Riccitiello Reckons Mirror’s Edge Totally Deserves A Sequel

If EA's Top Man Wants More Mirror's Edge, We Think It's Safe To Say We're Going To Get More.

If EA's Top Man Wants More Mirror's Edge, We Think It's Safe To Say We're Going To Get More.

EA’s big boss-man John Riccitiello has told Kotaku that he reckons Mirror’s Edge totally deserves a sequel.

“We’re still working through things like how to best deal with Mirror’s Edge 2,” he said. “There are some things we learned about that [first] game. It was, I think, a massively innovative product. To be honest with you, I think it’s a game that deserves to come back.

“Innovation doesn’t mean it all works the first time. If it did everyone would do it. I think Mirror’s Edge was a fascinatingly original world. Fascinatingly original art direction. Music and sound design was great. I think the gameplay mechanic was a blast, but was intermittent and the levels didn’t work.

“You found yourself scratching at walls at times, looking for what to do. Sometimes you had a roll going, downhill, slide, jump, slide, jump and then you just got stopped. It sort of got in the way of the fun.

“It was like we couldn’t quite decide if we were building Portal or a runner. And I don’t think the consumer was ready to switch it up quite that way. You could say it was a sharp and great innovation. I believe that it was. You have to figure out what to do from here if you want it to be a five million seller vs. a one-million unit seller.

“I’ve had several very lively debates with the dev team. And they are working on it. But there’s a couple of different directions you could go.”

Riccitiello’s totally hit the nail on the head as to why the original Mirror’s Edge was kind of flawed. Here’s hoping we see more from the Mirror’s Edge franchise soon. With the flaws fixed, of course. We’d totally be up for it.

Dude, What We Would Give For More Of This...

Remember how Mirror’s Edge was so close to being awesome? Yeah, a sequel could fix all the problems and help the franchise achieve its potential.

It looks like that sequel is indeed on the cards. An EA DICE lighting artist’s profile lists work on two projects, including Battlefield 3 and, ahem, Mirror’s Edge 2.

Free Mirror's Edge DLC For Europe? Mmmm-yes Please.

One thing we were thinking about buying when we got back though was the Mirror’s Edge DLC which released a few months ago. Well Europeans, if like us you’ve been dreaming of more Mirror’s Edge while on holiday, perhaps you’d like to know the content is now free.

Sadly the offer doesn’t extend to the US.

“Small Team” Working On Mirror’s Edge 2

More Mirror's Edge Eventually On The Way.

More Mirror's Edge Eventually On The Way.

Mirror’s Edge had one of the best graphical styles and concepts in years. Sadly, somewhere along the way the execution was a little awry. What should have been a huge release essentially got lost in the shuffle. Thankfully, there is a sequel on the way.

While somewhat disappointing for EA, VP of EA Europe Patrick Soderlund has confirmed a sequel is in the works.

“You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”

We’re excited. Tweaks to the level design, controls and pacing would make Mirror’s Edge a much better game and we’re sure these are things EA are looking into.

The Real Mirror’s Edge, Probably Better Than The Game

Amazing.

Amazing.

Some photographers are really good. They blur the lines between real life and not-so-real-life. Cue Jesse James Allen and his crew, who’ve literally brought Mirror’s Edge to life with this outstanding photoset.

Fan Service (Not Quite) Sunday: Real Life Mirror’s Edge

Soundtrack: check. First-person: check. Parkour skills: check.

We’ve seen a few videos akin to this, but by far is the embedded effort the best we’ve seen. In fact, for a moment it made us want to play Mirror’s Edge all over again. Until we remembered it was kind of broken.
