I'm talking from the moment you turn it on as opposed to just launching a game that has it. I was a skeptic until I upgraded my telly, but if you launch a PS4 game that has HDR, then push the PS button to go back to the dashboard, it looks SO much better. Then when you close the game and go back to the dashboard it just looks washed out and dull. Hopefully it's something Sony will have thought of.
@RogerRoger I used to turn HDR off for games, but the last few games I've played, which have been more recent releases (FFVIIR, TLOU2, GoT) have all been fine and I've left it on. I hate that annoying pause and black screen you get when a trophy pops however.

@JohnnyShoulder - Pause and black screen? I have HDR enabled for all games that use it and never had anything like that happen when trophies pop. It shouldn't be doing that at all.
@Shigurui Are you on a Pro? I think it might be something to do with the base consoles, which is what I've got so no 4k only hdr.
@LN78 Mine is an LCD screen. Movies and TV shows look fantastic but those are in 4K and HDR, but some of the earlier games I tried out I wasn't convinced by the HDR. Like I say on more recent titles it has been fine, and your right in GoT it does look stunning.

I use a PS4 Slim and I don't get a pause or black screen when I get a trophy, so that's very odd.
I have a LG 55" 4K TV that I bought about a year ago, and have found that HDR really ruins the experience for me. Games always, always have this weird dim look to them when its enabled, making them really hard to see. Ghost of Tsushima was the absolute worst, and I actually had to do some research and ended up turning HDR off on both my PS4 and the HDMI port of the TV to get rid of it, and that solved my problem.
But overall, since I've had the TV, every time the HDR enabled logo shows up, its been bad news. Honestly, I preferred the non-4k Samsung that was seven or eight years old that I had before this one, but it died on me. The backlight on it was MUCH stronger, making the picture on everything that I did easier to see without messing in the settings. Turn the brightness up on this one and it washes out the picture, even without HDR. But then HDR is like putting a pair of sunglasses on and trying to game that way. No thanks!
@Unlucky13 My experience has been that HDR together with 4K is stunning, but HDR on its own the result has been questionable. I thought the HDR in GoT was was a step up from anything else I've seen on PS4. It could be that you need to tweak some settings on your TV, i had to a lot of that to get the picture just right for across all content, not just when using ps4.

@JohnnyShoulder Thank you for the advice. I've tried a whole lot of tweaks, but honestly the thing that improved things more than any other was turning the HDR off. Suddenly, I could see what was happening on the screen for the first time. It was kind of like when my phone goes dim because the battery is low, and then gets bright again when I plus it in. It was that distinct.
Hopefully it isn't hard to turn off. I've been so much happier since I figured out how to do that on the PS4. It just ruins so many games by turning the brightness down.

Do you happen to have RGB set to 'Auto' in the PS4 settings?
RGB should always be set to match your TV and it's preferable to leave it on limited, rather than auto, as most TV's have the black level set to low.
If the settings are mismatched, games via the console will often appear too dark.

@Woogy Thank you for that. I'm satisfied how things are working since I turned it off for my PS4, but I'll be sure to check that out later when I eventually get a PS5.
@Unlucky13 Just an FYI, the RGB setting should be set to match your TV's black level regardless of whether you're playing a game in SDR or HDR.
So, normally the RGB setting on your console should be set at 'limited' to match the TV's black level, presuming it is set to 'low', which with OOTB settings, most TV's are .
