Here's the thread for all the Marvel's Spider-Man games by Insomniac!
Games:
Marvel's Spider-Man
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
@RogerRoger So, we're both playing through the Remastered edition of this game!
The graphics in this game are amazing. I really enjoyed your comparison screenshots. What blew me away most of all is when I switched from performance mode to the ray-tracing enabled performance mode.
You're running on and swinging by reflective surfaces so often, that it was a huge game changer for me. I don't think screenshots do the ray tracing justice, because you really have to experience that in motion to fully appreciate it.
From a marketing standpoint making this a premium package maybe wasn't a really good look. But if you look at what the Remastered is offering, than the price tag is easily justified. A lot of work has been put in this remaster and it makes the game truly shine.
A knock against the game, and something that I didn't expect going in, is how much repetition there is in this game. It's way more of a Ubisoft game than I had anticipated. And there's so much of everything, that at some point I'll just rush through things like a checklist (like Assassin's Creed) versus taking to perfectly execute every activity (like Days Gone).
I remember having made a ranking of recent PlayStation exclusives recently. And @Th3solution saying to be interested in where Spider-Man would fit in. Right now I reckon I'd rank it somewhere just below Lost Legacy and Days Gone.
@Kidfried Thanks for the tag, and that we are! By the way, I reckon it's a good idea to have a fresh, all-encompassing topic like this. The future of the series is on PS5, and you've included all of its current and forthcoming entries up there. This is where people are gonna look, so it makes sense.
I'm real glad you're enjoying it as much as you are, but your criticisms are absolutely valid. My review of the game on PS4 was built around those exact two points; that the gameplay had to be safe, and that New York occasionally felt too busy. Both are because of Spidey himself, I reckon. He's a big brand (so everybody would wanna be playing his game, meaning it couldn't break too many established moulds and hence why we get known quantities like fog-clearing towers) but, as a character, he's also a haphazard overachiever, being pulled in tons of different directions all at once (which is why his in-game phone never stops ringing, and why sometimes it can feel a bit of an overwhelming rush to get everything done).
I'm super-keen to get to Miles Morales because it'll be interesting to see if the latter point changes at all, given the shift in protagonist. Miles still has plenty of obligations, just like Pete, but I'm curious to see whether they'll bleed into the game's design or pacing (or whether it's just a happy coincidence that Insomniac made an overstuffed game, and it just happened to fit the character).
Where are you up to in your current playthrough? Are you gonna 100% the thing, or will you be cracking straight on with the sequel as soon as the credits roll? How much Spidey is too much?!
"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."
@RogerRoger I'm definitely trying for the platinum, and getting all the trophies (except the New Game+), the DLC as well.
I'll probably take a break from Spidey then, so I can recharge my hunger for men in tights, before I start playing Miles Morales - which I am looking forward to playing!
@Kidfried Smart move, planning a break (don't wanna overload too much of a good thing, even when said good thing is men in tights). I've found myself playing a heck of a lot alongside Spidey, so I might be okay to charge right on ahead, but I'm definitely gonna see how I'm feeling first. I've been so excited for Miles, I don't wanna end up oversaturating myself, because then any frustrations won't be his fault.
Best of luck aiming for that platinum! I actually found NG+ very achievable before, even though I was also playing it on Ultimate difficulty. The story isn't that long when you ignore all the side stuff.
"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."
@Kidfried Same, kinda. I watched Into the Spider-Verse early last year and it single-handedly triggered all of my recent Spidey fandom. As far as I'd been concerned, the character was "those three okay movies with Tobey Maguire in" and so, whilst it's been awesome catching up with Pete across many more games, movies and comics, it's all thanks to Miles. He's awesome.

Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man PS4 definitely helped in getting me back into the comics again given I hadn't read Nick Spencer's run on the Amazing series at that time. I was just so burnt out with how Dan Slott treated the character with stuff like Parker Industries and him acting like some self-destructive prick during the latter half of his involvement with the character
What was really weird to me were the QR missions; a literal copy from Arkham. That was so weird to me. I know Spider-Man was inspired by Arkham, but there was no need at all to go this far.
Couldn't they do something more Spidey like instead? I would have loved an obstacle course.
Another thing I'm missing so far is interesting fights with superbaddies. Even side quests with superbaddies are either:
A) the villain sends regular goons after you, no need to fight the actual villain
B) the villain sens regular goons after you, and they themselves are a brute.
@TheFrenchiestFry Superior Foes of Spider-Man comes highly recommend. Read that series, if you're a fan of Spencer's work. It's a hidden gem!
A lot of people on the web have been clamoring for a Batman Beyond game. And you know, so do I. But in the same vein I would love a Superior Spider-Man game. I know Dan Soort often gets a bad rep, and a lot of it deservedly so, but I really dug that storyline.
Triple post, sorry. @RogerRoger nothing wrong with the Toby Maguire films. They're a bit too "zeroes" with the Nickelback soundtrack and it's typical early 2000s edginess, but I think it was a great adaption regardless. And it got me into Spidey!
@Kidfried Superior Spider-Man would make a great game. Probably a bit more like an Arkham game given Otto is a scientist and approaches problems in that way. Plus heās a whole lot more brutal.
@Kidfried Superior Spider-Man despite how divisive that era for the character was I actually really liked. The idea of Otto Octavius basically being given Peter's younger body while still retaining his intellect and resourcefulness in addition to still being morally gray added a really cool twist to how Spider-Man would operate. He walks the line between being Spider-Man or being more like Daredevil or Moon Knight at that point
Not having at least the Superior costume in either the original game or as one of the Remastered costumes was a huge missed opportunity
@TheFrenchiestFry Oh no. After seeing the Superior trophy, I kind of expected that I would still unlock the Superior custome at some point. It's one of my favorite customes.
@Kidfried I was totally expecting that suit to be the Platinum reward
I never got the Platinum for the game but seeing that explicit acknowledgement of Superior Spider-Man in the trophy list made me really believe that it was some cool post-game extra for getting all the trophies. I was pretty bummed that wasn't the case. I probably would've traded the Armored Advanced Suit from the remaster for the Superior costume
@Kidfried They're great movies, the Tobey Maguire ones! Watched them again with a newfound appreciation after I'd gotten over my entrenched DC fanboyism. Loved 'em.
It'll be interesting to see how you feel about this game by the time the credits roll, given your partway thoughts posted above. [sits on hands] One thing I will say is that Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions on the PS360 did a lot more wholesale copy-pasting from the Arkham series, and got away with it by virtue of still being a decent game. I think there are some universal truths in modern superhero games but, you're right, an obstacle course is something that'd suit Spidey rather well (although, given that Insomniac opted to make free-running so automatic, it'd have to be quite an involved one).
And hey, they've got to save something for the sequel, so maybe they'll include a Superior Suit then!
Oh, and there was a Batman Beyond game, but... well, see for yourself.
Yeah. Sorry about that.
