Topic: Marvel’s Wolverine OT

Just installing this atm and interested to hear peoples thoughts before I dive in tomorrow.

Obviously the reviews were pretty poor but it’s given me a bit of hope seeing a lot more positivity from the garden-variety gamer today both on Youtube and in the comments section of some of the recent articles.

As someone who rates Days Gone very highly and was also pleasantly surprised by The Order: 1866 when I finally gave it a go… I wouldn’t be massively surprised if I end up quite liking it.

Two missions in and loving it so far, I'm on mutant difficulty and some fights are pretty tough which honestly surprised me! I don't think it needs to be said but the game looks and runs amazing (should be no surprise), early days yet, will come back later with more thoughts.

My first impression is very good and I'm excited to play more.
Obviously it's too early to judge the story or whether the combat gets repetitive but I'm optimistic.
Combat in the first level was very fun.

Have fun guys, I'm holding off for a while. I'm trying to finish the big chunky Wolverine Omnibus book so I have a good set of reference points, I knew nothing about Spiderman and that didn't help my experience with those games. This time I'll be prepared, hopefully this thread takes off. The game needs more positivity around it, not ridiculous pokes and prods. Crimson Desert was the same and it's turning into one of my favorite all time games. Popping back out to avoid spoilers/etc. Please consider sharing some screen-shots too if you can, the photo-mode looks really good and there's a screen-shot thread.

Oh and for the people who said that the characters look "bad or ugly" literally do not know what they talking about, Jean looks hot.

@Oram77 I actually think Insomniac absolutely nailed the casting. The actors and VAs there isn’t a single bad choice across the main cast.

So just finished up the first chapter - Telambang and thought it was real solid… more than solid if I’m honest but I’m trying hard not too get ahead of myself given the prevailing discourse around the game.

Combat is fun! I’ve never been a fan of the Spiderman combat which seems like an evolution of the freeflow combat from the Arkham series, the Shadow of… series and Witcher 3 but this feels different. Maybe it’s the directional parry? I made a conscious decision to up the difficulty from what I would normally play a game on given the online moans and groans, so I can’t comment on those who played the game on very easy (The Man), easy (The Hunter) or normal (The Mutant) but you won’t get far by simply mashing square on The Weapon I’ll tell you that.

Just had my first boss fight against Omega Red and really enjoyed it. Probably died around 5 or 6 times but that’s what I want. I don’t want to walk through enemies, I want to learn the tells and the patterns and then have to execute the various game mechanics at the right time to overcome a challenge. I have a sneaky feeling that a fair chunk of the reviewers may’ve played it on too easy a setting if I’m honest. And the result is the same with every Character Action game (I still hate that naming convention btw), if you play your Devil May Cry’s, God of War’s or Bayonetta’s on easy, you’ll be able to mash your way through them all. It’s only when you up the difficulty that you start having to make split second choices to survive. I’m not saying that Wolverine’s combat is as good as the games mentioned, as I’ve only played around 90 minutes or so… but it’s fun, challenging (on the appropriate difficulty) and satisfying.

The game looks gorgeous, the voice acting seems strong, the little I have heard of the score evokes the correct sort of rugged stoicism associated with the character. I’m liking the little I’ve seen of the story so far too. I’m actually thinking that the all-encompassing negativity surrounding the game has actually helped in regards to my initial experience. I’ve certainly gone in with lowered expectations (which is never a bad thing in my case) and most importantly I’ve actively pursued a challenge (something I’d normally only do if it were a requirement for a platinum).

So far, so… well, let’s keep it at real sold… for the time being at least.

@psmr I've played until Trask shot the prisoner and I've enjoyed it a lot, though there are a couple of very minor niggles that made me decide to put it on hold for a bit. Nothing major, a couple of jarring cutscene triggers that unexpectedly happened while I was exploring and things like that. Was playing on Mutant difficulty, but as it is adjustable in-game, I will crank it up when I decide to get stuck in proper and then adjust it down should I feel it necessary.
Great game and just my kind of action game

@FuriousMachine yeah I did notice the same thing with the cut scenes starting while I was looking around. Thankfully, that does seem to be something that only happened during the introduction, so I wouldn’t be too put off.

So I’m probably half way through… ish… and don’t let the haters put you off this completely, it’s a good video game. I’m pretty sure the only issue I’ll end up having with it is that it’ll finish before I’ve had enough.

I’m now gonna retire to watch some choice episodes of X-men: The Animated Series and drink bourbon. Cheers 🥃!

@psmr Have you been playing non-stop since yesterday? I'm trying to gauge how long half-way takes. I never thought of the cartoon either, I completely forgot it exists.

Also you might now know the version Japan was given. I know it because I saw a more violent version dubbed in Russian and I think it was the Japanese version. I think England and America had a more children's morning version. I only saw a couple of episodes.

@GirlVersusGame I didn’t start it until this morning but apart from stopping for food and water, I played pretty much all day. I actually didn’t want to stop but I thought it would probably be a good idea to leave some for tomorrow if you get me.

I didn’t know that the Japanese version of the animated series was any different tbh… still the whole Saturday morning cartoon-ness of it all is half the charm for me I guess.

@psmr All day sounds a good amount of content especially if you are only half way through and not as they say a casual gamer. I have a list of cartoons I want to try, I mentioned some yesterday, eventually I'll get to them. I tried for the first time Bob's Burgers this week. The others in that X-men style are: Captain Planet, Spiderman, Turtles, Thundercats, Biker Mice, James Bond Junior, Braveheart, He-Man, the others I forget. I've seen Dogtanian and the Three Muskahounds, The Dreamstone, The Raccoons, Batman, South Park was recent, Archer was I think Monday. I'm not sure of any other Marvel cartoons. I'll leave you to your Bourbon but if you think of any worth adding I'd appreciate it.

@GirlVersusGame some good shouts there, though I think you could do without Captain Planet polluting your consciousness 😉. Marvel-wise, I really enjoyed X-men: Evolution too. After a slowish start, it ends up doing an amazing Apocalypse story arc. The Marvel What If’s are very good too.

Other than Marvel, might I suggest Battle of the Planets, Ulysses 31 and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.

• I tried it as a child and he made me feel like absolute crap because he was telling me how certain people were responsible for ruining the environment by draining natural resources, even back then I looked in the mirror and thought he might be right. I'm older now and thought perhaps I could face all of that with a fresh outlook but if you as an Adult are saying that then maybe I shouldn't. I'll stick to Steven Segal's speech at the end of On Deadly Ground instead, at least that had Basil Poledouris.

Took me 17 hours to platinum. Genuinely enjoyed the game. What it does, it does well, it’s a very polished beat’em up / brawler style of game. It doesn’t do anything new combat wise but felt satisfying and the visuals gore never got old. I have a feeling people will look back in time far more favourably on this game.

I’ve just stopped for some food but holy ****ing ****-balls is the combat good in this game! As I’ve mentioned before, the only thing I can think as to the negativity around the combat is that people were playing it on a difficulty setting under their personal level. I just Adamatium’d the second (of three) combat gauntlet on Weapon difficulty and honestly… that is some of the best melee combat I can remember (and I’ve played a lot of character action games!).

So must be real close to the end now but I needed to eat some supper and will probably leave the last hour or two for tomorrow. Still not bored of the combat… in fact far from it 😏
