Mortal Kombat 1 revamps the storyline of this enduring fighting game series, with all the characters you know and love reimagined in a new timeline. This makes for a brilliant (and violent) romp, turning unlikely pairs into firm allies in a high quality story mode. Once you're done with that, the game has plenty more to do: experiment with the new Kameo system; play the board game-like Invasion mode; and get a bit more lore on all the fighters in the arcade-like Tower mode. While the core fighting hasn't evolved all that much, this is still arguably the best Mortal Kombat yet, and will certainly be supported for a long time.

Its combat system remains incredibly enjoyable throughout, and new mechanics provide depth and strategy in droves. One Piece Odyssey plays a lot like Dragon Quest XI, and it's not that far off being just as good as it.

Pacific Drive PS5

A unique driving adventure, Pacific Drive is a supernatural roguelike where a busted up old car is the star of the show. Featuring a mysterious narrative woven through your excursions into a creepy exclusion zone, this is a survival game with a heavy focus on maintaining and upgrading your vehicle. The game can be a little overwhelming at points, but caring for your car really makes it feel special, and there's lots to discover as you explore the zone, getting into all kinds of scrapes.

Penny's Big Breakaway PS5

As far as 3D platformers go, Penny's Big Breakaway is pretty unique. Largely devoid of combat, this is all about momentum and movement through each colourful stage, but the mechanics and controls will take some getting used to. You use a magical yo-yo to zip around each level, and those that click with the unusual traversal can blitz through stages super fast. Very satisfying once you master it, this cute and unique game is a fun platformer doing something a little different.

Pentiment PS5

Pentiment is a unique narrative adventure with a stunning art style. Set in 16th century Bavaria, you play as a character who begins an investigation into a murder of which your friend has been accused. Through exploring the setting and chatting with locals, you'll slowly peel back the layers of the mystery as well as interact with the well-observed lives of everyday people. It's a slow-moving but thoughtful and well-executed game.

Persona 3 Reload PS5

As far as faithful remakes go, Persona 3 Reload is right up there with the best you'll find on PlayStation. The original Persona 3 is an undeniable classic, but Reload greatly improves the experience by modernising its turn-based combat and expanding its storytelling. What's more, it's an utterly gorgeous revival, boasting incredible art direction and some of the most stunning presentation you're ever likely to see in an RPG. A must for existing fans, and for newcomers, a perfect introduction to the Dark Hour.

Persona 5 Tactica PS5

Atlus has successfully translated the turn-based combat of its 2017 masterpiece into a competent tactical experience, though Persona 5 Tactica won't be heralded with the same praise. Consistently good during fights, customising your party and mastering its many stages is where the game is at its best. However, there's little to the title besides those skirmishes, and without any exploration or sense of character progression, this feels like the Phantom Thieves at the end of their tether. Joker and co have enjoyed a great run, but Persona 5 fatigue is well and truly beginning to set in.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy PS4

Phoenix Wright has finally made his debut on a PlayStation console in the form of the Ace Attorney Trilogy, and you'll have absolutely no objections from us. This collection of three brilliant games is well worth the attention of adventure game fans, visual novel aficionados, or budding lawyers. The mind-bending, labyrinthine murder plots are far-fetched but engaging, the writing is consistently pithy and amusing, and the characters you'll meet are charming and unique. It's an open and shut case – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy rocks.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance PS5

Sonic Frontiers PS5

With Sonic Frontiers, SEGA decided to play with the traditional formula of the hedgehog's 3D outings, and the result is one of his strongest adventures in a long time. While certainly not without its flaws, this open world spin on the speedy character is refreshing, giving him ample room to run and plenty of opportunities to engage in bite-size platforming challenges. Most importantly, Sonic feels nimble and fun to control — most of the time, anyway. There's definitely some rough edges here, but it's ultimately an enjoyable game that fans of the franchise will adore.
