the best Resident Evil game since RE4.
Really enjoyed playing as both Grace and Leon as I thought the changes of pace throughout the story kept things really fresh and it was great going from being stealthy and timid with Grace to being an absolute zombie killing demon with Leon.
There were a few parts I thought were a little tough. I found the section with the elite commanders really difficult but I think part of that came down to me only having one med injector and not so much ammo.
Also, the part in the orphanage with the children really freaked me out.

@Metonymy As promised, I'm leaving my Resident Evil: Requiem thoughts in here. I really, really enjoyed it. I thought the whole divide between first-person and third-person as well as the differing styles of game-play between them was perfectly executed. I do think Grace's sections are ultimately more memorable, but I had a great time blasting through with Leon all the same. I really liked the pacing of the game as well and when it would switch perspectives to let you decompress a bit or up the tension again. There's not really any areas I properly disliked, but there is some stuff I would say was questionable.
Mostly, my biggest complaints with the game come to light in the third act of it. Some of the bosses, enemy encounters and locations I didn't find particularly interesting. I don't want to get into any specifics as I know you might still be working your way through, so I'll leave that for when you finish. By no means let this specific observation turn you away from the final act of the game, however! I still think it's hugely enjoyable, but just not up to par with the earlier sections for both protagonists. I also think the story ends on a somewhat sour note. Truthfully, I don't play the Resident Evil games for engaging storytelling. I'm totally fine with them just being camp, middle of the road or even less, but what did piss me off was the very, very end of it.
I think that by now you'll have heard the ending is decided by one choice you make close to when the credits roll. I think the fact they did that was a mistake. Not only because I feel like the motivations behind either option are poorly explored beforehand, but just because I hate the concept of having a choice in this particular instance to begin with. Capcom pulled this exact same thing with 7 where they present you with a choice that ultimately has no meaning. We all know upon finishing the game which choice is going to end up being canon. There's no way they're going to uphold both possible options within the canon, so I don't understand why they even make it a choice-based affair to begin with. Just give us linearly the ending that you want to write and want to continue the franchise with rather than giving me some illusion of player choice that I know will eventually be ignored anyway. That pissed me off conceptually, and I think the results have shown that many people are unsatisfied with the ending because of it. The whole montage at the end also just seemed ridiculous to me. Again, it's not a dealbreaker for me as I don't take the story seriously to begin with. I'm there for the vibes and the mechanical prowess of the developers, but it just reads as a nonsensical choice to me.
Mechanically, it plays incredibly well. I think the return to Raccoon City absolutely lived up to the hype, even if I was wondering for much of the game when this crutch of the whole advertising campaign was going to get into full gear! It didn't disappoint once it did. It's funny, because having played The Last of Us: Part II recently, it gave off very similar vibes to me. I do think the feel of the third-person gameplay feels somehow different from the recent remakes. I can't exactly pin-point what it is, but Leon's movement felt a lot more sluggish than in 4 Remake for example. It wasn't necessarily to its detriment as I think it controlled totally fine, but I wonder what decisions where made there exactly for it to play differently. Or maybe I'm simply imagining this difference!
The art design is also totally on point. Like I said before, the devastated Raccoon City does not disappoint, but I thought the cold interior of the care center was highly memorable itself. I loved traversing throughout it and exploring new rooms, which while I have that with every entry, this one seemed particularly well-designed. Possibly the best, tightest level design since the RPD in 2 Remake. I also appreciated the fact that rather than one big boss or stalker-type, the game offered you multiple high-level enemies that all were interesting and had their own gimmick. I'm going to admit that I'm somewhat tired of stalker-type enemies after Mr. X, Nemesis, Dimitrescu... It felt refreshing to have multiple different formidable foes that I could also take down if I had the resources and courage. Feeling Grace grow from a scared, little cat into someone who can take care of business was also a very satisfying progression mechanically. It comes across less like that when it comes to the cutscenes, but I do feel the power creep while still remaining vulnerable throughout. I think that was very well-balanced. I also liked the addition of stealth elements and made great use of the injectors they introduced. That was basically my way of getting rid of anything that outclassed the regular zombies!
So yeah, while it has its faults, I'm highly impressed by the game as a whole. I do think it's one of those cases where the game is more than the sum of its parts. I think when you take each aspect of it individually, you'll always find some tid-bit to criticise, but that it ultimately comes together perfectly. I'd definitely rate it as one of my favourite entries, probably only below 2 Remake and 4 Remake. Though I believe that 4 Remake shares a lot of the criticism I could level at this one, so they're a lot closer in terms of quality for me than what the overall consensus might suggest. 2 Remake still stands tall for me and will probably be hard to beat by any of the upcoming entries with it being such a masterfully tight experience!
Do let me know how you've been feeling about it thus far and how far you've gotten. I've tried to stick to more sweeping statements, so I hope you don't feel I've in any way spoiled the rest of the experience for you! I hope you enjoy whatever remains and will be eager to read what you think.
(P.S. And for someone who claimed there's not much to say, he sure wrote an overly long comment about it again. I'm nothing if not a total hypocrite!)
@Tjuz Thanks for posting your thoughts, I enjoyed reading through them. I actually finished my first run, so spoilers aren’t a concern. I’m mostly aligned with you on this one but maybe slightly more mixed.
The switching back and forth seems to have worked for a lot of people (I was excited about this approach too) and I can appreciate the attempt to marry the two styles but after experiencing it, I would have preferred the more traditional approach of separating the campaigns (perhaps marrying them for the final stretch to support the ‘choice,’). I understand this would effectively be two different games in one but it would have done a lot for the game’s rhythm, structure and identity. It’s clear to me that survival horror benefits from a continuous, unbroken journey.
Speaking of the choice, it didn’t bother me but I agree that it felt completely unnecessary. I actually think it was over-explained and could have been far more interesting had they truly built a sense of uncertainty around it. Unfortunately, due to the game’s structure, we were effectively locked out of the part of Grace’s story where this could have been properly fleshed out.
There’s a version of this game that I think could be an absolute masterpiece. A version where we play as Grace, uninterrupted, from the moment her boss sends her to the crime scene right up to ARK. We struggle and claw and scratch our way through as Grace gains the strength to overcome her past. We have to come to the conclusion on what elpis is, pitting our research against the Wesker clone’s verbal poison. Ending on a cliffhanger, we unlock Leon’s campaign, where we then indulge the catharsis of destroying all of the obstacles that terrified us as Grace. The catch is, Leon gets weaker as his campaign ensues. The coughing fits build in frequency, we lose inventory space as he grows weaker etc…Then we marry the campaigns for the final stretch, culminating in the choice, now with earned weight behind it.
I don’t mean to sound overly negative, I just feel a bit funny about it. Overall, I had a great time while I was playing but after finishing it, I feel oddly empty. Like an inescapable, “That’s it?” Mostly, I think the game’s most memorable moments rely too heavily on nostalgia and is too often bogged down by pacing issues, yet is also comfort food of the highest quality. The design is amazing, it’s polished to high heaven and the audio is best in class. So yeah, I enjoyed the heck out of it but also feel notably ‘meh’ about it as the next evolution of Resident Evil. It’s a 9/10 video game through and through, but as a fan, left me more excited about what happens next than diving into a replay.

What do people think about us getting some sort of reveal for the 30th anniversary tomorrow? It would be a good time to announce the DLC or confirm the Code Veronica remake but I'm going to expect pretty much nothing. If things aren't ready to show you can't really force it just for the convenient date.
@BearsEatBeets I am withholding any sort of expectations for the big 30th, remember Capcom gave us Umbrella Corps for the 20th (which was god awful btw) and RE:verse for the 25th (which was also terrible). Maybe they have learnt their lesson since then and considering RE9 has done unbelievably well both with reviews and copies sold there maybe hope.... I have been saying for awhile that we could see CVX remake reveal at Summer games fest because it will have more eyes on it then the anniversary event.

I’m extremely tempted to start another playthrough. So very, very tempted.

Just do it, while it's not the strongest in the franchise for replayability, it's still a lot of fun, and doing the in-game challenges can get you really unlocks!
So Capcom just released a photo mode for the game! didn't think I would ever want one for a Resident Evil title but honestly this game deserves one, looks like I'll be jumping back in (maybe on the weekend) and getting some really cool shots, here are the patch notes: https://mp1st.com/title-updates-and-patches/resident-evil-req...

@Metonymy I do think you're right that horror benefits from an unbroken, continuous journey. Your suggestion for how they could have handled the separate campaigns is very valid. Like I said, it worked tor me, but I think that I'm also so desensitiser to the feeling of dread horror is supposed to give you that I can't adequately comment on what would've worked better or worse for the people who do still experience it properly. I'm honestly jealous that I can't get that out of it anymore, but I understand your perspective from a game design standpoint and how this approach as it is would've lessened the impact. I would agree either way that the pacing was all over the place and much stronger in Grace's part of the narrative. In general, I think the game somewhat fell apart as soon as we reached the underground boss before ARK after Leon's more open-world section. Not to the degree that I wasn't having fun, but where it still noticeably felt of lesser quality. I was also not a fan of how the return of the Lickers were utilised. Being bombared by them in rather open spaces felt like it went against the philosophy that made them stand out in the first place.
Interesting you felt the big moment at the end was over-explained in anything. I wonder if that's the general consensus and I was just not paying well enough attention or you were just smart to pick up on it! I'll admit I'm never as narratively invested in Resident Evil as I am in other narratively driven games. It could be that I just tuned out at the wrong moments where all the important groundwork was being laid for that moment! I do agree that I wish we'd seen more of everything leading up to that from Grace's perspective. Her part of the final area felt like a missed opportunity on that front. Just a lot of nothing with the only narratively relevant moment saved for the final moments in her shoes.
I love your concept of how they could've shown Leon's condition worsening over time! That would've been a very interesting play on the formula, getting weaker instead of stronger over time. From fighting to inventory to everything else! I'm somewhat pissed they didn't do exactly this now. How do we get you hired at Capcom for the next entry? Do you speak Japanese? 😉
I'm wondering what they'll be doing for the main story DLC. Like you said, they've left it open for some really interesting developments within this universe. I'm praying Ada will show up in some way or another no matter what they do, but I wouldn't be surprised if it focuses on Sherry with her already being present in-game. Feels odd to bring her into the fold on this one if they have no future plans for her whatsoever. I suppose it could've just been part of the RE2 nostalgia play, so maybe I'm reading too much into it.
May start another playthrough tonight to check out the photo mode. I do love a good photo mode.

Really don't know what I want from the story DLC, like who should it star? Leon? Chris? Ada? gun to my head if I had to pick someone it would Grace, as she truly a great character and deserves more time in the franchise.
Started my second playthrough. Playing in third-person for both Grace and Leon. Took some snaps with photo mode as well, so I’ll upload those to the screenshot thread later on.
