@TheBrandedSwordsman Yeah Corrupted Taro was the boss that gave me the most grief. I did bump down the difficulty for that one. I didn't find the last boss too bad. The platform sections were only minimal and I seem to remember checkpoints between the different stages of the boss.

Not sure if you are aware of the dedicated Kena thread in the PS5 section? I think a couple of peeps are currently playing it.

I wouldn't have normally played something like this so close to Elden Ring, but it kinda just happened.

So I guess the first major game that I'll be playing this year is Mass Effect: Andromeda. Played it for 1.5 hours and so far, I'm loving the game! The whole prospect of traveling to another galaxy hooked me instantly. It's not only interesting in terms of a Mass Effect setting, but also in terms of a video game setting as a whole. I haven't played a game where you're exploring another galaxy and that to me is another level of escapism right there. Not to mention that the feel of the story is so different compared to the first Mass Effect. The protagonist was already an established hero at that point and humans had already come into contact with aliens and come to know each other. Now the protagonist is a complete novice and we're experiencing their journey right from the beginning as well as exploring new planets and discovering new alien races for the first time. It's such a cool and different feeling and I like it.

The combat is also much improved compared to the trilogy. There's more versatility now in terms of movement: you can actually jump, hover and dash while in combat. This was something that was sorely needed, it just opens up for more possibilities in how you want to approach enemies. Being able to hotkey three abilities is also convenient (don't remember if that was a thing in the trilogy or not). The combat simply feels much better this time around.

Don't have a lot of thoughts in terms of characters or the plot yet as I'm still in the beginning, but so far I'm really enjoying this game.

@LtSarge Most things I’ve read seem to agree that the combat and concept are really good but the story just didn’t hold up. Plus, it had such a terrible launch (those gifs were fantastic) so it’ll be interesting to see what you make of it.

I’ve hovered over the purchase button a few times before and if my comments on my top 10 from this year are anything to go by, maybe I should just get it!

@Thrillho I've always had a feeling that I would like this game precisely because I avoided its rocky launch. A lot of people only talk about how bad it was at launch, but I rarely see anyone talk about how good/bad it is now.

I've seen a large resurgence of people speaking positively about Assassin's Creed Unity the past few years and that game was in an absolutely terrible state at launch. Don't see why Andromeda should be treated any differently if it's actually a good game.

After a mass install of the next games I want to play last week, as I inch closer to the Rise of the Tomb Raider platinum I found that i finally fancy making a start on the Yakuza series, so just installed Yakuza Kiwame too. Think it’s gonna jump the queue.

@Kidfried so this has been an ongoing discussion/deliberation… I do have Zero but due to a combination of it widely being regarded as the best game in the series, as well as being made after most of the series… I’ve decided that I’m gonna save it. For me personally, it’ll be good to have it to look forward to, rather than play it first and then every game after feeling ‘less’.

You’re not alone though, a fair few peeps have made the same suggestion as you… and although I won’t be taking your advice this time, I appreciate it 👍

@Kidfried lol… well I actually started the MGS series with V… which is even more sacrilegious I’d imagine 😅. Still absolutely loved every second that I had playing the rest of the series after it though.

Perfectly prepared for starting the series with … Kiwame to be a mistake… but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if it was in all fairness. I’ll let you know how I get on…

@Thrillho well I do ‘get’ playing chronologically but… I also get playing a prequel (with all the fan service that comes with that) after the games that were created first (well the games that Kiwame & Kiwame 2 were remakes of anyway). To me, I can’t shake the idea of what order I would advise a noob to watch the Star Wars films (it wouldn’t be chronological btw).

I have a feeling that in a few years once I’ve played through the series (though not Like a Dragon & the Judgement games… I’ll play them after) that I’ll take a lot more from Zero then, than I would if I were to play it first.

@nessisonett well it wouldn’t be the first blasphemy from my lips nor madness from my mind… won’t be the last either I’d imagine 🤣

I do apologise @Kidfried… I can tell that my goofy Yakuza order of play is like nails-on-a-chalkboard for you right now 😊. You (& @Thrillho & @nessisonett etc) are probably right… but I’ve always been more of a gameplay man than a game-story guy… and the fact that it’s pretty unanimous that Zero plays the best means that I just can’t play it first. It being last will be the motivation I need for me to finish the series… as if I played it first and everything played worse after, I know that I would struggle to plow on.

It’ll be fine, you guys played it chronologically… and it obviously worked for you, or you wouldn’t have the passion to explain your perception of my situation… but I’ll be good… and I’m sure I’ll really enjoy Kiwame and eventually Zero (in a few years time). As I said previously though, I do appreciate the input, I know it’s from a place of wanting me to get the most out of it 👍

@colonelkilgore 0 and Kiwami have literally the same engine and combat though 😂

@nessisonett so believe it or not, I’ve done a fair bit of research on the subject and the general view is that pretty much everything (missions, sub-missions, character progression etc) is just far more refined in Zero. So, I will make my way towards that refinement rather than play the perfected version first and play diminished versions thereafter.

While you three are in the majority in choosing to play chronologically… it might surprise you to find out that I’m not in a minority of one… there are others out there that believe that this is the better way to play it. Whether it is or whether it isn’t… it’s the way I’ll be making my way through them… and it’ll be fine. The reaction it gets (not just today but also when I’ve discussed it previously) does surprise and amuse in equal measure though.

@colonelkilgore I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it's all been a ruse. Everyone has been lying to you all this time. Yakuza 0 isn't the best game in the series, that honour actually goes to Yakuza Dead Souls. Because what's better than killing zombies in a Yakuza setting? Nothing! So I guess you have another game to look forward to now.
