@RogerRoger Honestly I really dug Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time

They aren't the most wholly original action adventure games but their stories and presentation went a long way in making them memorable. I especially loved how they got various former Spider-Man voice actors to lend their voices to the various Spider-Men in the former game like Christopher Daniel Barnes as 2099, Josh Keaton as Ultimate, Neil Patrick Harris as Amazing and Dan Gilvezan as Noir

@RogerRoger What I love about the Toby movies is how well they portray what being a superhero is about. And I think the Insomniac game so far does a great job of that as well.

I played that Batman Beyond game, on Game Boy actually. I remember convincing myself it was the greatest thing ever

(I think I'd describe myself more as a DC kind of person, but if you'd ask me about my top 3 heroes, I'd say Batman, Spider-Man and Daredevil.)

@Kidfried I still think a Daredevil game in Insomniac’s world would be amazing. I mean... it might be a little hard to play a game as a blind man but similar games have ‘instinct’ modes and 3D audio has come a long way!

@TheFrenchiestFry I played both as part of my deep dive last year, and loved them. They educated me on a lot of Spidey lore but, even when I didn't quite get what was happening, I could tell they were made by people who really cared about the source material. I particularly enjoyed Spider-Man 2099 (which bodes well for my unopened Batman Beyond box set) and was able to go back and understand some of the nods and references to him I'd already seen and drawn a blank on.

@Kidfried Yeah, that's the key part of Spidey's character which sets him apart from some of the other, more interchangeable superheroes, I think. You get "a day in the life" stuff with him, which makes him much more relatable (and why I cut the Insomniac game a break for feeling too busy at times).

And absolutely, Spidey has rapidly become my second-favourite superhero, right behind Batman.

He might've even overtaken ol' Batsy if I'd have suffered the indignity of playing that Batman Beyond game for myself! Apparently, the GameBoy version is the "good" version. Yikes.

@nessisonett I felt SO teased when I saw the Murdock/Nelson law firm contact slip in the game

I'd honestly be so down for a shared Marvel Universe of games set in the Spider-Man PS4 continuity because if there's one thing the Activision games really were good at, it was how they incorporated guest characters and segments that called to the wider Marvel universe outside the Spider-Man stuff

@RogerRoger I love 2099 because he's basically a Spider-Man for a more corporately corrupt and cyberpunk-influenced New York where he almost operates on vigilante logic rather than purely good. Alchemax is basically like evil Stark Industries or Wayne Enterprises in his world

He isn't as drenched in dour imagery as Noir is but he's definitely got an edge compared to Peter, Miles or even people like Ben Reilly

@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah, it was gritty stuff, but all dressed up in neon and laser beams. Made for a nice contrast with the Noir era, had a good balance and, since we're speaking of suits, I was glad to see Insomniac include a decent take on the 2099 suit, as well.

Untitled

It's not a rare or special suit, so I hope that isn't too much of a spoiler for Kid (who might even have it already, considering it unlocks relatively early on).

@RogerRoger It always bothered me the 2099 suit was basically retconned into being blue because the color was incorrect on Shattered Dimensions' suit

It's actually meant to be black with the blue bits being accenting for the lighting when he's shown against stuff like neon lights. They pulled a similar trick with Venom in his early comics as well like Lethal Protector. It does look pretty stunning in the game though

@TheFrenchiestFry I did not know that! Thanks for the trivia! Need to add even more stuff to my "really should get around to reading" backlog, it seems.

I'm quite boring and have been sticking to the Classic Suit on PS5, but I'll use NG+ to mix things up.

@RogerRoger His early comics are where it's probably most exemplified. Shattered Dimensions was the first time he resurfaced in a long time so that perception of the character was basically what popularized him into how he looks aesthetically today, and eventually his series of comics got revived in the mid 2010s with the new duds being officially canonized which is why he's everywhere looking like that now

I personally like the Classic suit more than the Advanced suit myself. There's something just super straightforward but modern about how the basic duds look. I always thought the giant white Spider-emblem (specifically the one on the back) was going a little bit overboard and never got why he had those glove cut out bits where his fingers would stick out if those fingers were just costumed and covered anyway lol

My personal favorite costumes I used on the PS4 were probably the Stark Suit, the Last Stand outfit and Spider-Armor Mark IV (the All New All Different suit basically). I may be indifferent towards Dan Slott's creative choices in that particular run on the character, but the suit I always thought looked pretty slick

@TheFrenchiestFry As much as I'd probably uphold the original intent myself, I do think it's cool when little details are allowed to ebb and flow like that, and props to the game for bringing him back.

When I played on PS4 last year, I was all about the Advanced Suit (despite being vaguely aware of some controversy generated by the white spider emblem) but when I started on PS5 last week, having consumed much more Spidey media, I found myself switching back to the Classic Suit every time I paused to use the Photo Mode, and eventually I just put it back on full-time. It's a beautiful rendition of the timeless look, because a lot of the neat little details are still there (the textures, the expressive eyes, etc.) but he's unmistakably Spidey from any angle or distance.

Is this the Mark IV armour? I remember it's called something similar if not; there were a couple of "Mark Something" suits in the mix, so I could be mistaken. Whichever one it is, I really like it, and used it for a big chunk of my NG+ playthrough. Looked amazing in the action sequences.

I also used the Spider-Clan Suit a lot, despite knowing nothing about it. Just looks cool.

this is the Spider-Armor Mark IV suit. This originated from when Marvel were launching the "All New, All-Different" restart for their comics, which was basically positioned as a fresh start with new Issue #1s for all their ongoing series but it was still continuing off of what was set up the previous year with their relaunches. This specifically came from the arc in the Amazing Spider-Man series where Peter had recently retaken the mantle of Spider-Man after Otto Octavius gave him his body back at the end of his tenure as Superior Spider-Man, but in his wake, he left behind all the stuff he helped establish like Parker Industries and his good relations with J. Jonah Jameson, which Peter himself had no idea about since he was technically absent all that time as a result of being body swapped with Otto's deceased corpse, so he basically has to micromanage all of that as well as certain sectors of SHIELD as well

Even though I'm personally indifferent to that particular run on the character I always dug the suit. The Spider-Clan suit is also another favorite. It came from when Marvel launched a Mangaverse imprint where they basically tried to reimagine their major characters under a more Japanese-influenced setting, so Spider-Man there was a younger kid who was basically raised with a bunch of ninjas under the tutelage of his sensei Uncle Ben

I'm always wearing the Advanced suit. It was unlocked from the start and it reminded me of some older Spider-Man comics I read. Then I discovered it was actually the suit from the latest film (!), which I didn't even watch.

Anyway, the suit has grown on me enormously and, this is always my problem with cosmetics, now I just associate the suit with this game, and every other suit feels off. I've come across a lot of great suits in the meantime, which I wore for five minutes, before changing back.

(I'm also the person that has the same horse in RDR2 for the entire game, even though there were better horses available, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.)

@RogerRoger Wait, you haven't watched Batman Beyond yet? Oh wow!

To give y'all some impressions of where I'm at, I just beat Mr. Negative in Grand Central. So I'm probably way past the halfway mark already.

I also did all side activities that were opened up to me so far, though I already discovered that I'm going to need to grind the bases in order to unlock everything. (Not looking forward to that.)

RogerRoger

@TheFrenchiestFry Ah, thank you (and yes, on closer inspection this morning, that suit I posted isn't even one of the "Mark Something" suits, so shows what I know)!

The Mark IV is pretty cool. I think the glowing green emblem put me off using it more frequently, but I love the shiny plated texture on the rest of it (same reason I like the Infinity War outfit, even though the design itself isn't a favourite). Sounds like it carries a heck of a lot of history, which must help. I also think your description of the Marvel Mangaverse sounds brilliant, so I'll definitely be using the Spider-Clan Suit throughout the DLCs and NG+ once again, and will investigate the source material.

***

@Kidfried Is this the suit you mean? Gonna be interesting when you finally watch Spider-Man: Far From Home someday, given you now associate it so strongly with the game!

You're also at the point in the game where I'd left things before the weekend. I played a bit more this morning and was reminded of how quickly things escalate, so buckle up. You're about to finish the second of three acts, and the third act is the shortest. There is a little bit of grinding required to achieve that 100% statistic, but it shouldn't be too arduous. I didn't mind it at all, and I hate grinding.

(And no, I haven't watched Batman Beyond yet, much to my shame! Got the Blu-Rays delivered during a busy week and they went to the bottom of an ever-growing pile. I've got a few things I need to polish off, but all this superhero talk has me in the right mood, so I might start them soon!)

@Kidfried I think you mean the Upgraded Suit. That's the Far From Home costume. The Advanced Suit is the one that's unique to PS4 Spidey with the giant white Spider-emblem

Also yeah the Mr. Negative fight was fun. It's kind of funny Spider-Man at some point has to run into problems related to trains or train stations but it was nice payoff after how the mission opened with that MJ sequence

I genuinely wonder how the licensing in some cases worked to get some the easter eggs for the wider Marvel universe into the game

Activision used to be able to do stuff like put in locales and supporting characters from non Spider-Man properties into their Spider-Man games, but they were also basically the defacto Marvel games developer/publisher for the better half of the decade they were active not counting the LEGO stuff

Insomniac really only possesses the Spider-Man stuff while Square is off doing their thing with Avengers and yet this game is just filled with so many non-Spider-Man related locations like Avengers Tower, the Nelson/Murdock Law Firm and I think even the Sanctum Sanctorum

There's even an allusion to Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) somewhere in the F.E.A.S.T. shelter. It looks like it might be a plot point thing that Murdock and Walters are working under aliases

@TheFrenchiestFry I've often wondered similar. Especially since, you're right, some games can get away with anything (how LEGO Marvel Superheroes got made during such a contentious time for the various movie rights, I'll never know). I think it depends on the level of reference. We're a long way from actual characters showing up, but a piece of scenery, line of dialogue or even a voicemail from said character might be okay. Could even fall under fair use / parody copyright laws, if anybody objected.

Because yeah, despite reports to the contrary, the remastered Spidey still makes a comment about the Avengers being away on the west coast (at least, he did for me last night) and you're right, the Sanctum Sanctorum is one of the landmarks you have to photograph. There's also a Wakandan Embassy in the same neighbourhood. All surface-level stuff that doesn't have to go anywhere.

@RogerRoger I think LEGO Marvel got away with it mainly because they were drawing explicitly from comic lore and comic material rather than going the route of making stuff MCU accurate like with the Avengers game they did afterwards, which is why in terms of licenses it was a lot easier to get ahold of more characters given all Marvel had to do was license that stuff out. It especially bode well for them because it could also be viewed as a tie in to the fact LEGO has the rights to make Marvel sets and they were doing that for about a year before the game came out, and had free reign over what could be used or what couldn't

Spider-Man's in a super interesting situation where it's clear Marvel has given Insomniac the leverage to actually tease the fact other Marvel characters exist within Spider-Man's world. It could just be visual easter eggs but even then, especially given there were other game projects that were being developed in parallel where said characters made physical appearances, I think they actually have the go-ahead to use the characters but it has to be within the context of a Spider-Man game in that they can't be playable

Black Panther is in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite and is also coming to Square's Avengers game, but Insomniac was also clearly allowed to put in the Wakandan embassy as an in game location. Same with Doctor Strange being in MvCI in addition to the Sanctum Sanctorum being in Spider-Man, while Iron Man is super weird because he's in Square's Avengers game, was clearly teased to exist in the Insomniac games based on that sticky note reminder in Peter's room to call him back for a job offer, and there's a PlayStation-exclusive Iron Man VR game that was actually also published by Sony on top of that

I have a feeling Marvel's just willing to give the go-ahead on characters they can use but they have to tie specifically into the property they're being used for. Like I think Daredevil or an Avenger can show up in the next Spider-Man game no problem, but they can't be playable. They have to be supporting characters for the Spider-Man cast like Peter, Miles and MJ
