Valor Mortis team One More Level believes it's created a first-person Soulslike with the "quality, fidelity, and play time" of a full-priced PS5 release, so it's decided to price its upcoming game at $39.99 instead.
In a statement posted to social media, the developer talks up the quality of Valor Mortis, but also recognises it's putting the title out during a busy period with a lot of other PS5 releases. It was already delayed once — out of this month and to 13th October 2026 — because of the crowded release calendar.

To that end, the Ghostrunner team is pricing Valor Mortis at $39.99.
Further, the game won't be available to pre-order. Instead of asking for cash ahead of time, the developer wants "to let the completed version of our game do the talking". It wants you to see the final version and then decide if you want to buy it or not.
There will be a $59.99 option: the Deluxe Edition. This will package in a "major story DLC" due for release in 2027, and between the base game's launch and its release, there'll be some cosmetic packs. "We also have multiple free updates planned that will add more ways to enjoy Valor Mortis in the weeks and months ahead," the developer added.
For those who don't know, Valor Mortis is the next game from the Ghostrunner studio, and takes a first-person Soulslike structure to the times of Napoleon.
"You are William, a soldier of the Grande Armée brought back from a battlefield grave. But the Europe you awaken to is not the one you sacrificed for. A mysterious plague now sweeps the continent, and you have been reborn with its corrupting power pulsing through your veins."
It's coming to PS5 on 13th October 2026, now confirmed at a base price of $39.99. Are you interested in the game? Let us know in the comments below.

So is it complete at launch or are they doling out incremental updates on a drip feed?
Gotta respect that they don't want pre-orders as they want you to judge on the actual quality of the game at release. Kudos.
£39.99 is also less than I thought, but sadly my next few months are already full. Perhaps i'll find time in 2027, but if it's good I may buy it at launch to support anyway.
I’m really losing track of all the games releasing. Never heard of this game before. But good price point, i’m sure they knew it would be hard to compete this packed fall season if they went with $70. I just hope its not because they only value their game at $40
I’ll be playing this on GamePass but nice move and if I really like it, I’ll buy it at some point.
@Balaam_ "So is it complete at launch or are they doling out incremental updates on a drip feed?" Is this your take on every game that has planned dlc in the future? Honestly you could ask this about any major release.
It reminds me of Steel Rising with some Bloodborne thrown. I hope it does well for them, my only concern is that it seems to be light on enemies. Or it's because I'm constantly fighting fifty or so in Crimson Desert, it still looks sharp and I love a good a musket. It's my favorite rifle in Palworld, all you need is one good shot, the same for these Developers and the price-point should help.
Edit: An example of what I mean, my screen right now. Also I have a musket there too. It's the first game where I felt strong enough to run into that many enemies. I fell into a hole earlier today while walking the lands and was suddenly surrounded by a cloud of bandits. It felt like I was in Fury Road and the Warboys were trying to turn me into a Crimson Bloodbag.
The alt-history setting (I wish we had more historical titles in various genres), the horror elements, the first person perspective all appeal greatly but I just do not know if I can do another parry heavy souls-like anymore. I just can't be arsed anymore.
I wonder if its got an easy mode so I can just digi-tourist and take in the tone and artistry instead.
Oh and its worth noting that its £35 on disc.
I’m buying it day one, because it’s one of my most anticipated releases in October.
I like the pricing, and the game appeals to me, so I shall be buying this as soon as I can. Too may games try to charge you £70 for a game that is worth nowhere near that, and I I shall support this developer by buying the Deluxe Edition when I can...
I'm very curious about this one. I do love me a good Soulslike and the 1st person spin is a nice breath of fresh air. I also think the Napoleonic setting is very cool. $40 seems to be the new sweet spot for lower profile games.
It remains to be seen if I have the time to play it, but it is very much on my radar.
@Balaam_

Games like this make me wish that I liked Soulslike games. I hope fans of the genre enjoy this one; it looks neat.
Devs Confirm Valor Mortis Wont Have Difficulty Options, Advises To "Master Perfect Parrying Like Sekiro If You Plan On Playing The Game"
Ah well. ***** that then.
I suck at soulslikes but the setting and 1st person has me interested. I'll wait for the reviews.
Why the constant calling it a Souls like, when it's obviously a combination of Bioshock and Dishonored...At least what I've seen of it, it is anyway 🙂
I never heard of the game so i looked up gameplay on it. I can see why its releasing for $40.
I'm excited for the game, I really enjoyed the demo they put out around a year ago.
@IronCrow86 The developer itself advertises it as a Soulslike.
Don't know if the demo is still playable on Steam, but I would def recommend everyone give it a try. I don't know what is it, but unlike Ghostrunner this gave me really bad motion sickness. Game is freaking sick otherwise, very pretty, the soulslike formula translated nicely to 1st-person and there's some short yet slick platforming in there.
I'm not sure about this game. I wish they continue Ghostrunner for one more game. Loves the cyberpunk setting and i never feel bored playing as a cyborg ninja who can moves super fast.
I don't buy new games anymore.
I wait for them to be complete before i buy.
And a deep sale as well.
@Balaam_
I guess this is a new business model incremental updates (even for a traditional single-player game) can be used to keep the game in public mind and generate more sales over the long run. It seems to work well for Crimson Desert.
I was already interested, but like many others I have too many games to play already. At least I know I won't be spending too much when I do eventually get round to it.
No, no, no.. this is pure manipulation.
Sony is asking for $70 for a PS5 Game, while Valor Mortis Asks for $40 for the same Quality, Fidelity, and Play Time like AAA PS5 Game.
Now. Seems more correct.
I’ll make sure to pick this up and show support at release, as it seems right up my street!
And props to the developers for being open about how they see things. Hope they do very well with the release!
Looks decent, GP though so I'll play it there at some point.
Day one for me at that price point. Wolverine should have done the same.
