@graymamba
Sounds good. I wondered if all the jank is deliberate before you unlock the relevant tree upgrade, a bit like Alpha Protocol...but perhaps it is just jank.
As for the trophies worry ye not and just go with the flow, free yourself from the shackles of the shinies, however do make cloud/usb saves at appropriate points just to be sure.

graymamba

@CaptD aye, well you do get a few auto-saves… um… saved anyway but you’re right, definitely make some cloud saves too. You know me though mate, I’m a stress-head! It kills me… but I couldn’t operate without it.

@KidRyan Manny happy (and early) returns for Sunday! Best of luck with your platinum plans!

Anyone here who has played Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy? (…) What are you guys' thoughts? Worth looking into?

@Tjuz I’m a bit late seeing this question, but I can add my two cents (pence?) to what the colonel/mamba already said. And I’m coming from a slightly different viewpoint as one who really does like the Telltale style games. I’ve played most of their library, from all of TWD (although I still need to finish the final season… I should get on that), Game of Thrones, the Batman games, Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands (although I skipped the recent one), Back to the Future, and maybe some others that I forgot. And as you know, I have an affinity for other similar games like the Life is Strange games, the Quantic Dream games, and other narrative focused/low gameplay games out there of the walking sim variety and adjacent genres. With that said, I’d say the Telltale GotG settles in somewhere in the middle, as far as ranking these experiences. It’s not bad, but it’s not the best either. For context, I’d probably rank the top Telltale games to be Wolf Among Us, TWD season 1, and Tales from the Borderlands. The two Batman’s and GotG are in the middle, and the season 2,3 of TWD, GoT, and BttF are at the bottom.

Take this all with a grain of salt because upon review of my trophy list, it was early 2021 when I played Telltale’s GotG, so it’s been a while and my fuzzy memory is well documented. But as I recall, the game keeps most of the spirit of the Guardians IP — like the humor, the crew camaraderie, and the classic music. I don’t remember much about the story exactly, other than there’s some backstory about Rocket that actually showed up years later in the third movie. I might be misremembering that but I think I’m right. Above all, the voice acting whiplash is likely to be one of the biggest complaints. The movie actors have become canon in our brains, so you have to sever expectations there. It can come across like a second rate voice crew if you’re expecting Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, etc. Also, it’s not free if that Telltale jank and occasional cheese, but you’re probably expecting that.

I will say that the Square Enix GotG game that came out later is leagues better. It’s obviously a completely different style of game, being a third person action adventure game, but if a person were looking for the best GotG gaming experience, then definitely play the Square Enix one. I think you already have though. But if not, it’s one of the more under-appreciated licensed games out there.

If you’ve already played the Square Enix GotG, then consider giving the Telltale a try if you really are craving something from that universe and a game from that Telltale genre. But if it’s just a Telltale game you crave, then be sure to have played Wolf Among Us, TWD season 1, and maybe Tales of the Borderlands if you have any interest in that franchise.

Now, this may all be moot, because I think many of the Telltale licensed games have been delisted. I read that people were having trouble buying GotG. When I search the PlayStation store it does pop-up to download, but I had already bought it before Telltale went under, so not sure how all that works now.

@GirlVersusGame @graymamba @CaptD @Werehog Thanks everyone! I managed to earn both the Miles Morales PS4 and PS5 platinums on my birthday (Sunday).

I've now resumed replaying Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, though I'm considering digging out my old PS3 to see if it still works...

There are alot of PS3 games that still haven't been remastered or remade, that I've never played or finished.

[Edited by KidRyan]

graymamba

@KidRyan congrats mate! Hope that your PS3 still works, I’ve played a ton of PS3 classics the last few years… probably some of the best games I’ve played of late.

**** me? Nah… **** you (right in the ***)!

GirlVersusGame

@KidRyan You're welcome and congrats, hopefully your PS3 is still good. Mine lives in it's original box now, it has some of my favorite games and those classic collections. I haven't played Spiderman but I did get a platinum yesterday/today for Paw Patrol World. You'd actually like it, it's got puppies who can drive cars and things.

@graymamba Well, thank you either way for your thoughts despite your general feelings towards Telltale! I'm surprised that if anything you enjoyed the Game of Thrones game as much as you did. Is that just because you were already invested in the show/books and it was nice to see a different side of it, or were you genuinely just more impressed with its writing compared to other Telltale games? I definitel don't imagine their Guardians of the Galaxy reaches the heights of Eidos' efforts!

***

@Th3solution Better late than never (which goes for myself all the same)! Thank you for your two pence on the game. And yes, since you said you haven't played the final season of The Walking Dead, you do need to get on that! It's up with the first season in its quality. One of their best games in my opinion. For what it's worth, I personally also enjoyed Gearbox's attempt at the Tales from the Borderlands sequel. I know it has a largely negative reception, but I found it to be quite good and enjoyable. I honestly don't understand why it was so hated aside from the typical ''anti-woke'' crowd. Is it the best writing in the medium? No. Is it still a very enjoyable journey with some great humor throughout? Yes. I've always found the setting and humour to be the strength of the Borderlands IP rather than the actual gameplay, and I feel like this narrative adventure played into that very well.

I pretty much share your top Telltale games, but I am surprised you don't rank Batman: The Enemy Within amongst the top. I think it's also one of their best efforts, but I am a sucker for DC villains. Probably the only characters/narratives I really enjoy in the comic book space of media aside from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. I guess the setup for that story was just perfectly in line with my interests. Either way, if Guardians of the Galaxy lands among the same lines for you, then that is proper encouragement that I might at least get an enjoyable experience out of it even if nothing groundbreaking. The Eidos version really is a gem, which is also why I doubt I'll be too bothered by a change in voices for the characters since I had no issues with it there. It's truly a shame that we'll never get a sequel to their GotG! Truly one of the best narratives in a action-adventure game we've had in years. But yeah, the Telltale version is delisted, so if I want to get my hands on it... I'll either have to go second-hand somehow or sail the seven seas to take a crack at it. I'm at least properly convinced to give it a shot when I need a little palate cleanser!

@Tjuz As well-versed as you are with the Telltale games, I do think you should try to plug the GotG hole in your gaming history, if nothing else than for completionism. But yeah, if you enjoyed those others you mentioned, then you’ll enjoy GotG. I suspect it won’t live up to Dispatch or some of the others that have come more recently and sprung from the Telltale formula like the Life is Strange’s, etc. but it’s worth tracking down if you can.

Thanks for the encouragement on the final season of TWD. I paused around the second chapter, so didn’t make it far. A lot of my struggle had to do with too much time passing between the seasons and now it’s been even longer so I don’t quite have the connection to Clem and … I forget the boy’s name…
Also, it’s stuck on my PS4 and I would need to get my disc out and download it on my PS5 and go through all the hoops to get all the episodes downloaded which is always a bit of a pain with these types of games. My laziness is getting so bad. 😂

You’ve got me thinking about these style of games, which I know you and I both like. I think I’ve mentioned this, but for me, the best narrative ‘choice and consequence’ game is still Detroit Become Human. I think it’s my favorite in the genre. Until Dawn is another. I’ve only played two of Supermassive’s Dark Pictures Anthology but both were good; I need to get to the others (although unfortunately they were pulled from PS+ Extra). Even The Quarry was pretty decent, imo. So there’s some other ideas if you’re looking to scratch the story game itch, although most of these you’ve played I think. I know with the Supermassive, Quantic Dream, Don’t Nod/Deck Nine games that we’re getting into a more complex branching path/choose your own adventure style game, versus the Telltale games with are more straightforward and not necessarily giving drastically different outcomes, but I consider them all on a spectrum of the same genre.

Another you may find interesting, although I was a little disappointed in it was The Council. It took the episodic story game approach and layered in RPG elements. Instead of leveling skills that would apply to combat, there’s no combat in the game and it’s leveling skills which affect the interaction with the other characters and the world so that it changes story elements. Definitely more gameplay than the other games mentioned, and yet kind of on the ‘choice and consequence story game’ spectrum… in a weird sort of way. The setting was a great idea, that being historical fiction about a secret council of world leaders in the 1700’s. Unfortunately, they just didn’t quite stick the landing, imo. It ended up around a 6-7/10 for me. Still, if that interests you then it’s out there.

Also not sure how you feel about the live action story games but I’ve tried a couple, Erica and The Bunker. Both were okay. But again, something different and fresh and where you can just turn your reflexes off and wander through a story making choices.
Anyway, not sure how I got tangential like that, but it’s related, sort of. 😄

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

graymamba

@Tjuz yeah it probably was as simple as I missed Game of Thrones and the game done a decent enough job of filling that hole that it hit the spot for me. Still played much like any other Telltale in fairness.

**** me? Nah… **** you (right in the ***)!

Tjuz

@Th3solution You get tangential only because we're both equally talented yappers! For what it's worth, I also didn't play either the third or fourth season of The Walking Dead until about a decade since finishing the second, and the final season nonetheless hit me like a brick by the end. It's definitely worth going back to despite the struggles you might face in unlocking it on your PS5! I imagine it would've been an easier time had you owned it digital, but too little, too late for that now. And for your recollection... the little boy is called AJ! I still remember that much.

I loved Detroit: Become Human! I got a horrible ending in it in terms of the only character I desperately wanted to live happily ever after. Kira and Alice were shot at the border, because I started a violent revolution and had no other means of their survival at hand... i totally get why you think it's still the best example of choice and consequence. I can't honestly think of any game that has topped it really. As for the Supermassive games, I think I've said before I'm incredibly mixed on the Dark Pictures Anthology. I forget which ones you've played, but I found only Man of Medan and House of Ashes to be anything worthwhile. If those are the ones you have under your belt, I'm sorry to temper your expectations for the rest! I remember playing Until Dawn back in the day, but I believe I quit once the Wendigos showed up. Fot some reason, it didn't tickle my fancy. That was before I became a horror lover though, so I might have a better time with it nowadays. I haven't gotten to The Quarry however, so that one might be worth giving a second look despite my feelings on Supermassive as a whole.

I have also played The Council! It sounds like I enjoyed it more than you did. It definitely has its highs and lows, but I loved the RPG elements it introduced into the usual formula. That alone made it stand out against the sea of narrative games we got like it in Telltale's heyday. I played the developers' follow-up too, which was Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong. I don't know if you're familiar with that one, but I was a lot more mixed there. I still really enjoyed their unique mechanics within the genre, but the story was poorly paced and generally less interesting. Still finished it and enjoyed it well enough overall, but that one definitely leaned towaeds a 5 or 6 out of 10.

Have you ever played Star Trek: Resurgence? @Werehog turned me onto that one back in the day, and to great success. I keep tagging him every time I mention it, which has happened on several occasions at this point! It has really stuck with me. I'm not really familiar with Star Trek lore at all, but it stands very well on its own as a well-written sci-fi narrative. I'd highly recommend it if you haven't played it yet. Another one I'd mention is Dreamfall Chapters. It equally has choice and consequences (though much like Telltale, nothing major) and it's a fantastic world and story. With that one I have to give the caveat that you'd need to play Dreamfall: The Longest Journey first to get the most out of it however, which doesn't fit in the genre at all and is more lile an early prototype 3D movement point-and-click. I'm also not sure about its availability on PlayStation, but it's well worth tracking down if you have any way to play it. The narrative between those two games is a great saga that really pays off beautifully in the end!

I've never played either of the live action games you mentioned, nor do I think I've played any at all. That's still a little sub-genre within this niche I haven't explored. Would you say either is worth giving a good shot? It sounds like you weren't all too impresssed by them. I'm not sure what else there really should be in that particular style.

@Tjuz That’s right, it’s coming back to me now about the Dark Pictures games. I remember because of how you like Man of Medan and yet that’s the one most people don’t like. I’ve played it and Little Hope and thought they were both decent. I’d say The Quarry is about the same level of quality - so if those resonate with you then it probably will. It’s a classic teen slasher set up, which is what all these games seem to be at their core.

I’m also remembering the Star Trek Resurgence praise. I’ll keep it in mind. I’m a very casual Trek watcher, although sounds like maybe a little more into than you. I’ve watched a couple of the older movies and all the newer ones and for a brief time I watched the TV show The Next Generation for a while. Still, I’ve fallen off of it long ago but I would probably like the game, it sounds like.

And I looked up that Dreamfall Chapters game and it’s on sale right now on PSN for $1.99! It’s normally only $20 but currently on a 90% discount! 😅 I almost have to buy it for that cheap of a price. I can’t even get a bottle of water for that! But yeah, The Longest Journey is nowhere to be found on the PSN and I don’t game anywhere else, not even PC. There’s some playthroughs on YouTube I found though. Maybe I’ll have to pick it up just for a backup when I need a Telltale-like.

As far as live action games, there’s quite a few out there but I don’t really have interest in them usually. Often the acting is second rate and the production values are low. I don’t mind a few live action sequences mixed in, like Remedy do with their games, or like in the brilliant game Inscryption. But otherwise most of the pure live action games seem ‘meh’. Other than those two I played, there was one I was curious about called Telling Lies and was something about trying to figure out who’s lying to you, or something like that. Of the two I played, Erica was maybe a little better, and it’s a Sony first party exclusive, so you may not have access to it. They gave it away on PS+ or for the Play at Home promotions or something, because I know I have it for free. If you happen to have claimed it in your library and can fire up a PS4 or PS5 to play it, it’s worth the 2-3 hours it will take you to finish it. 😅

@Th3solution I've put The Quarry on my wishlist, so I'll be notified for whenever it next has a big sale. It's still funny to me how not one, but two Disney alumni have shown up in Supermassive games between Brenda Song and Ashley Tisdale. They must've been huge fans of Zack & Cody. Hope that you'll manage to grab Star Trek: Resurgence at some point! I have no doubt you'll enjoy it, though keep your expectations tempered when it comes to the visual fidelity of it. It can be a very ugly game, haha.

Ah, a shame that Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is not available. I seemed to remember that it was an Xbox exclusive back in the day, so it seems like that has carried forth. You'll probably be okay with finding a recap of the events of it so that you can enjoy Chapters. In all fairness, it hasn't aged particularly well, so I'm also not surprised a remaster isn't particularly in the publisher's best interests or anything. Like I said though, the world and its storytelling is fantastic.

I do actually know about Telling Lies. I was very interested when it first came out because Kerry Bishé was in it, who I loved in the TV show Halt and Catch Fire. It had a fairly mixed reception when it came out however, so I put it on the back-burner never to be considered again. A shame. I'm not sure what it'll take for me to pull the trigger on any of these live-action ones. I wouldn't have either of them in my library, nor do I have access to my PlayStation anymore. That one's still sitting in the Netherlands where it has become my little brother's FIFA machine! I do seem to remember Immortality was very well received and is from the same director as Her Story/Telling Lies. Maybe that one would be worth a looksie if ever I'm in the mood!

@Tjuz @Th3solution It's funny seeing Star Trek: Resurgence pop up again (and thanks for the tag as always) because I recently grabbed a physical copy of its upgraded PS5 version, and I'm planning a replay soon. Might even stick around and go for the platinum this time!

So I did a speedrun of Jesus Simulator tonight. It's exactly as it sounds, you basically do the kinds of things Jesus did in the bible and at the end you get crucified. I couldn't not try the game, it works in that it stays fairly accurate to the bible. I only played it to see how janky it might be, quite janky indeed. I only had one crash, it happened while I was overturning the tables of the money lenders. And with that it's back to Infinite Wealth.

Alien Isolation! 4 Missions left, it's great but I'll be glad when it's over!!!
The atmosphere is so "tense" that I need a hot shower to "unwind" my muscles after
a few hours with it every session.

Bring on the sequel already!!!!

You'd be correct though, since I loved both films and the show so far.

Thanks! I'm glad to finally have the plat. As for Spidey 2, I'm saving my NG+ playthru for right before I play Wolverine.

@sorteddan The Jesus game? I think it took about two hours but I went fast and never saw one hundred percent. I think I missed it by nothing talking to everyone at a dinner (the last supper?) or a wedding, I was a little tipsy when playing it too. It's probably an easy platinum when you don't cut corners for Christ or as Christ. I played a similar one on Steam a year or so ago, that Jesus was more like a super hero. They did try to keep the content sincere, it does tell a story. I wondered why it wasn't on PS5, then I saw the character models. Have you ever heard of Celebrity Deathmatch on PS2? They look like that, clay. When I woke up I checked to see if indeed I did play a Jesus game, then I saw my post and realized it wasn't a dream after all. Don't mix wine with the PSN Store. It felt like it should have been free by signing up to something Christ related, I'm still not sure who it's for. I'd say wait for a sale, it's over very fast and it's extremely linear.
