I was wondering if dvd's can damage a ps4. Because i had an xbox 360 and with time the laser got damaged for playing dvds.

I don't think DVD's are compatible are they? I'm pretty sure only Blurays are compatible and if that's the case I wouldn't even attempt to play a DVD on your PS4. If it's incompatible it could damage your disc-drive.

I play both DVD's and Bluray's on my two PS4/Pro and I have had zero problem with it. All bluray players are compatible with DVD's ! It's built into the bluray standard so stop it with this urbanlegend BS that a PS4 will damage the discs. I have over 3000 DVD's and Blurays and I have never ever had a single problem with anything movie related so I have no clue how you come up with this.
The Xbox 360 damaged the disc because they built the drive too thin and the "arm" that the laser moves on scratched the discs, not the laser itself. I mean, how can a lightbeam damage anything ?! Think about it !

Uh...when did I decisively say one way or the other I essentially said that I "think" DVD's are incompatible, I didn't say for sure because I wasn't a 100% sure. Had you said yes they are I would have thought highly of you, but that unwarranted snark is a poor look.

@KisekiFan7 If a Blu-ray player plays Blu-rays it also plays DVDs.

@noctis-mei As mentioned by another user the 360 had other reasons for damaging discs. Plus the 360 did not have a blue ray drive, only a dvd drive. I've never heard of a console or media player damaging a specific type media before, or vice versa.

I doubt they will damage it, the console is designed to run them

@kyleforrester87 Stop spreading fake news! The PS4 won't destroy any DVD disc!
It will just convert them in slices of mortadella!!!

😂 Guys, I think the OP was asking if playing DVDs would damage your PS4, not does the PS4 damage the discs.

I think it was true back on PS2 that the internal belt that controlled the laser would wear out and break quickly if you played a lot of DVD’s on them. I’m not sure why but the word on the street was that playing the DVD’s was especially hard on the disc drive, as opposed to using the unit to play game discs. I don’t think PS3 had an issue with this “wearing out” the drive by playing movie BD’s, and so I assume the PS4 would be similarly resilient. Of course I think every disc drive has a finite number of times the components will read over those discs, so I’d rather use those limited number of hours using it to play game discs and then use my dedicated BD player for the movie discs.

@Th3solution something like this happened to me just last night 😭

I was watching millennium on dvd on my PS2 slim (for that 90s TV aspect ratio) for the disc to stop reading. I opened it and found a huge ring around the outside of the disc. Turns out that the ribbon cables attached to the laser on PS2 slims pop out and destroy dvds 😭.

Literally the first time I watched this DVD since I bought it when it came out. I was ready to chuck the PS2 into a wall but I guess I'll keep it in case I decide to try and fix it. I've ended up having to buy another copy of the full first season of Millenium second hand because I can't seem to find it anywhere online

See ya!

Th3solution

@ralphdibny Oh no! So it true that the DVD broke the PS2 and also that the PS2 ruined the DVD!? That’s unfortunate.

@Th3solution unfortunate but luckily tangenitally topical, I had no idea what thread I would post my sad news in until you posted that 😂

The PS2 broke the disc because it has a ribbon cable attached to the laser that pops out as the laser moves around.

Now I would probably consider the PS2 broken even if it reads discs as I wouldn't want to sacrifice any other discs to test it but I don't think the dvd broke it per say.

@Th3solution Yeah don't play arcade games either since the controller buttons will wear out, stick to visual novels only! In fact, just keep the shrink wrap on!

Depends on how many you put in.

@Th3solution I think the question has been answered already though.... The PS4 is designed to play both blu ray games and films, and also films on DVD. Yes, of course as with all tech there is a danger of a component wearing out eventually, but I think you are wrong to suggest only to use it for games.

I personally like to only play games so I don't wear out the disc drive unnecessarily, that being said my PS4 and Xbox one are my only blu ray players so I use them for blu rays and sometimes dvds. Some of my dvds have suffered from disc rot though so I probably wouldn't put them in my consoles.

And of course I broke my own rules over the weekend and last night and ended up with a scratched DVD and useless PS2. No problems with PS3, Xbox one or PS4 though 🤞

I recently used the PS3 to listen to the X files audiobook CDs as it seems to be the only thing I have that's capable of playing an MP3 CD

See ya!
