@Thrillho@FuriousMachine it really is very good. Just finishing off all the loyalty missions atm before finishing off the main campaign. Amazed that it’s never been adapted to film, as seems a perfect fit.
Also, what are your thoughts on Andromeda… worth playing, once the trilogy is all done?
@graymamba There has recently been some movement on the Amazon TV show; they just hired a showrunner. I'm not all that optimistic, though. While there is no info on whether they will directly adapt the games or if they will simply tell stories set in the universe, I think adapting Shepard's story would be a mistake. There are too many variations of that story out there in gamers' minds and managing a satisfying adaptation is a fool's errand. Personally, I think telling stories with new characters is the way to go, maybe having cameos from characters from the game (though Shepard should only be mentioned and in a gender neutral way). Additionally, making it animated would give them more freedom pr. budget dollar than doing live-action, so that would be preferable as well (expensive shows gets cancelled really quickly).
As for Andromeda, it is without a doubt the absolute weakest in the series and a bit of a disappointment in comparison, but with managed expectations I would still recommend it. I enjoyed it quite a bit and it does contain quite a few interesting characters and I wish they would have been able to move forward with the story (the overall setting has a lot of potential). So, if you still feel hungry for more Mass Effect when you're done with the trilogy, I would absolutely recommend giving it a go.
@JohnnyShoulder Absolutely! There is so much awesome lore in those games that, done right, a TV show is rife with possibilities! I fully expect them to fumble it, though, and deliver a Shepard story that appeals to only a handful of ME stalwarts who made similar choices in their playthrough (hopefully it will be well enough produced to garner new fans, though).
@graymamba I never played Andromeda as it always sounded a bit of a mess. I think is was @LtSarge who played it a while ago (probably like four or five years ago now but that’s still “recently” right?) and enjoyed it. But knowing that they’ve given up on that world now puts me off further.
Started Assassins Creed: Rogue this morning and really impressed with it considering it’s one of the more obscure AC titles. As far as the games nuts-and-bolts goes, it’s basically Black Flag but with a different protagonist and narrative. I’m already thinking that it’s a bit of a hidden gem.
@CaptD well if you liked Black Flag I definitely think that you should. I’m about 4 hours in and it’s been great! A really nice surprise as I wasn’t expecting a great big open-ocean to explore… I thought that Black Flag and Odyssey were the only ones that did that for some reason.
So I still have Syndicate, Valhalla, Mirage and Shadows left to play but Rogue is firmly in my top 5 AC games of the ones that I’ve played. Had an absolute ball with it today fair play!
@Th3solution it would probably be joint with (or just behind) Rogue as they’re just so similar. The funny thing is that I was actually a bit disappointed in Black Flag as the general consensus is that it’s incredible… and my expectations were off the chart. I did end up thoroughly enjoying it in fairness but I was expecting a bit more I guess. With Rogue though, I had no expectations at all so it’s been the opposite.
@graymamba ok, that’s what I figured. I do know we have had a few discussions about the AC games before and I distinctly remembered your love for Odyssey, but I couldn’t exactly recall how well you got along with BF. It is true that expectations have a lot to do with perception and so it makes sense that BF disappointed you but yet is top 5 in the series.
I didn’t get along with BF, as you might recall, and so I was curious if Rogue would end up any better. Going in without any expectations could make it click for me, but I definitely need to prioritize Odyssey first for when/if I return to the series.

@Th3solution yeah I think my initial disappointment with Black Flag also stemmed from when I played it in terms of the overall series. It was the third one that I played after really enjoying Odyssey and then Origins. So I was really riding high on the series at the time and had heard that the new (at the time) open-world action rpg Creeds weren’t a patch on the older format… and that Black Flag would blow them out of the water for me.
So at the time I was thinking… hmmm, for me it’s the worst one that I’ve played (even though I enjoyed it). But having since gone back to the beginning and working my way through them all (bar the ones that I mentioned in an earlier post) it really was one of the better games in the series.
Having said all that, as per your experience with it, it’s not for everyone and I wouldn’t recommend Rogue to you as it’s just so similar. Will be super interested to hear what you make of Odyssey when you eventually get around to it though.
@graymamba My experience came from the opposite direction — I played the older ones first, basically in release order (except that I played AC1 after AC 2) so when I got to BF I had finished the Desmond arc and so I think part of my disappointment was the change in storyline and main character. I didn’t click with the Templar background as much as the Assassins. Also the gameplay with the nautical elements grew tiresome for me. I remember just wanting to get to my next island to explore and being really annoyed at the rush of enemy ships that constantly harassed me.
Furthermore, the game came out cross generational (one of my first PS4 experiences) and at an inconvenient time for me personally, so I ended up dropping off the game fairly early. Not to mention it released right at the beginning of the AC avalanche and so it was quickly buried by Liberation, Freedom Cry, Rogue, Unity, and Syndicate, all of which released within two years of BF (!) … which is absolutely crazy to think about now when even sequels and remasters take 4-5 years between releases. But the over-saturation of the AC IP had a lot to do with the extinguishment of my interest. It wasn’t until Origins that I rekindled any curiosity for the series.
Since a lot this this was ‘time and place’ issues, Black Flag was on my list of games to revisit for a long time but at this point, (pardon the pun) that ship has sailed. Rogue might be a good experimental test to see if the timing and interest would be there for that whole style of game. But as mentioned, I think Odyssey will be better for me. It’ll still reintroduce me to the ship gameplay and see if it clicks better this time, and yet have the modern style of storytelling and combat. It just keeps getting pushed down the list by other games 😅

It seems like everyone has their favorite Assassin's Creed, because I tend to favor other games too. I always liked Syndicate, because it features in my opinion the perfected formula of the original game concept. And I think the music is the best of the series and London the most fun city to explore.
Revelations I think was just very good at handling the time machine aspect of those first games in the series. I think it did something very smart in connecting the stories of multiple games to each other in a satisfying way. Which is something they completely fumbled in the following games, upon which they decided to drop that whole angle.
Assassin's Creed 2 is still the game that turned the series from awful into promising.
And I think Black Flag and Unity are both good, because they are both very much games with a distinct character, direction and their own innocations, which I really liked. I never really understood why Unity was hated that much, and Black Flag praised that much, because to me I always kind of held them in similar regard.
Brotherhood and Origins were fine and also totally forgettable, while the other games were in my opinion just not good at all. But I believe many like those, so different strokes for different folks. (I disliked Valhalla so much that I never played any of the subsequent games in the series)
Syndicate
Revelations
Assassin's Creed 2
Black Flag
Unity
Brotherhood
Origins
Odyssey
Assassin's Creed 3
Assassin's Creed
@Herculean That’s interesting and you bring up a good point about Unity. It seems clear that Unity’s horrible launch left a stink on the game that has faded but never fully gone, even after all these years. I’ve seen many other people compliment the game too and I think I would really like the French Revolution setting. The bad press when it released was so pervasive that I avoided it and it led to my wandering away from the series at that point.
If I made my own list of the games I’ve played, it would be:
AC2
Brotherhood
Origins
AC3
Revelations
Black Flag
AC1
So if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the first game was the worst! 😂
