Sonic X Shadow Generations really is a game of two halves. The remaster of the fan favourite original game is here and intact, albeit perhaps showing its age in some ways. Meanwhile, the all-new Shadow Generations campaign is possibly the best that 3D Sonic has ever been. It builds on the solid foundation laid by Sonic Frontiers and refines the gameplay in bombastic levels that largely sidestep most of the issues the modern games have been suffering from for years. If you love Sonic Generations, great, but for our money, Shadow's side of this game is where the real value lies.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor PS5

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the direct sequel to Fallen Order, and it's a bigger and better game in every way. It builds upon the previous title's successes — engaging lightsaber combat, semi-linear environment design — while improving on areas that needed attention. The story takes some major steps forward, protagonist Cal's character is developed meaningfully, and his supporting cast is far more interesting overall. Throw on top a hub area that gradually changes over time, oodles of optional content, and one or two awesome set pieces, and you have a truly great game, whether you're into Star Wars or not.

Still Wakes the Deep PS5

Still Wakes the Deep may not stick around for long, but it’ll have an iron-clad grip on you across its runtime. There’s clear inspiration here from horror movie classics such as Alien and The Thing, and we adored seeing those inspirations play out through its highly-detailed settings and salt-of-the-Earth cast of characters. It may not be the most engaging gameplay experience on the PS5, but The Chinese Room smartly lays a solid foundation in the Beira D and its gaggle of staff, that’ll keep its viscerally focused horror on your mind long after the credits roll.

Tchia PS5

While it takes inspiration from a multitude of other titles, there are no other games quite like Tchia. Set in a fictional version of New Caledonia, you play as a girl who must rescue her father from a mysterious group. Before you reach that point, though, you've a whole archipelago you can freely explore, and it's stuffed with things to see and do. By possessing various objects and animals, you can truly see the map from all angles, then chill out by playing Tchia's ukulele at any time. Full of unique charm, this is an ambitious sandbox that's just fun to toy with.

The Last of Us Remastered PS4

Some of the finest of feathers in Naughty Dog's well-groomed plume, The Last of Us Remastered is not just an improved version of one of PlayStation's greatest ever games – it's arguably one of the most impressive releases of all time. An all-rounder that marries tense gameplay with compelling characterisation and sublime presentation, Joel and Ellie's cross-country escapade is as sombre as it is heart-warming.

The Medium PS5

The Medium evokes the survival horror experiences of old with fixed camera angles, but that's about as far as it gets paying homage to classic Resident Evil. What it does have going for it is a dual protagonist structure where you'll control two characters in two different worlds, able to seamlessly switch between them. It works relatively well, especially for puzzle solving. Another decent horror game from Bloober Team? You can count on it.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 PS5

Capturing the heart and soul of Warhammer 40k isn't easy, but Space Marine 2 is just about as good as it gets. This gory third-person action-shooter is a brilliantly robust adaptation, boasting a well-paced campaign (that can be played in co-op), a full set of online co-op missions, and even competitive multiplayer. In many ways it's a throwback to simpler times, when such shooters were so common, but it brings the brutality forward with some stunning visuals and a deeply satisfying, visceral combat system. A damn good time for everyone involved (except the Tyranids, obviously).

Wild Hearts PS5

Wild Hearts is, at times, an utterly thrilling game. It's a game that will leave you kicking yourself for a poorly timed dodge or a missed opportunity, and jumping out of your chair when you finally topple a troublesome foe with a last-ditch, go-for-broke attack. There's a handful of technical issues, a mite too much repetition, and some quibbles about the difficulty, but the core monster hunting experience is spectacular enough that the joys far outweigh the frustrations.
